Sounds like one of those misguided folks who thinks Hooky somehow wrote all of the songs in New Order wrote that review.

Barney is 56, he looks good for his age.

I think in the old days, Steve was responsible for determining the set order (loading floppy's and whatnot). I can't believe the new tech, video included, is the cause of the rigidity.

I see your point, but I have to respectfully disagree in that I think the way they pace their set is perfect.

When a band plays live, especially a legendary band who plays in front of big crowds like New Order, set pacing is very important. I think that opening with atmospheric rocky numbers such as Crysal amps up the crowd, and I prefer them playing the guitar stuff in the first half, with the second half featuring all of the huge dance hits, turning the show into a massive strobelight dance party.

Having the dance numbers climax the set also works because most people who know New Order love the dancey stuff, and to the casual punter, the dancey stuff would have the most energy.

A for Blue Monday....a lot of people here on the forum are sick of it...but Blue Monday is a massive, LEGENDARY song and for most of the people at the show, it is going to be one of, if not THE, highlight of the set. Opening with it would be blowing their load too early.....you need to give the crowd something to build to.

Me, I never tire of hearing Blue Monday and if I saw them and they didn't play it, I would be pissed.

Keep in mind, most of the people going to the concerts don't post here or follow the setlists online, you know?

I think the sets as they are now are almost perfect...here is my ideal set for this tour though, for the hell of it (and yes I think they should play 20 songs).

Mostly agree with your post (took it out to save reposting so much). The crowd definitely got going towards the end with the dancier tracks so I'm with you on that one. I think Here To Stay confused a lot of people, especially the old geezers I was next to.

If I can get nitpicky, because I have a sense of entitlement now that I've seen them, I would scrap Krafty. It never does anything for me. They have other tracks with just as much if not more energy.

I certainly agree they could do two encores. The crowd knew the first one was coming because Barney said they would be playing JD songs. I like the idea of Ceremony there, because it has a lot of oomph these days.

I see your point as well, but I don't want perfection. I want New Order to wriggle out of their comfort zone every once in a while. If they opened with Blue Monday, minds would be blown. Most fans think they have plenty of tracks that eclipse Blue Monday in quality.

When I saw them in September 1987, they opened with Touched by the Hand of God, a track that hadn't been released yet. This was not unusual for their 1st few years of existence but is unfathomable now.

Give a listen to some bootlegs from 1980-1988. You won't hear perfection, but you will hear why so many of us follow the band decades later.

p.s. I've seen quite a variety of acts* in concert, so I know how it works. When I go to a show, I expect something more than what I can get from the recorded work.

Two Door Cinema Club, dang, I missed them when they toured Oz last year.....the 'Tourist' album is quite good, like a catchy Bloc Party....

This was my 5th time seeing New Order since 1987. What struck me about the show was how talkative Barney has become, and how much they were enjoying playing again. Barney's singing has also come a long way since I first saw them!

For me the highlight of the set was the run of songs through True Faith, 586, and the majestic Perfect Kiss (still my all time favorite) and Temptation. Ceremony is also sounding as great as ever.

It was great to get an unexpected Here to Stay, although it was amazing how few in the crowd seemed to know it! I suspect it also needs to be played a few more times before it hits its peak live!

Slight negatives- I'm not convinced 1963 is great live, and I could do without Blue Monday these days. There are also many better songs than Krafty from the last two albums. The addition of Transmission and Leave me Alone would be perfect from my perspective, and perhaps Thieves like Us for 1963 .

Anyway it was a great gig, and from the front it seemed the crowd got into it. I suspect the 2002 metro show topped it, and their previous trip to Festival Hall in 1987 was great, but for 2012 it was better than could be expected. Bring on Sunday!

Yes, when they played 'Here To Stay', 'Crystal' and '1963' the music videos were shown on the back drop... Amusing watching Sumner sing Crystal with the 'fake' band miming in the back ground.

They DID use the 'Here To Stay' music video in the show...(?). And as for Barney being pissed off, I thought he seemed really chilled. I met him after the gig and he said he was really happy with how it went, and that 'New Zealand was really flat by comparison". Incidentaly, Barney's fave song they played at Festival Hall was '1963'. He reckoned he 'nailed that one.'!
