One was admittedly groundbreaking, and the other was a PSB pastiche which sent the Order global.

true faith is one of the few songs that ive never tired of listening too and from a musical point of view thats pretty special when you write a song like that.
I despise Blue Monday.
I just got so sick of hearing it. Like, at our place (the uni) that's all they ever seem to stick on whenever they have the decency to actually PLAY a fricking New Order record.

You have to recall though how it felt to hear for the first time back in 1983.. Although True Faith is my most listened to song ever so I voted for that.

To say nothing of it's debut at the 1982 gigs. Imagine that beat pounding out of the PA to everyone's ears for the first time. The crowd probably thought the drum machine was malfuntioning.
I was 13 the very first time that I heard Blue Monday, it was the coolest, coldest, most enigmatic sounding record that I had ever heard, it changed my life. It is a brilliant record and I never tire of hearing it. I love when they play it live and add stuff to it.
Also, Blue Monday is a great SONG. It has an awesome, eerie melody and fantastic lyrics, and it can be performed and sang lots of different ways. The chord sequence is simple but superb.
True Faith is a brilliant song! Brilliant melody, performance, arrangement, production, with some of Bernards best vocals and one of his very best lyrics. It is an amazing song, uplifting and powerful, sweeping and epic, but also very sad and moving, all at the same time.
True Faith especially resonates with me because I grew up in a very bad inner city neighborhood where hope is rather lacking, and I watched a lot of people I grew up with turn into drug addicts.
My younger brother became a Heroin addict and once told me that after getting high, he knew that if he saw the sun rise he could sleep without fear of dying. That's what Bernard means when he says "I used to see my life in the shade of the morning sun."
Brilliant.
It'd a tie for me. I think that Blue Monday and True Faith are New Orders two single greatest recordings.
Oh don't get me wrong, it was groundbreaking back in 1983, when I was but a pre-teen (obviously I was oblivious to it until some years later when, through getting into Echo and the Bunnymen, I then discovered JD and New Order)... but now, it just sounds a bit........well......dated.
Trying to recall the very first time i heard Blue Monday... i think it was actually when they did it on Top Of The Pops, March 83. So i heard the live version before the actual 12". Vaguely recall thinking how shit it sounded on TOTP but i was only 14 and wasn't even aware of New Order then. First time i heard the recorded studio version must have been on the Top 40 chart rundown on Radio 1.. maybe April ish 83.Wasn't til it re entered the charts in September 83 that i felt a sudden urge to go out and buy it.It wasn't the song that converted me to New Order or changed my life though, that honour goes to Age Of Consent which i heard for the first time around October 83 when my brother bought P,C & L. Rarely listen to Blue Monday these days, if ever. I'd more likely play The Beach if anything.
True Faith, yep loved it to death when it first came out- summer 87 great times. Again, like BM, i never listen to it now.
Actually come to think of it i did put on the 12" vinyl of BM a few weeks back, but only to see in what state my stylus is in, if it needs replacing. Quite enjoyed listening to it though so i've voted for it

I remember listening to blue monday all night many nights on the trot thinking it was absolutely amazing, which it still is. I'd listen on headphones switching the balance and listening to it completely on each side, hearing all the overspill form the main reverb and things like that, I was into production techniques even at the age of 14, though I did't realise it at the time.
True faith is overplayed by New Order and Blue Monday is overplayed by everyone else, but both ARE brilliant tracks. BM picks it for me as more innovative and was one of the tracks that chaged the face of music

I was all of 10 years old when BM was released. So I wasn't that much aware of it, being a kid growing up in the Isle Of Man and having just moved to the mainland with my parents kinda meant my upbringing was sheltered from a lot of what was happening in the charts.
Mind you, I was into a fair few embarrassing hit records around that time.....flamin' Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, Tears For Fears, Flock of Seagulls and bands like that.....

Let's be fair, they are probably the two best known 'hits' by New Order.
Both are brilliant tracks in their own right... but Blue Monday edges it for me by being so far ahead of its time, it has dated a little nowadays but still gets people on the dancefloor. True Faith is a better 'song' and a beautiful track... but not half as ground breaking, it's far more commercial sounding in a way that it could almost be a Pet Shop Boys or The Beloved track, whilst Blue Monday is just New Order.

I was 12 when BM was in the charts,I first heard of it and New Order when in school a fellow student was tapping out the intro to the song on his desk before class commenced on an afternoon in September 1983, I was intrigued so on my next trip to town I bought it, I used to play it on an old style record player that could play 45's, 33's and 78's. Then for me New Order disappeared only to emerge again in 1987 with True Faith. Sadly the following year New Order released Blue Monday '88 which to me is the moment when the decline began, re-releasing a single 5 years after it had been recorded seemed then and still seems such a Phil Collins type thing to do.
That year 1988 was NOTORIOUS FOR THE 1988 REMIX. I guess New Order were part of the malaise when they re-mixed Blue Monday (or rather, allowed Quincy Jones to re-mix it). Everybody and anybody - yes, including fucking Phil Collins - jumped on the 1988 remix bandwagon that year. For fucks sakes, even the likes of Blondie had a 1988 remix out that year - what the fuck was going on with so many pathetic sheep (record company pressure to follow the herd possibly?) bringing out '88 remixes - be they old defunct bands or current pop puppets. It was utterly dire.

I'd like to know what BM would have sounded like if Quincy Jones really had remixed it. Instead he chucked it to a guy called John Potoker, better known for remixing some of the artists below and said: "Oi John, make this more MTV/radio frendly for an American audience, maybe Qwest/Warners can make some money out of this"...or words to that effect. Even 157 years after first hearing it, I still love Blue Monday. Never liked True Faith, hated the video and the song has bored me for 25 years.
