Fake Joy Division Flyer goes for a grand on ebay!

Not sure if anyone else has seen this but I was watching a Joy Division flyer on ebay last week that was a blatant fake.

It is supposed to be from the Preston Warehouse gig in 1980, but it was created using an 3D image that was designed by an artist and posted on Flickr in 2009!

It also used the standard Arial fontset – which wasn’t designed until at least 1982! You only have to look at it to know that there is no way on God’s earth that it is an original design from 1980.

I messaged the seller to let him know it was a fake and was met with a torrent of abuse and horrible personal (and sexual!) insults.

This morning it ended at £1,021. Someone has been badly ripped off.

Why didn't you tell eBay it was fraudulent?

I did report it to ebay, a good 5 days or so before it ended but they obviously weren’t interested in closing it down. I suppose they don’t want to get involved in proving/disproving authenticity of things like this. And they will make £100 in fees out of it so that’s probably all they care about.

I can confirm that the winning bid was also bogus .....it was a member of Joy Division Central ....... the seller was very abusive and basically got what he deserved for the flyer .....nothing !

Have written a few messages now saying that the flyer is not a fake, loads of people , myself included in Preston have this flyer.

What the guy is asking is does he have the second flyer. Which is even rarer than the one he is selling. Nearly everyone I know in Preston has or did have that flyer 34 or whatever years ago.

The second flyer is just a negative copy of the original flyer, the one being sold. But believe the designer might have only made the one flyer for himself. He would have have loved the fact that he was so advanced in design that he has fooled you all.

But there is one certain easy way to find out if the flyer is genuine or not. On the back of the flyer are four lines from a Joy Division song.

I won't reveal what they are until it has been proved if the flyer just sold is genuine or not.

Just tell the buyer to check the back if there are four lines of Joy Division lyrics on it, then it is genuine.

From the photograph on ebay it looks completely genuine to me, as it is exactly the same as mine and about a 100 of my friends here in Preston.

Arial Black I believe the font is.

Which didn't appear on most peoples computers until the late 80s/early 90s.

The bottom left of the corner of the flyer - the text is not aligned properly.

The text is pixelated - pixels weren't really used at the time of Joy Division to create flyers, it was print and traditional graphics. Microsoft Paint is king of pixelating text in images.

The "picture" on the auction is too high a quality to be a scan. It is probably just the computer file uploaded a few minutes after it was put together in Paint or something.

ok Beth... having read Al's link, and the comment from the creator of said image that it was created in 2009, and was probably beyond the technology of 1980, you still stand by this?

I reckon it's now time for you to put up a scanned image of your flyer from 1980 (keeping the lyrics on the back secret) and show us all what it really looks like.

PS. I don't know why I am always sceptical of 'first time posters' in here, who mysteriously only post something when there is money involved, which amusingly the seller will never receive. You don't perchance happen to know the seller at all?

excellent news... had an ebay reply from clashcityrocker1976 (from Avon)giving me loads of abuse. First rate i must say. Now i hope said person does come round my way (as they stipulated)because as you know i dont mind the odd scrap Quite tempted to give out my addy even. A fake JD poster has just sold for £300 as well. Not the same seller.

Funny thing that - I told eBay about clear fraud too last month on something else and they ignored it. They just care about the sale fees, apparently.

That's complete bull, charity auctions are clearly marked on ebay, there are a few concerning JD right now like this one I picked completely randomly. Notice the ribbon and the notice just below the description. Also the guy's probably just thick English, us outsiders tend to take care of our language and try to blend in. So look out for someone like that there.

although avon & somerset police still exist, avon hasn't existed for some time - think it stopped in the 80's sometime before arial existed

regardless of that, given the concert was some time ago, it is feasible that she moved from the preston area to the weston area
