David...this one was discussed, in some detail, a while back...

several people heard something about

Love is the id, it supports the ego...or something very similar...

upon a majority vote, it was decided that Bernard couldn't write something so cerebral, and we all agreed that it was air and eagle, then we all met up for a beer or two, and all was right in the world...until fat flatulant bastards ruined it for all of us...

Originally posted by The Village Idiot yeah...well...I thought I heard them say something like this...Thoughts from above hurt good people down below....so who the hell knows what Barney really says...he probably can't even remember what lyrics he recorded for this, or any other, song....

I've always heard it as "Thoughts" or "Gods from above" hit the people down below!

Do JD lyrics count?

I remember arguing over several years with my friend Al about whether 'Shadowplay' contained the line:

'...with cold steel odour on their bodies,'

or:

'...and with cold steel loaded round their bodies.'

The ultimate controversy over lyrics still is:

Look at me I love you

or

Look at me I'm not you

on REGRET

It has been probably discussed to death in previous threads, mind.

It's Bolts from above hit the people down below. Definitively. There is no question about this.

Yes there is, other Benny !!!

ok, the lyrics page says 'bolts...hit', but i think 'thoughts...hurt' makes more sense. of course it could sound like either one. any thoughts on this?

Its definetly BOLTS. as in bolts of lightning. how can thoughts from above hurt anyone??

'New Order Music 1981 - 1989' Published by Warner Chapell (ISBN 0-86359-768-8) - New Order lyrics & guitar tabs - states that the lyrics to 'Temptation' are as follows:

'Bolts from above hit the people down below People in this world without no place to go'

Let's hear no more abnout it.

My fav is still... "Ive been waiting for a GUY to come and take me by the hand... Someone who can make me feel the pleasures of another man..." needless to say, I was taken aback by that, until my ex bought the book by Ian's wifey and we read the lyrics in the back. :rolling:

What about the electronic lyrics. Every time I play Reality off the first album I hear Barney sing: 'Can't you see there's nothing in your head, and your fart is on vacation'. Am I the only one?

Speaking of Electronic unusually the lyrics to TwistedTenderness are printed in the inlay.

Yes you're the only one. He who smelt it, dealt it.

I've given up trying to sing the lyrics correctly in NO songs. I sing what I THINK the words are at the top of my lungs (if possible) and just have fun. It's REALLY fun in the car on a warm day at a stop light with the windows down!!!!

i was thinking along the lines of ideological thoughts. like particular ideologies hurting the people on the bottom of society in economic, political or sociological ways. ...oh, f*ck it.

and for a brief period i thought the line in 'regret' was: 'look at me, i'm a jew.'

Maybe Barney was trying to make up for the Nazi accusations, perhaps?

At any rate I stand by my fave misinterpretation of lyrics, True Faith: "When I was a very small boy, very small boys tortured me.."

"Save it for another it, the school ends and the kids have run away"

I prefer my version :). I also thought BM was "I can in shallow bay". Something about a bay and beach, you know?

for the longest time, in JD's "day of the lords", i thought ian was saying "our hearts are the same but the bodies have changed." i still really like that line though.

I read an interview w/ Barney and Hooky right after "Technique" came out, and the question about lyrics came up. I can't remember if it was either Barney or Hooky who said it, but one of them said something to the effect that it doesn't matter, that what the lyrics mean to one person don't mean the same thing to another, and so forth...

But if I had a dollar for every time I heard different NO/JD lyrics from the originals, I'd be pretty rich now!

One of my misheard lyrics:

(Thieves Like Us) "Love is the cure for every evil, Love is, and it supports the ego It's called love, and it's so unclothed it's called love..."

i always thought 'picture me and then you start watching' in ceremony was 'picture me, in ten years time watching'....i fink ian was awar he was gonna kill himself soom when he wrote that, it seems like a kinda final good bye :,(

For years i always thought chosen time went "sometimes they keep you waiting...fuck around".

perfect kiss...precious soul instead of pleasure zone. i still like my version better.:D

Okay heres one from ROUND AND ROUND

I just remembered that for years i used to think that this line was...

"the picture you see is no portrait of me, its a reel to be shown, to someone i don't know"

then i thought it was...

"the picture you see is no portait of me, its surreal to be shown, to someone i don't know"

and this site says its...

"the picture you see is no portait of me, its too real to be shown, to someone i don't know"

so really im still none the wiser!!

did Barney say 'I was a virgin to myself' in Temptation? did Ian have 'a mask of sulphate' in Atmosphere?

I agree with everything this man says.

But then I convinced myself I could hear "it was aversion to myself I do believe"

.....so the lads at libero. are wasting their/our monday morning trying to recreate the cruyff turn with a rolled up ball of lecture notes..... happily avoiding doing our psychodynamics assignment.... singing along to confusion, theives like us etc.....as you do.... and that gets us talking about strange new order lyrics..... some of us are certain we did hear 'love is the id, it supports the ego' (this debate goes on for an hour) but the thing is...... the id doesn't support the ego... the ego manages the id... and the superego as well as it happens.... now all of which makes us sound a bit like our hero mr know-it-all cruyff (did you know johan cruyff was considered so complex he was assigned not just one analyst.... but two..... or so they say).... any how... we should get back to our homework.... melanie klein seems to be saying - bad breast resents baby - that sounds like it should be another n/o lyric.... we at team libero. love new order!

ps we suspect that we, like cruyff are probably stuck in our anal psycho-sexual stage............
