TOTAL's Biggest Song Omission

TOTAL is meant be a collection of songs that best represent the history of Joy Division through to New Order. While I wouldn't expect some of my personal favourite tracks to be chosen, there are a few I was surprised to see not represented at all. What are your thoughts? In my opinion the biggest omission would have to be Dead Souls.

TOTAL's biggest O is:

Round & Round. Fine Time is more of a novelty track, hardly a real song, so why they preferred it to Round & Round is beyond me.

And Isolation to be replaced by Shadowplay or at least Dead Souls. But why in the world they selected Isolation??

Ceremony... After all the cries from fans about preferring the trio version the label seemed to start to listen. It's the second time this version is up since Singles. I prefer the Substance version: the sound is more clean, better quality.

And maybe instead of Krafty to use Waiting For The Siren's Call.

If they're going for a 'greatest hits' style thing and focusing on singles, as they seem to be doing for the NO part, I can't see much you could do to the tracklisting... If you want my 13 best NO tracks, that's something different entirely... JD-wise, agree that Isolation is out of place... Since it breaks the 'singles' run of the rest of the album, Dead Souls would make sense as a replacement, but I reckon having Digital as the first track would kick things off nicely... Kind of where it all properly started, in a way...

I think Run 2 is the greatest omission on Total, but I understand why it's left out, considering other tracks that were left out.

It was a number one single and the compilation is aimed at Tescos/Asda/etc... :p

Yes, starting with Digital would have been perfect. i also would have dumped WIM and replaced it with TBTHOG. Also Run instead of Fine Time. And EGG! where the fuck is EGG!?

If it's a representation of a 'greatest hits',or sort of,it has to be Confusion instead of TLU,it was a much bigger hit,top ten UK,even tho' I do prefer TLU,but not the 7" version

Couldn't agree more, Ive always loved Round &Round. I'm loving Hellbent but that's probably the desire for new stuff rather than how great it is.

Shouldn't we instead be focusing our polling efforts on getting the band to release a physical single (7", 12", CD, whatever) for "Hellbent"???

And no, I don't really qualify the one-track CDR promo as a physical release, considering that the thing likely won't play anymore in 5 to 10 years.

Unfortunately, very few people actually release physical singles nowadays - and if they do, it's normally a 12" single...

CD singles are very scarce - one of the only few that I've seen recently is the recent remix of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence"...

If you don't believe me, next time you walk into a record shop (if you can find one), try and find the CD single section - more than likely it won't exist anymore..

I think the New Order tracks are fine. At least one song from each era is represented. The JD tracks are a bit weird though. I would have swapped out Isolation with Warsaw or Digital, then put them in chrono order:

The problem is that they would have put Run, mislabelled Run2

i think its about 77 minutes long which is at the very limit of what can fit onto a cd, to add anything else on you would need to take something off - I think its a very good compilation that flows very well and the sound quality is superb as well a far cry from the nightmare of Singles, and an improvement over the reissues, which weren't that bad in the case of the albums themselves. At a push I would say Confusion should have been added.

They could have made a nice bonus discs for the fans:

Everything's Gone Green is the glaring omission. Isolation doesn't belong there.

A single disc set doesn't do the 2 bands output justice. It should have been a double disc. It just looks very thin at the latter end, one single per album is too little. Of course, they chose the wrong singles off Technique, but heigh ho.

The capacity limits of a quick'n'cheap single CD release require there to be many omissions.

But the worst thing about this latest re-hash for cash is that Technique is represented by Fine Time alone when there are so many tracks, including 2 other singles, on that album which are sooooo much better.

"Dead Souls" in one of their more famous songs in a wider sense. Shame that didn't make it. Think "Digital" would fill the place as a single better than "Isolation" also.

"Everything's Gone Green" is essential to me, thou I suppose it didn't fit. "Run" is a great song, would think the casual listener would skip over "Fine Time".

Maybe next they can have a Total Extended 2 disc set special limited edition with a special new remix of all the versions of "Blue Monday" mixed together. Maybe one disc for JD, one disc for NO. Or a remix "Total", they have not had a remix collection since the rather awkward The Rest Of... Saville can make the sleeve black with the same Total design.

They will keep making new collections every few years as long as anybody notices anymore.

With the exception of Isolation which was never a single, all the selections appear to be the highest charting single (globally) of that particular year or era. Fine Time did better overall than any other single off Technique, though if they wanted to stick purely to singles, maybe Dead Souls or Komakino would have made more sense than Isolation.

Yay... voted for Confusion to find that it's the most popular vote so far. Ok it could be Barney's worst singing ever but it's a significant part of New Order's history IMO.

And of course I mean the Arthur Baker version, not the 1987 version, which good as it is, is missing the funkiness of the original.

On the subject of 'Confusion', I remixed it earlier in the year if anyone would like a listen over on www.whitepress.eu if they're bored.

Went to Hooky's show two weeks ago in Dublin and I'll have to raise a pair of upwardly pointing fingers to his critics who say he is cashing in or whatever - that was without a doubt the best gig I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot.
