I know most people don't care and they are going to make fun of me but I was very upset that they didn't edit out the profanity that Bernard uses in the troxy album, especially after the perfect kiss, when he uses the C#$T word, that really upset me, I know they use profanity in interviews and I can let go of an occasional F word but the C#$T word really upset me, I wished that I hadn't bought 2 copies of the album, again I know most people don't care and think that there is NOTHING wrong in saying PROFANE and FILTHY things but I am not like that, I am sorry if I am being rude but I have to be honest.

no one should make fun of a principled opinion for a start.
i think the swear words are what make the performance human because people do say these things in life and its a lot better than miming and economical driven censorship. i know of several musicians who have political or social opinions that they would like to air but are afraid too because of being in the pocket or dropped by their label.
i dont agree with parental warnings about bad language but its a fair compromise ultimately. was there any warning on the cd?
Send both copies back and ask for a refund if you are that upset.
Or send them back, ask them to resticker the sleeves with "Parental Warning: The Singer Says 'Cunt' At Some Point" and get them to return them to you.

Reminds me of this sticker:

Personally I get more offended by people getting offended by profanity than the profanity itself. Could someone please put a sticker on this thread?
THESE DAYS WHAT IS WRONG IS RIGHT AND WHAT IS RIGHT IS WRONG. Sad but that's the world that we live in, just look at the responses from people on this forum.

Come on, Bernard never washed his mouth lads! ![]()
Linus : You could maybe sell the second copy of the CD on ebay. I don't see the point in buying multiple copies anyway..

Aren't you being a bit precious? I'm all for respecting opinions but when you're an adult and posting on a music forum populated by adults (many of them grizzled Northerners) it just seems naive to complain about swear words and naive to think you won't get some light-hearted stick for it. If someone who gets emotional or overly-sensitive about swear words used (usually in jest) by someone else, and that is deemed ridiculous by the majority, I don't see it as the fault of the majority but something the guy with the problem needs to work on.

If you don't like swearing you should stop listening to New Order live recordings or going to gigs.
It's not even the first time the word "cunt" is featured in an official New Order release. Have you seen "Pumped Full of Drugs" concert video before? Bernard says "Turn this light off, you cunt" around 3:33 in "Blue Monday".
linus sulanki wrote: I know most people don't care and they are going to make fun of me but I was very upset that they didn't edit out the profanity that Bernard uses in the troxy album, especially after the perfect kiss, when he uses the C#$T word, that really upset me, I know they use profanity in interviews and I can let go of an occasional F word but the C#$T word really upset me, I wished that I hadn't bought 2 copies of the album, again I know most people don't care and think that there is NOTHING wrong in saying PROFANE and FILTHY things but I am not like that, I am sorry if I am being rude but I have to be honest.
Would "pussy" have been a better choice?
I didn't expect Linus to react like this.
Relax and enjoy the music!
Is Linus truly offended, or is he just shocked at Bernard swearing? He's been on these forums for a while, and it's obvious that there are people here that use words like cunt and whatever else. Besides every female has a cunt, and sometimes people are called a cunt, or get accused of acting like one. That's life.
If the Troxy show was a New York gig and Linus was in the audience when Barney uttered the Cunty word after Perfect Kiss what would he have done? Cried? Vomited? Demanded money back? Left? Screamed "DISGUSTED!" at the stage?
This is the funniest thread I've read on NOOL in years ![]()
I can't say I like Barney's choice of words much either, but as others have pointed out, it's nothing new.
funny...i've always thought (like Jarvo did) that Linus was Bernard ..... umm, maybe sales for Troxy CDs a bit slow?? :)
I don't see why adults should complain about the profanity, it is a bit precious. But then I don't think Bernard's comment was necessary either.
I was glad my children weren't in the room when I listened to the album for the first time, I am fairly certain I don't want either of them picking up that word at a young age.

Wow, that was one of my fave moments on the entire album. I thought the intersong repartee was pretty entertaining this time around.
Does the OP appreciate the area the band hail from, the punk era in general and the sort of self-deprecating humour over their history? This may help ready his constitution for this kind of stuff in future. There are some reasonable films that document all this, such as Control, 24 Hour Party People, Grant Gee's Joy Division, etc.

In a bit of fairness to Linus, in the US, the c-word is far more offensive than it seems to be in the UK, at least that's my impression.

Fuck off.
If you want to live in a sanitised, child-friendly, no-swearing world, go live in a padded cell and watch Pixar movies forever. If Bernard wants to use the word CUNT, he can. If he wants to sing "It's the last FUCKING time", he can. if he wants to call a song "I've Got A Cock The Size Of The M1", fine. I'd far rather live in his world, than one where all the rude words are bleeped out and our genitals replaced with shiny blue stars.

May be I'm hardened to foul language, I'm originally from Lytham St.Anne's which while being widely regarded as posh, was once nominated the most foul mouthed place in England, most likely due to the fact that when you say you're from Lytham St. Anne's people go "OOOHH Lytham St. Arrrne's" which causes the retort "Fuck off you cunt!"

OK.. its a big swear word over here. Allegedly from middle English it was first used in written language in 1230, when a street in London was named Gropecunt Lane. I.e. 300 years before we gave the US our language to use freely, and corrupt, and most annoyingly remove 'u's from words such as 'honour'.
Fast forward. New Order are a band from the North of England, regularly dropping the word into their live performances for three decades. If you buy a live recording of them recorded by Brits in their own country, then don't fucking expect people to remove words your sensitive arse (ass) cannot handle.

Incidentally, Gropecunt Lane was in a medieval red light district within a stone's throw of the Troxy, and was named.. well what it says on the tin.
AND it's a better and less sexist term for the ladygarden than "vagina" which basically means "somewhere to put a cock".

The DVD Pumped full of drugs is full of swearing even the C@#t word numerous times. The only time I am aware of any New Order live material being edited was 'True faith' from Glastonbury, when Barney made the Michael Jackson comment.
I don't think they are going to start editing things out now. New Order live, has always been New Order live, lots of mistakes, swearing, equipment malfunctions, abuse at the audience etc etc.
If you're seriously upset and don't want one of your copies, I'll have it. They sent me a copy without Disc 1. Cunts.
The only thing that makes even less sense than objecting to cunt being uttered in a rock'n'roll live show/pissed up sense is going on to object to people commenting on that opinion, even though you've posted for all to see on a public discussion board in the first place.
My brain literally capsized at that "logic".

Burt, your such a silly fuck aren’t you? Your language? You mean the language that the German settlers and Norman invaders gave you. You know, those of you who reside in England and speak English. English is a West Germanic Language, brought to your country from Germany. *Your* language changed further in 1066 A.D. when King Harold was routed at Hastings by William of Normandy. William and his marry band of gents spoke Old Norman, hence, a large proportion of modern English comes directly from the Normans, and the Germans before them. English is very much a melting pot of languages, and very little of which originally derive from England itself. Even the name England comes from the name of a Germanic Tribe that settled there in the early middles ages.

Bernard also managed to swear live on the Rock Around The Clock broadcast where he managed to get in "Te;; me what the fuck we should do" in Blue Monday and that was being broadcast live on BBC2 as well as Radio1. But am I bothered nope.
I wonder... if probably one of the main reason Linus got interested in New Order in the first place were that he perceived New Order to be "clean", with little sex or naughty words?
I do seem to remember him being very negative towards all rap. I think he also complained about the "playing with my pleasure zone" line in Perfect Kiss.

The cunt word is totally overrated, isn't it? I've got a cock and you have a cunt. So if the most offensive thing in the english language you can say, relates to the female anatomy, it's a bit sad. If you do something wrong, and someone laughs and calls you a cock, no-one thinks anything about it, but if you were called a cunt, then it's different, when it really shouldn't be.
If someone says you eat maggots out of a festering sheeps arse, isn't that worse than being called a cunt?

Anyway, to expand the topic; does anyone else use 'cunt' as a phrasal verb? I think it's probably unique to us in the West of Scotland. eg
Q. Did you manage to get the phone number of that fetching young lady?
A. No, I got pished and cunted it right up.
Similarly, the word 'cunt' is very often used as term of endearment round these parts or as a non-specific signifier. One can be a 'good cunt' meaning a thoroughly all-round decent chap. Or one may make an observation that 'there's hardly any cunt in the place' meaning that the venue/location in question isn't particularly busy/well attended. Again, two uses of the word unique to our little pocket of the UK.

All used in the exactly same manner darn sarf too.
Cunting something up, no cunt in the place, etc. And also, of course, used as a term of endearment.

See? This is what I'm talking about! Learning stuff!!! Thread of the year indeed. I've never heard it used outwith my own neck of the woods. Glad it is though.
Not particularly nice language, and I'm guilty of using it far too often, but to be offended that a rock n' roll band haven't beeped the word out of a CD is silly.
I seem to recall that the word has some significance in radical feminism. It was an empowering word re-appropriated by nasty men down the centuries into a term of abuse. Or it might be the other way round. Or it originally meant something else all together. It's been a while since I read any Andrea Dworkin.

Interesting.
I'm so glad this thread is not dead (or closed) yet, so I can post another New Order video with the c-word on it.
Tony: "He's a musician which means he's a mean bastard." Bernard: "You cunt. You ruined my career."
I wouldn't take offence - it's nothing new. Not sure what the whole sentence was, but it's usually just a term of endearment in this context. In other contexts, i.e. the kid's birthday party etc... it may not go down so well.. so don't play it to the kids!

Think it was a scene in 24 Hour Party People though may have actually happened , Rob Gretton says to Tony Wilson "You know what your problem is, Tony? You don't know what you are"
Tony "Oh yeah, what am i then?"
Gretton "You're a cunt!"
Reading Lindsay Reade's book about Tony Wilson at the moment, he really was an utter cunt, wasn't he.
One of Salford Grammar School's toilet walls in 1967 bore the legend 'hunt the cunt'. The message was ambivalent as it was an all boys school but there was a German teacher called Hunt. I was not to know any of this and thought that cunt was just a word that rhymed with hunt so there was a somewhat embarrassed silence when I posed the question at home as to what exactly was a cunt. Back at school and sharing a Latin lesson with Barney and Hooky we learned about verbs such as lingus and nouns such as cunnus. What did the Romans ever do for us?
Common parlance around my friends, when things go enormously wrong is "It's cunted up the shitter."
