Think TOTAL is largely intended for the download era. Download a track or two, and maybe you will link to something else to buy. Come looking for Joy Division and maybe you look at some New Order or vice versa.
And maybe grocery stores. Will this be easy to find at Tesco?
As expected. You can't release a load of tracks people already own several times over and expect it to sell well. The only way they'll hit the top 10 again is with a new album....

I guess it's unsurprising that it's tanked chart-wise. My estimate of top 20 was well off it seems; I based that on 'Singles' managing to enter at #15 back in 2005 but clearly times have changed. Total has stalled at #51 because the market is saturated with JDNO compilations and frankly, nobody wants/needs any more of them. If you read the NME article announcing Total's release date there were so many people in the comments taking the piss regarding NO's album to compilation ratio.
New Order released 8 studio albums and now have 7 compilations to their name. Considerably more if you decide to count the various other promotional CDs such as 20 Years Of New Order and Joy Division / New Order Collection which both contain JD and NO tracks. The amount of Joy Division compilations outstripped their only 2 studio albums some time ago and then some. The well is dry, the horse has disintegrated from all the flogging etc. etc. please just stop.
It's just ironic that the least useful compilation (Total) has the best mastering quality out of all of them. I like 'Hellbent' as a tune but by itself never justified a whole new compilation.

Considering the band split up 6 years ago and aren't likely to tour anytime soon, there isn't any kind of release they could do that WOULD chart any better.
No matter how good the WFTSC tracks are or aren't, they don't make a hi-scoring album release, neither do rarities. So, exactly what else are you expecting? Be realistic.

I am not able to understand, why people complain about another compilation. Nobody has to buy it. By the way the release is only to get attention in the media to generate sales of the compilation or the earlier stuff. The good mastering quality is an advantage to buy the compilation instead of the earlier stuff, if you don't have any JD/NO records.

Ordinarily I'd agree with "nobody has to buy it" but unfortunately they decided to put the band's first new material since WFTSC on the compilation meaning that any fan worth their salt would be forced into buying it. If it was simply another 'International' where we already had everything then I probably wouldn't have bought it straight away. I think that's where the source of some fan's irritation has come from over 'Total'; basically a full CD price for one new song which is unavailable anywhere else.
Other than that, I agree with you Norb that it's probably not a bad introduction for new fans and at least they got the mastering right this time. As soon as I heard the disc I gave them their dues for that; Steve and Frank Arkwright pulled it off.

But you can buy Hellbent for 99p on itunes, you DONT have to buy the album just for one track. So theres not an issue there.

Yes, you can buy 'Hellbent' individually on iTunes; a compressed version of the track I.e. not Red Book CD standard. Personally, I don't like iTunes and I've not bought anything from their "store" in years. Aside from the lossy format in which they sell, they also hard wire your name and email into files which is massively off-putting. Another example of Apple's paranoid approach to controlling everything in their grasp even once you've paid for the bloody thing and it's left their domain.
Amazon UK's MP3 store who do not store your details in the file is actually 10p cheaper at 89p per track. Normally Juno UK offer lossless WAV/FLAC versions of new releases but they only offer 'Total' on CD at the moment.
So the point remains that if you as a fan or collector and want to own 'Hellbent' on a physical medium or in lossless quality you have no other option but to buy the CD. If you're happy with a digital copy with more than half the sound quality missing then that's your preference.

Buy it from Spotify. Spotify is fantastic.
The missus bought me an iPod shuffle a few years back but I've never bought anything from iTunes. I find their system overcomplicated for what it is. Spotify is the dog's bollocks in comparison, and really easy to use.

I'm keeping an eye on a few Ebay auctions myself but most of them are at around £15 at the moment which is a bit much. I'll wait until they drop to under a fiver.

I mostly agree with you. Anyway, the charts are rather irrelevant to me. It's just numbers.
'Total' has slipped to this week's No.100 in the UK Albums chart, so I guess it'll be gone next week! 2 weeks in the chart isn't great, but I think it's what most of us expected...
