Was amused by this cod-Rock Family Trees campaign by Warners to (ahem) track the legacy of certain bands on their roster, incl. NO and JD.
Seems the only link between Nick Cave and Joy Division is that he doesn't much like them. Amazing!

seriously, Nick Cave is some sort of situationiste prank, right, just to see how many tasteless hipsters can be conned into listening to the worst vocalist in the history of mankind -

Well I like Nick Cave. I'm not an expert but I've got several of his albums and have seen him live a couple of times. I'd probably prefer to listen to Nick Cave than say, a lot of Shoegaze for example (MBV excepted). His vocal style takes a bit of getting used to, and yes he is a bit up his own arse (the infamous Zane Lowe interview springs to mind - but then Zane Lowe is up his own arse too). So this isn't a robust defence of the man but somewhere along the way he has written some good tunes and done it his own way. These three spring to mind, but there are many more:

Besides, he's always looked really crap as well (probably the only artist to still have his hair like a mullet even now).
I mean - look at him in the first of the video stills posted above....I rest my case!

I love Nick Cave. He is a genius. Brilliant songwriter, lyricist, singer, and performer. Right up there with Iggy and Bowie in my mind.

Agreed. I've seen all three of those guys live (Iggy and Nick once on the same bill!) and Nick Cave in full flight is a thing to behold.
Much as I like Suede, are they in the same sphere of influence as Joy Div, Smiths and JAMC? Happy Mondays arguably too. I guess you can make a case that Blur and Radiohead came after Suede's early glories but I'd love to see Mr Albarn's reaction to being but a stop on Suede's line :)
Ah Suede - now there's a band that was totally overrated. In 1989 The Stone Roses debut came out and it seemed like the prelude to a more exciting decade than the 80's. Then in '91 Screamadelica came out which seemed to confirm that the 90's really were interesting. Two years later, Suede (and all the fawning style/music mags) announced that they were the next big thing. God it was depressing. Bret Anderson whacking a mike off his arse and trying to look androgynous, as if to say: "Look at me! I'm really something!". I guess I could have forgiven that if the music was any good. I imagine if you crossed the Smiths with T-Rex and sucked out the wit and the talent you might get something like Suede. Ugh, turgid.
Maybe the title of the thread should have been EFFLUENTIAL Brits.....cos we've just been focusing on the cream of the crap.
Well, I like Nick Cave and Suede.
But maybe it's because I (as none-english speaker) don't listen too closely to the lyrics.
Whatabout Menswear. Didnt they create Britpop or something? They were really talented but then bands like Oasis and Blur jumped on the bandwagon and the wheels came off.

I remember first hearing that piece of dreck "Daydreamer" and thought: 'forget Elastica, why isn't Colin Newman sueing the arses off THESE imposters?'

He was also the producer and engineer behind swamp rockers Counting Crows (or, as melody maker once called them, Cunting Crows)....plus he was the mystery guy who styled the singer out of Nickelback's horrendous Jesus Mullet.......... such a man of many talents!!

My one recollection of Menswear is that at a music festival I attended in 1995 the lead singer was walking through the crowd and someone threw beer over him,if he hadn't been wearing a suit he would merely have been ignored.Needless to say he ran away.
