The hi hat on Ceremony is actually quite kinetic and really gives the song energy!

Steve's drumming for Transmission, hi hat included, is incredible.

I know this thread was started as a joke, but Steve's hi hat style is incredibly kinetic and adds so much energy and movement to the songs.

For instance, listen to the studio version of BL's Sink or Swim, which Steve didn't drum on, and then listen to a live recording of the same song, which Steve did drum on, and here what a difference his hi hat work can make.

3 way tie imho: Ceremony, Procession & Age of Consent... Good question for Mr. Morris... hopefully he'll chime in!

Sir, I must say that you have excellent tastes here.

Right back at you Mr. Starkey. Procession is somewhat subtle but propulsive also. Keep on taking a bite out of that Big Apple, Sir.

You are with me in spirit in NYC always, sir. I agree with you on Procession, just had a listen to it because of your post and the ho hat work is nice!

and less so with his Macclesfield accent:evil4:

only joking before anyone gets on high horse. what started out as a piss take thread has got some merits, judging by decent responses.

Ceremony stands out for me as the track with the best high hat. Transmission not too far behind.

As an album, I would say Technique with its crisp, clean production. Steves percussion is very evident and theres great rhythms.

The '88 remix of Fine Time.

Age of Consent, even though the bass is so strong the one thing that always stood out for me in the song were the Hi-hats.

What you're actually hearing is Barney banging on an empty wine bottle.

Changing my hi-hat vote to Vanishing Point. It's a bit fancier.

wasn't Fine Time programmed, or am i just being a yank and missing the joke?

it will have been, but very cleverly programmed, not just a run of 8ths with an open hat every 2nd beat, steve is an exceptionally good programmer too.

yes. i've always thought his programming was undervalued in the scheme of things.

wasn't trying to take anything away from his genius for programming those hats - he knew early on to keep the patterns varied and unpredictable -

but i have to admit i like his live hihat work on early new order material even more -

Anything on Technique for me. Specifically Vanishing Point.

...and band stabs. As well as great hi-hats Vanishing Point and Technique also have some cracking band stabs. Band stabs are, in my opinion, much underrated and seem to have regrettably drifted out of fashion.
