Run and Run2

Okay. Its got me beat. Whats the difference? Ive got both versions but I cant tell.

"Run 2" was remixed by Scott Litt from the version on Technique, hence the appendage of "2" to the title. The main difference is that the song has been made more radio-friendly by editing down most of the long instrumental run-out and appending it with a final repeat of the chorus. Litt's mix strips back much of the echo and layers of synthesizers, and in place centres the mix on Sumner's vocal and the bass guitar of Peter Hook.

"Run 2" became highly sought after by fans and was tantalisingly listed on the track lists the (the best of) New Order (1994) and Singles (2005).[3] While both claim to include the "2" version in fact the mix included is the original album mix; the "Best of" album credits Denver in the liner notes. The shorter "2" version was easily available on video as it was used in the single's music video. Finally in 2008, the extended mix of "Run 2" along with the minus mix of "MTO" were formally released as additional tracks on the deluxe edition of Technique. As of 2011 the short mixes of the songs remain unavailable.

Thanks Father Jack. So all i kept getting was Run but it was titled Run2. Typical of NO mismanagment.

So i guess recycle is the best place at the moment. I've always wanted this mix on cd. not a fan of the extended mix with dated 'breakbeat'. Pretty terrible.

No worries. I used to have Run2 on 7" vinyl radio-only promo and to be honest, I couldn't tell much difference from the original. I found the difference between the single and albums versions of Round and Round more noticeable.

Run 2 is the mix used in the video.

Outside of the original 12", the promo 7", or the video collection, Recycle is the only place to get Run 2.

What has that got to do with Run2 or indeed anything New Order related?

As for sourcing the elusive 7" mix the easiest place to acquire it is indeed the 'A Collection' DVD. Simply rip the soundtrack of the chapter in question; it's actually not a bad mastering - slightly over-compressed but not totally. Otherwise check out the invaluable Recycle blog as £50 Note mentioned.

As Run goes I prefer the album version overall every time; the Run2 12" remix sounds very much "of it's time" at best and the 7" has that rough snare drum all the way through which is headache-inducing. I wouldn't have said it was one of those 'essential' New Order singles of the ages really.

Best version = Technique original, which also ended up on The Best Of....

The single version, although remarkable only for its limited edition run (ha ha geddit?), has - as amurr586 above astutely pointed out - a headache-inducing snare sound which is too compressed in a lousy production by Scott Clitt.

The extended version on the same release also has some really, seriously, out-of-place extra hip hop beats which simply do not go with the rest of the song.

The Run 2 12" is something of a curio, certainly something of a collector's item, as (a) it was strictly limited and (b) it contains the exclusive (but throwaway) B-side MTO. I have it in an attic somewhere - love the track 'cos you get more Hooky in the instrumental break, but the remix is a puddle of poo. Do the song again then add some tinny synthpop beats, no thanks. John Peel spun it too I recall, and there was a T-shirt as well. One for devotees only...

There are a couple of different 7 inch mixes. I prefer the 7 inch remix (from 14 july '89), because Peter's bass sound the best on that one. You can find it on the Recycle blogspot.

There's also that tremendous instrumental version which I always like. That one stays close to the album version and/or the unedited old arrangement (from 26 June '89).

After all, I too vote for the album version as the best version of the song.

The mixing tapes surfaced a year or so ago. There are five or six American mixes of the song, one of them is an instrumental mix. Someone mentioned it here last year. But we all know what happened to the Run 2 release.

Both have their merits.

Shame it never really worked live though, a point Bernard made in one of the interview parts on the Glasgow DVD.

Yep, I remember his "punk" (in Bernard's words) version of Run in a 1989 concert.
