Peter Hook & The Light perfom 'Still' live at Factory Manchester 18/5/12 & 19/5/12

Peter Hook And The Light perform 'Still', the third and final of Joy Division’s releases live, sequentially and in its entirety for the first time at The Factory in Manchester on Friday 18th May and Saturday 19th May 2012.

Released in October 1981 to counter the slew of unofficial and bootleg releases which followed Ian Curtis’ death, “Still” firstly comprised studio out-takes and mainly unreleased or lesser heard tracks while the second side is a live recording of Joy Divisions’ last ever concert at High Hall, Birmingham on 2nd May 1980.

At the concert Hooky and The Light are to perform each disc separately, starting with the studio recording and then replicating the final ever Joy Division concert in a double header alongside various other tracks from the band's back catalogue.

In what has now become an annual event, Hooky & The Light will perform the 'Still' gigs in association with Mind, a mental health charity, and Forever Manchester, a charity supporting local initiatives within the city.

Suggestion though Jack, for future shows once the Still stuff has been done: maybe start doing gigs that aren't just an album in track list order. Part of the magic of Joy Division, and indeed New Order up until 1987, was that the punter genuinely had no idea what song was coming next from one night to the next. You've got enough songs in the bag now to be able to do 16/20 song gigs that cover the full JD canon. Besides, certain combinations like Dead Souls/Wilderness, Colony/Insight, Transmission/Disorder and SLC/Shadowplay just got together naturally!

I don't think so mate - it's important to us that these gigs have a concept, and I think it would be a shame to lose the concept of playing the records in full. You're right you could make some killer setlists but we are lucky in that we have managed to create great setlists that still allow the concept of playing the two amazing records in track order as they were meant to be heard. As for the 3 Movement tracks we did... they seemed to go down really well in Buxton so let's see...

I take your point, but..... these songs are different beasts live to how they were on record, it's impossible to recreate the subtlety of the record in a live setting as by nature you need greater volume to soak up crowd members getting in the way of the sound waves. Unknown Pleasures works as an album in the order it does because of these subtleties, as does Closer (apart from Atrocity being totally out on a limb as opener). By all means play all the songs from an album/era, but bear in mind that the order they were sequenced for the record was for the record, not for a live setting. JD would have played them in that order had they been!

I think the tracklisting of the albums happen to work really well as live sets to be honest, and Still will be the same I reckon.

well, chronologically, it would make sense to do stage re-enactments of all the events in May 1980.

Peter Hook set to complete fundraising trilogy for Mind.

Peter Hook is set to support Mind for a third successive year with two fundraising gigs in Manchester this May.

The former Joy Division bassist will complete a trilogy of live performances of his former band’s releases as current band, Peter Hook And The Light, performs the double album ‘Still’ for the first ever time at The Factory, Manchester on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May.

On completing the set of Joy Division’s releases with these concerts, Peter Hook said:

"It’s somewhat bittersweet since I honestly wish there were more to go really but I am very happy that now with ‘Still’ I will have played every Joy Division song ever written, again.

I am delighted that The Light are performing Joy Division’s final release in what seems set to be the final Light/Joy Division gigs in Manchester and I’m looking forward to a couple of great concerts to finish up the trilogy properly."

As with the previous two years, the concerts will raise money for Mind and local charity Forever Manchester, which supports numerous community-based initiatives.

Mind Chief Executive Paul Farmer said:

For a third successive year, his efforts to raise vital funds and awareness will help us to continue to provide support and advice for anyone experiencing a mental health problem."

Although I would love to hear The Light playing New Order stuff, I really want to see them play an entirely original set, that would shut up a lot of people, I know you're working on it,just hope it happens soon.

Was thinking this myself today. The Light's JD performances are stellar instrumentally, but it would be nice to shuffle the cards a bit and chucking in some new The Light songs will keep everything fresh in the long term.
