LWTUA- Number 1

I cant see a thread on this, but I cant be the only who tuned into XFM yesterday late PM and they were playing a countdown of the top something Manc tunes.

As I was driving from Kent my reception was shoddy, but I heard Blue Monday and then Stone Roses was number 2 with I Am The Ressirection and Mani spoke about how they jammed together in one take to come up with the superb ending of the track.

And number one was......LWTUA. Hooky joined (whoever it was) the DJ to say he was surprised a 33 year old song would make number one and how great it was to beat the Gallagher twins.

He also said LWTUA was written in 3 hours, based on his bass riff and gave Curtis big credit for the open, vunerble lyrics that everyone can relate too.

I must admit it is one of the best songs of all time.

Its getting interesting now to hear how many songs our Peter claims to have written, when for years it was a Group thing .

this does not detract from what is one of the all time single classic songs.

just how or why ill never understand.

I didnt hear the radio program but thats not how No Regret describes it. Its not that surprising that Hooky came up with the bass line, I'll stick my neck out and suggest Steve worked out the drums too. If we read an article where Bernard explains how he put the guitar chords together it dont mean he reckons he wrote it.

Time has passed and I enjoy the anecdotal offerings regarding the creation of some of the best music of all time.

To be fair to Hooky he was quite surprised and humbled that a song he helped write 33 years ago should stand the test of time nd still be so relevant. He always comes across in interviews as a decent bloke and I'd rather hear from a member of joy division than not (even if it's their take on events).

He didn't mention Barney or Steve but was full of praise for Ian for his lyrics and vocals. And it was interesting to hear him say they wrote it in 3 hours. I guess it just all come together quite easily and maybe that's why its such a classic. Hooky also said it was the perfect pop song that everyone could relate too.

The song sounds very much like one that would have started with the bass riff and the rest would follow, like quite a few early JD/NO tracks.

Funny how when bands split up, you start to get the 'I wrote this' routine when a band generally credits all members for a track, regardless who actually did. This is always a danger and it is usually advised that bands clearly state who wrote the track to avoid legal problems later on...

It was pretty even in J.D, with Ian having the great ear spotting a riff (obviously not forgetting his epic lyrics) from Hooky or Steve, then Barney would arrange the songs to give to Hannett to sprinkle his magic dust over them.

Barney was clearly the main songwriter in New Order, and as a whole, the band seemed less democratic. But if you need someone to take the bull by the horns, then so be it.
