Not including festivals , but when have New Order been a support group? The only time I can think of is Robbie 'fat dancer' Williams about ten years ago, and Depeche Mode in 1986 for one gig. Any other ideas? :)

I know you said no festivals but they basically were a "support group" at Reading '98 because Garbage were the main headliner of the evening. Although obviously as it was NO's first festival appearance since the same festival in '93 they predictably and brilliantly blew Garbage off the stage.

interesting Steve Morris anecdote from the night in question:
"My cringe-worthy New Order memory was when we headlined in 1998. We had a really crap aftershow party, there was no food at all, so I wasn't in the best mood. I saw Gillian in a corner chatting to this dapper young bloke so I said '...and who the fucking hell are you???'. They both just looked at me a bit embarrassed, so I stomped off to get the last remaining food in the whole of Reading - a manky kebab. Then this handsome bloke got on our bus and came back to the hotel, which I thought was pretty cheeky for a hanger-on, so I stomped off to bed, still none the wiser. He was gone in the morning when I found out who he was, so, after all these years, Alex James from Blur, I'm sorry I was such a moody sod, and please accept this as a long overdue apology!"

And Hothouse Flowers in 93. Although rumour has it once HHF get on stage, they don't get off, so New Order went on before them (much to everyone's bemusement!)

I think that was not a happy experience for them as the young RHCP fans weren't too interested. As for 2012 I would prefer to travel to London to see them do a once off gig like they did at The Troxy than to go to Dublin to see them support a a band I had no interest in seeing..

anyway thanks for the reminder, discovered elephants beer on that trip and have kept off it ever since.
They were second on the bill at Futurama in 82, let Blancmange top the bill so we could go of clubing down the hac,, they also played the support set in goldiggers club chippenham in 84 as the support band were stuck on the boat coming across from Ireland,, didt stay around to check if they topped the bill.

that's right, when I saw them in Massachusetts August 1987 they opened for Echo...
Pretty sure it was Billy Bragg they supported at Sheffield city Hall! Though they were introduced by Martin Fry. If ABC played I had already fucked off home.
