The auto-tune is a shame, but Subculture is such a great record, and this is a nice mix on its own. Would be interesting to see Neil Tennant singing it, though.

Neil Tennant's thin reedy voice just irritates the fucking shit out of me. His presence all but ruined the first few Electronic releases.....
I quite liked this version, but yeah, the autotune was unnecessary. It makes me wonder if the person who produced it even listened to Bernard's vocal in the original. More rawness on the track in general would have been nice.

lol... I think Chris Lowe started his career listening to this track almost. Amused that people expect him to suddenly learn to sing...
Bear in mind the PSB's probably sold more records than NO, i suspect he feels he has a right to cover it.
Not saying I like it, but it's alright, and let's face it the original has always been a bit flawed. Legendary live though...

PSB were around well before Subculture came out.

Just to be contraversal, Id say the opposite is true. Barneys voice sounds strained and weedy compared with Tennant on GAWI and POAS.

I love Neil Tennant's voice. he is like the Synth pop Neil Young. His lyrics are great as well.
Sounds nice but too mellow for me. I do think to many people automatically mistake layered vocal as "autotune." Layering vocals often creates that chorused, flanged sound depending on the vocalist, how it was sung, or if it's simply just a slightly detuned copy of the original (other methods can lend similar results as well). Just sayin'...
I quite like it actually. Don't mind the vocal so much as the robotic sort of monotone style suits the backing track well. Yeah, as cover versions go that's not too bad. Unsurprisingly, the keyboard sweep near the start reminded me of West End Girls instantly.
The production is very polished though, not necessarily a bad thing in my mind if the rest of the elements of the track fit the style.
It'll divide NO fans of course. As Mr Eck demonstrates if you're not a PSB fan you'll f*cking hate it. But I've heard far far worse and more misguided NO covers than this.
I was pleasantly surprised on first listen today. The vocals sound good to me, and I cant hear any auto-tune of any kind either. Great production and a nice laid back feel.
Subculture really is a superb song and its a shame NO didnt really do it justice (recording wise). IMO.
I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I like this. The music brings me back to '88-'89.
