Supporting Blur? I must underestimate Blur's stature.

I hope they don't have to lipsync like at the Commonwealth Games in '98.

Let's face it, this gig is either gonna be free with tickets coming via a lottery.

Or it's gonna be 100+ notes instead just to get proper fans in, or folk who give a shit about the 'Lympics.

The Telegraph's highly informed thoughts on Neworder...

"New Order, growing out of Joy Division, fused that bands gloomy aesthetic to electronic dance music, the tension between their mordant soundscapes and ecstatic rhythms somehow standing in opposition to the frivolity and gaudy excess that characterised British pop in the Thatcher era. The dour Manchester combo offered an antidote to escapism, the title of their 1983 debut album, Power, Corruption and Lies indicating that this was serious music for serious times."

I suppose we should be grateful they just about swerved the "rising from the ashes of joy Division" cliche.

I do wonder what Jerry Dammers thinks to The Specials agreeing to this tawdry Tory smarmfest

If any of these bands had any integrity left it's completely gone now

You wouldn't get me there if you paid me

OK, so one or two (or three, or four) of blur members may be tossers, but they've knocked together a few decent pop tunes. I'd rather listen to blur's pop than the utter UTTER sh!te that passes for indie these days.

If you don't believe me, check out tunes like "this is a low".

The Specials have been touring without Dammers for a few years now, actually. He didn't want to to return to the band, from what I understand. A lot of casual fans probably think Terry Hall writes the songs, haha.

I don't see how New Order doing this show affects their integrity. The current line up of New Order includes 3/4ths of the original line up, including the band's main songwriter/vocalist/captain, plus a fellow who's been part of the band for a decade now. It IS still New Order, just minus the one fellow who quit and now has no integrity at all.

It is an odd bill though...New Order are so stylistically different from Blur and The Specials....and I would imagine their are as well, given that New Order are a lot more left field than both Blur and the Specials. I'd imagine Alex James, being friends with Bernard, offered them the gig.

Sure is - to quote the website:

"VIP Packages There will be VIP packages available at Hyde Park delivered by Live Nation Experience the leading producer of VIP ticket packages at live music events. Since 2004 Live Nation Experience has specialised in the creation, sale and fulfilment of VIP packages on tours, special events and festivals.

On sale date for packages to be announced soon, please register for more information about VIP Packages."

So ho, hum. Still be trying to get tix via BT 'cos it should be a laugh - Hyde Park was last time - what I can remember of it - great meet up before, managed to get lost between pub and Hyde Park and there's still a 'Special Guest' to be announced, what other legends are there left?? :)

It lessens their integrity because the Tories have used this whole event for various reasons - tents are now illegal outside the stadium - the ten year protest outside Parliament was decimated for the Olympics - various roadways in London will be closed for VIPs - and near the site itself - even now people who live close to the site are being stopped and searched (some being thrown against the wall). People's rights are being eroded and to construct the Olympic village people's homes were lost.

I know about Dammers not playing for years - I was remarking on his political principles. He would never have allowed the band to play this event - and knowing The Specials are playing this Boris Johnson luvvie event is even worse than knowing New Order are playing it.

I think you're ascribing a whole bunch of political weight to it that isn't there : it's a gig on the day of the closing ceremonyt of the Olympics, it's not exactly called "WE FUCKING LOVE THE TORIES", is it? I doubt that N.O. will have jettisoned the political leanings they made clear in the 80's.

Agreed, it's a bit bizarre to think if any other political party had been in charge this concert would have been any different or somehow shown more "integrity".

I have zero love for the Olympics, I think they're a total waste of time & money but the bid was won under Labour, the wars the Parliament Square tents were pitched in protest at were started under Labour and whether it's Ken or Boris in London Mayor HQ this gig would be going ahead in an identical manner. The Olympic village redevelopment plans were also approved under Labour as the Coalition's only been in for 2 years.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes the Tories more than deserve a slagging but in this instance it's a bit wayward to have a go at them over a pop concert like this which would have occurred anyway.

Bang on mark, what a fantastic opportunity to go down in history as one of the bands who were involved in the closing of the Olympics. Btw I also think blur are a great band.

Good memory.

I DO like Kasabian, however,as i put in a post on here when velociraptor came out, they are not consistent enough, some of their songs are a bit "tweedy" (not to be confused with that goerdie bint either!) Musically,Kasabian are fare superior than any of the shite that those two monobrowed cunts have ever done, again thats my opionion. As someone who hated the shitpop era and the stupid fuckin sensationalist journalism that came with the "battle of the bands" shite,it makes sense for me to dislike oashite and Blur with a passion.

Britpop is what got me listening to bands, so I can't hate it really.

I mean, I'd prefer to have the radiowaves filled with britpop era indie than the dross today for example, a lot of the bands might have been rubbish, but at least they were bands.

I liked Blur and Oasis too, before I got into New Order.

This is England though. I don't see how New Order are particularly 'leftfield' over here.

Should imagine there's a big crossover between Specials and New Order fans (especially from the people I know here) as a lot of folk are of 'a similar age' (and then you even get the 'youngsters' like Shug going to both). Blur are definitely the odd one out of those three, I'd have said, and even then not massively different.

I am thinking of a situation sort of like where Morrissey opened for Madness, and a bunch of Madness loving yobs booted him off the stage (you know, macho boot boys tend to hate Morrissey).

Now this is an extreme example....but I always figured that the sorts of subcultures formed around a group like Madness wouldn't jive much with New Order. That I could be wrong about though.

I think New Order are left field compared to Blur and the Specials, sonically and also in every other way.

Morrissey didn't get booted off stage. He had a few things thrown at him and then didn't show for the second night. And, quite frankly, did himself no favours anyway turning up draped in a Union Flag at an event which was always likely to attract a right-wing element. You play with fire, you get burned.

Anyway, that was 20 years ago. I don't see its relevance today, not its relation a band like New Order. And I'd also go on to say that the sort of subcultures who formed around the likes of Madness and the Specials are exactly the same subcultures who affix themselves to the likes of New Order over here. Attendance of folk from this forum at the comeback Specials gigs two years ago only confirms this.

Absolutely. That particular incident didn't have much to do with "macho boys hating" rather an ill-advised "artistic" flirting with far right-wing imagery. I personally don't believe that Moz is a racist and some of his songs from that era are misunderstood (We'll Let You Know & National Front Disco) but still he played with fire and well, there you go... it was a bad call at the time and has gone down in UK music history as an indisputable bad call by His Mozness.

However, it was slightly ironic only a few years later Noel Gallagher was playing a Union Jack guitar and nobody batted an eye-lid. In fact they were going "mad fer it" but that was the start of a completely different "era"...

Exactly. It's interesting that the press crucified Moz for wearing that Union Jack flag, when just a few years later, Blur, Oasis, Bowie, and may other Brit Pop groups were lauded for it.

And yeah, Morrissey isn't racist at all, but a few of his songs were misunderstood to stay the least.

I don't know much about the Specials fan base as they don't have much of one here in the US. I know they are par on legends in the UK though (and a great band).

Yeah but to be honest (and we're taking the thread off topic a bit) Moz really should have known better. He was associating himself with some very specific imagery and used big skinhead photograph backdrops for his live shows. He knew what he was doing. Again, I definitely don't think he's a racist but he was simply being Morrissey which results in that sort of stuff but never takes into account that a large chunk of people won't "get it".

The later stuff by bands like Oasis was just them using a flag to denote a musical movement which the press had coined "Britpop". They weren't sticking up massive fucking pictures of skinheads and writing songs about the National Front who were/are an extremely poisonous influence on UK society.

You will note that by 1994 he had completely abandoned all that.

Whoever won the bid, David Cameron and his cronies are balls deep and utterly relishing involvement in all aspects of the Olympics and they dont give a flying f*** who is affected by the behemoth.

Our heroes accepting an invite to play this linked event is about as far from "punk" as can be.

I fully agree, but then 'Crystal' and 'World In Motion' are hardly New Order's finest songs ,yet are two of the most popular ones. I detested the group 'James' for years as I hated the song 'Sit Down'. It's only in the last year i've realised what a fantastic group they are.

Agree with Ger Boy in this instance, the most popular songs by certain bands are rarely the best nor the ones you listen to the most. Blur's most well known are Parklife, Country House, Song 2 etc. but those are definitely the ones I listen to the least. They're shite basically.

I do remember having Think Tank on heavy rotation just under ten years ago and that album is about as least successful and as far away from mockney pop as you can get; just a nice understated set of songs which require a bit of effort and repeated listens to appreciate.

Also, Albarn is a genuinely talented musician which Gorillaz has also shown both commercially and critically; not everything he touches turns to gold but most does. Credit where it's due.

Everyone knows that the Olympics is a just big excuse for a jamboree and diverting attention from failures governments are involved in whether it be the economy, foreign policy etc. I don't agree with the waste spent on it nor the Diamond Jubilee but they'd all be doing it regardless of political persuasion. If Brown was still in charge he'd be up there with his constipated smile trying to do a rap whilst swinging the Olympic torch in an awkward manner. It's not new news.

Tock wrote: Our heroes accepting an invite to play this linked event is about as far from "punk" as can be.

I'm sure I remember NO playing for some Royals in the '80s so why didn't you renounce your loyalty then? Or trotting out Temptation at the Commonwealth Games in '98? At least some regular kids will be taking part for the UK in these Olympics. The "punk" dream has been over for some time really; the real world came calling long ago. Even Hooky was allegedly approached to do Celeb Big Brother but offered his place to Bez (who went onto win, ouch) due to illness at the time.

Anyway, here's Johnny Rotten remaining true to his punkish roots:

I don't think Gordon Brown would have been quite so keen as Cameron in his involvement. Cameron is a cock. Brown for all his many faults had some humility.

I do not see how Hooky surrendering his Big Brother place indicates that we all should accept our lot because the "real world came calling". Are people not getting fucked over by the Olympic machine? Should they just accept it cos Hooky let his place go on CBB!

I refer to "punk" as an attitude, not some nostalgic notion.

A f*** you anti-establishment attitude which inspired the creation of the very band we are talking about.

I pointedly said filthy lucre.....Rotten may have done an embarrassing volte face* but Barney always maintains New Order have "punk" integrity.

(*Although he did justify doing it as a way of financing the PiL reformation....)

Playing one song in manc for the commonwealth games (I have no recollection of them playing for royalty!) is entirely different.

Playing this large scale event damages that "punk" integrity in my opinion but its not quite enough for me to "renounce my loyalty". It doesnt really work like that.

Now if they started to give interviews slagging off cancer surviving ex-members....err.

Ha. Funny.

Never have two equally shite songs gone head to head in a battle to prove which one was, perhaps, not as shite as the other to the record buying public.

Shame on you for falling for that marketing exercise in 1995.

That's bollocks. I think New Order have always been mostly apolitical but if pushed I think they would reveal they lean towards the left. Certainly Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson were from a leftist background.

Good God. I've not seen that since it was aired. Thank you. :thumb:

Never seen the complete footage before either, just remember the Beeb running, literally, a 30-second snippet at the end of the news!

New Order played on March 1, 1988, at 'UK/LA 88 Festival' fashion show, playing before English royalty, among others.

I keep a safe distance from Specials & Madness shows nowadays. Too many knobedds & scraps. Even Zieg Heiling in Toon' @ Sham 69 gigs & SLF. Regardless of the Mozzer show at Finsbury park (which i went to) Madness still had card carrying roadie members of the British movement & later Skrewdriver. Nasty fuckers. Much prefered (& still do) lefty bollocks from Angelic Upstarts, Crass & Conflict. Which was always fun being from the other side politically. Anyway....New Order only gonna play 45 mins probs.

That's bollocks. I think New Order have always been mostly apolitical but if pushed I think they would reveal they lean towards the left. Certainly Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson were from a leftist background.

gretton and wilson may have been to the left but that doesnt mean the band were to be honest. think the jon savage interview with bernard goes into things like that.

the left is a very broad term anyway, the band may be left leaning on social issues but may well be right leaning economically i.e not keen on socialism or communism.

Playing a gig supporting the miner's strike, perhaps (to name but one example)?

live aid supporting feeding people in africa would be considered left wing but i honestly find it hard to believe that some of those musicians like eric clapton and the coke fuelled junkies who played live aid would be left wing. its not always black and white.

as far as im aware as a foreigner, the actual grievances the miners had were overtaken by the more militant left union leaders battle to break thatcher or vice versa.

miners lost out when it became the scargill v thatcher battle.

Shouldn't Blur be supporting New Order. Tsk Tsk. No respect for the elders honestly. Maybe Blur will do the right thing on that dim and distant day when NO finally pick up their Outstanding Brit Award.

Bah!

Blur were the next, younger generation and therefore their audience is more active (in their mid-30s), while New Order fans are in their mid-40s. And to be honest, I encountered more people enthusiastic about Blur than New Order. New Order's fame is based on their 80s output when they were too indie, i.e. less appealing to the masses.

You made some good points about ordinary people being displaced due to massive fucking pointless stadiums being constructed, overall we'd probably agree on that.

But sorry Brown would have been all over the Olympics like a rash and to assume otherwise is a bit naive. The Olympics are a big meal ticket for any politician regardless of ideology to look good, look in charge and at the heart of something big, swanky and successful. As for Brown's humility? Er, that's another discussion for another forum.

Anyway, I'll be aiming to pick up a few tickets on Friday morning

This is labouring a small point but Brown was a reluctant (and rubbish) public figure I feel - however his ambition forced him to play the modern PR game and would have forced him to be an Olympic Court Jester.

Cameron positively loves the PR game which is very plain to see I would have thought.

Don't get me wrong I am not Brown supporter but I hate bully boy Cameron and his cronies. The bands/fans/people are the Court Jesters and peasants in their eyes while they lord it up.

By all means enjoy the gig, I just wish our heroes did not accept the invite to take part in it.

me too but i dont think Blur songs have aged that well. I dont know what it is about new order but even though sometimes the production is clunky and production always dates, the songs still sound fresh to me.

Blur is a fairly appropriate name for them, if the Brits shambles was anything to go by.

And as I was horrified by The Specials return shows (great to hear the music but time hadn't been kind to Terry's sense of timing), I think I shall be giving this one a miss.

As much as I enjoy the New Order craic and live in eternal hope that one day something old will be unveiled (how times change, throughout the 80s we turned up every week in the hope of seeing a new song!), the idea of standing through exactly the same borefest every show, with the programmed videos (how much is actually live?) has got me glad that I have tons of happy memories of the old days.

New Order are more LIVE now than they have been since 2001, at least. More of the synth and programmed parts are played now, and even some of the lower basslines are being played live.

I'm not so sure. I have grave reservations as to how live the vocals are, and the linking to videos has got me fearing/suspecting that the good old Akai is the most significant member of the band these days!!!!! :evil4:

New Order have been using some sequenced harmonized backing vocals on live tracks since 1986 (listen to live versions of Paradise, Round and Round, True Faith, Dream Attack, and World from that era).

Synchronizing video screens to live performance isn't that hard when you are using sequenced tracks that dictate where the verses and choruses come in.

For instance, these days, tracks like Crystal, Krafty, True Faith, and 586 are more live than ever.

Crystal - Live keyboards on the verses (Gillian plays live what was once sequences), Phil on guitar plus keyboards, Bernard on Guitar, Steve on drums, Tom play low and high bass parts, with backing vocals and synth pads sequenced.

Krafty - Gillian plays keyboards on choruses, which used to be sequenced, plus all of the above.

Regret - Gillian plays live keyboards, which were sequenced when she was out of the band.

1963 - Tom plays the low end bass part that used to be programmed, plsy live guitar from Phil, live keys from Gillian, live drumming from Steve.

Round and Round - Live keyboards from Gillian, Live guitar from Phil, live drums from Steve, Tom plays both bass leads and low end programmed bass.

586 - Gillian plays synth bass parts in the intro, then plays melody parts on the verses and choruses, plus her synth solo. Bernard and Phil Play guitar, Tom plays low end bass parts, live drumming from Steve.

True Faith - The most live it has ever been. Gillian plays lead melody and chorus keyboard parts live, Phil plays all of the chord synth parts live, Tom plays lead bass lines plus low end programmed bass lines on the verses, live guitar from Barney, live drums from Steve, with sequencers doing their usual bits.

I'd say they are more "live" than ever these days.

Blur are the most over-rated band in the entire universe. Some good singles, some hit'n'miss albums and some truly dire B-sides. There's a story going round - may not be true, but simply the fact it goes round in the first place is significant - that Blur were contacted by their record label, 'We need some B-sides, we've booked a studio tomorrow afternoon, can you bash 'em out?' Now check Suede's Sci-Fi Lullabies and ask yourself if Suede ever knocked 'em out. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of Blur, just when you hear journos comparing 'em to the Beatles... Incidentally, Alex James (a huge JD fan) played with BL, he was rumoured to be up for Freebass too once.

Suede did knock a few hurried b-sides out, such as Digging A Hole, and Feel (which aren't on Sci Fi Lullabies) - which were "You have an afternoon, do some songs.". But generally, they spent more time on songs than that!

Personally I always rated Suede over both Blur and Oasis. They seemed to give a lot more care and attention to every aspect of their work - recordings, gigs, fan club, the lot. Check out the recent album rereleases and you'll find true labours of love, certainly pissing over stuff like 'Inernational'. Love the band! Love NO too, but that's another story.

Are Bleurgh going to split up again for good after the Olympics then?

I mean, Damon Allbran is earning enough with Gorillaz isn't he? And Alex is minting it with his cheese-making factory or summat, whilst Dave The Failed Pilot is now a candidate for the House Of Commons, whilst that other geeky bloke Coxon is forever doing his solo groove thang isn't he?

So what is the point of them reforming?
