To be honest I suspect there's very little cash to be had doing this. The downloads will make sod all, if there's vinyl it will only sell in limited quantities.

Joy Division can never reform, there is no Ian! So him doing the tribute there, I can appreciate and understand, even though he has copped a lot of flack for that. But with doing New Order, well we know the singer is still alive and the rest of the band are too. This message board(and most of the NO fans/all the press) would go ballistic if he was to tour New Order albums without them. Am I wrong?

No.

They seem to go ballistic whatever he does so I reckon its all the same.

Well, nobody goes ballistic about tribute bands that play only New Order covers (like Re: Order), right?
So, imagine if Hook showed up at a Re: Order gig and played bass for the night? Everyone would be psyched, right?
So then extrapolate that further: Hook starts to tour with Re: Order or makes his own tribute band with non-original new order members.
Why would that be profane, yet Hooky playing one night would not be?

totally agree. write new music. what is up with all this nostalgia? i'd say the same thing to Sumner playing JD songs at Bad Lieutenant gigs.
i remember a time when they wouldn't play joy division or the older hits or do encores, except special occasions.
i guess every night is a special occasion now. ![]()
and then it was pretty cool when they did it as new order in the mid-2000s with 3 of the original members onstage together playing the stuff. but now there is no new order, and each of them is off covering the old songs on their own, it is just pathetic.
in 2012, we are going to see three new releases on different vanity record labels:
Peter Hook's Closer, Bernard Sumner's Closer, and The Other Two's Closer.
what a joke this is all turning out to be.
To be fair though, BL has only released one album. Not all of the songs might sound good live, and if they only did the songs that sounded good live from that album, they'd be left with quite a short setlist. (The songs aren't that long in length either.) Also, many musicians play older material even when touring new albums. It's just that in Bernard's case, said older material literally goes back into the bands he used to be in.
I like to look the whole situation, however. Yes, Bernard has played NO/JD/Electronic songs during BL gigs. But also, he did manage to make a new album with his bandmates, and release a few new pieces of music via collaborations. Steve has done remixes for NIN, toured with BL, and so on. While Hooky has released some Freebass stuff, a lot of what we're hearing about these days about what he's doing relates either to JD or the Hacienda. Of course, how much nostalgia is too much or whatever is a 'your mileage may vary' situation. That is, it depends on the person.
Some people might not want any nostalgia. I'm not saying that Hooky is bad and the other guys are good, but I can understand why some people think that Hooky is going overboard with nostalgia stuff.
Also, Bernard once said in an interview published here around the time NCAT was released (roughly translated back into English by me): 'Even though I've started a new band, I won't be free from my past. But I want people to give the new songs a chance. It turned out wonderful, I'm proud of it, and if I were just repeating the past, I'd rather quit being a musician. '

I think I must enjoy living in the past then because if Im at a gig and I hear the words "This is a new song we're about to play" I always groan inwardly, go to the bar and wait to hear a tune I know!

Yep, it's all relative, remember seeing them in Feb 85 hoping to hear most of PCL and Movement and all the stuff in between and kept getting all this new stuff off Low Life![]()

Your lucky. I'm usually holding the bar up only then to wake up the next day missing me favourite pair of Adidas samba's with little or no memory of the night

Yeah. Dont take me too seriously I was just trying to stick up for liking the past. Paradoxically, would people think "Oh for fucks sake, not True Faith again? Enough of this old shit!"
I guess the longer a band have been in existence the less likely the new material would be any good anyway, people who go to see the Rolling Stones now for example are hardly likely to want to hear new material, but Bernard and Co are not quite in that dinosaur category yet.

Hardly any Id imagine. Maybe ex-Beatles? However, plenty perform the songs live. Morrissey being the first name that comes to mind. Does anybody know whether Ian Brown does Stone Roses songs?
Yes he does. If I recall rightly he sang a few at Glastonbury a few years back.

It's all beginning to sound too much like Bucks Fizz for me! ![]()
Having now read all the contributions so far to this post, it does sound all a little too shite for the former members of New Order.
Hooky's Freebass split just as it was releasing its debut album, and BL's album material was that shit they were forced to play NO, JD and Electronic material at gigs. And kids, having finally heard the BL album in all its, ahem, 'glory, I can confirm it is indeed extremely fookin' shite.
This really is a headfook for the diehard fans. Maybe twenty years ago a NO side project was an exciting prospect, vis à vis Electronic's eponymous debut album, but not now. It just sounds like some old blokes, who should know better, scrapping around trying to find some justification for their waning talents.
NO's sum total was always greater than its individual parts, so come on lads - particularly you Mr. Hook - sort your fucking heads out and get the band back together, and finish off that fookin' album we were promised in 2006. If only for the fookin' money that you always used to complain you were fookin' due.
Some good points, noorder.
The Bad Loot record had it's moments but they were probably too few and far between with that particular style of generic "indie rawk". We are a fussy bunch after all. There are a handful of good tunes on it though, or at least I think so... looking forward to a second LP. Who knows, Barney could push the envelope with the band's sound, chuck in a few drum machines and the odd keyboard... or erm, not. His recent Hot Chip collaboration has raised my hopes somewhat.
Freebass on the other hand - let's be honest - was a total disaster. The endless "it's gonna be great" interviews, the touted-then-dismissed collaboration rumours, the lengthy five year gestation period, Rourke mysteriously leaving, the half-good EP, the mediocre LP and last but not least Mani very publicly melting down on Twitter. Disaster is a mild term once you read the last sentence back tbh.
Moving on, it would definitely be nice to see Hooky do some new stuff and move away from the JD nostalgia as well as the burning wreckage of Freebass. Both Revenge and Monaco had their moments and when he was good (I.e. Wdywfm? Tender, Junk, Big Bang, State of Shock etc) he was really fucking good. Even the Hybrid stuff was excellent, more of that please. If 2011 brought us something like that I would be chuffed. Bernard's one off collaboration with Hot Chip is the kind of thing I mean... if Hooky did a couple of quick tracks like that with up and coming dance producers it could be good.
As for NO reformation, if it's just for a tour with the greatest hits setlist and cranking out LWTUA for the gazillionth I'd rather they stayed apart. If they start touring the NO albums individually then I've really lost interest, couldn't think of anything much worse.

What about the reformation of JD (with new singer) that was on the cards a few years ago?

Having fully heard the BL album myself, I can fully confirm that it's fucking excellent. Especially the tracks Sink or Swim, Poisonous Intent, This Is Home, Running Out of Luck, Runaway, Twist of Fate, and Summer Days, all of which sound like great New Order songs that are simply missing some awesome lead bass lines from Hooky....and that is basically what BL is....New Order without Hooky. Yes, Jake sings on a few tracks and does some backing vocals, but it's still late period New Order to me (Sumner/Morris/Cunningham)on most of the songs. I've got my own personal tracklist of it with what I think are the best BL songs....and it's still a ten track record.
And actually, a lot of the BL songs sounded great live. BL usually played 7-8 BL songs at their gigs, that is half the setlist, with the rest of the set being for older material..which is this case, since BL is composed of 3 members of New Order, two members of Joy Division, and is lead by the musical director of both JD and NO, it makes sense for them to play NO and JD tracks. When most bands tour a new album, they play 7 0r 8 songs from the new record, and then seven to ten older songs from previous records. As BL is a continuation of NO, I don't see what the issue is.
I don't mind Hooky doing his Unknown Pleasures tour....it's his call, and he isn't forcing anyone to go. It's 9:30 Pm here in NYC right now, I'm just about to get off of work, and Hooky is about to start playing. I'm not there because I had to work and didn't have the extra cash for the ticket..but part of me hopes the show goes really well.
I do agree with you that the best thing would happen would be for New Order to simply reunite....with Gillian on keyboards as well as Hook, Sumner, Morris, and Phil. It will probably never happen, but that would be the best for all concerned...if they could just bury the hatchet.
you trying to piss off Sultan?
the youtube is rough, but it was actually pretty rawkin and fun in the club. just fun, not anything monumental or historic that needed a video made. it was Sultan's bday or something and Hooky was being a nice guy.
had to be there i suppose. :)
You guys slagging Hooky for touring Unknown Pleasures are overlooking another, much higher profile example of a bassist touring a classic album without any of his previous bandmates: Roger Waters is doing The Wall (and has done Dark Side of the Moon in the past), only instead of a small family affair / tribute band / jam with friends kind of vibe, he's doing the full arena show the way it was "meant to be", and rather than pissing and moaning people are lining up around the block for it. Hell, the parallels continue: Waters even has his son in the band.
Who cares about all this old shite, move on.
Stop living in the past and listen, watch, and play something relevant to this generation. There's so much great music about now and none of it made by Hooky.
