Morrissey's Inevitable Return?

Gentleman, ladies ... did anyone hear Mancs. self-declared lyrical genius and vitally important wordsmith Morrissey on 'BBC Radio 2' on Wednesday night at 12midnight? - a small repertoire of songs were meant to be broadcast, (new songs?) alongside a run down on Matlock's current observations of the world.

Yes, the consumer monkey's return to musical life seems imminent after a three year hiatus in LA, the city of angels and x-Smiths singers ... I've heard big Steve has been dining out and having a right 'ole knees up unlike his seemingly Greenpeace'like existence in the UK. Do films beckon the 6.3ft legendary giant?

In contradiction to recent reports on this very site it would seem Moz. is on the verge of being unleashed to an unexpected (and slightly passive towards solo-monkey) musical world.

Will his reception be as welcome as usual? - scraping chart position no. 15 after no promotion? - a TOTP performance featuring The Smiths look-a-likes in tweed jackets and a wicked lashing of the mic. lead? ... I do hope so.

Anyone hear this interview ... anyone prepared to inform on Moz?

One thing is absolutely certain, the album will be 35-40 minutes long of mediocrity to be followed up by 3 passable singles at 7 dollars a pop. A greatest hits collection is soon to follow...

I've read a few things about Morrissey's comeback including a newspaper interview with him but there's something I'm not sure about. There is talk of a new Morrissey album called something like "English Blood, Irish Heart" but has this album actually been recorded or is he going to record it if/when he gets a record deal?

Some of the things I've read have given the impression that the album is complete. However, in some of the things I've read Morrissey has been quoted about being turned down by labels some of which wanted to hear demos but if the album is complete he could have played them the album. Besides, if the album is complete I'm sure there are labels which would offer to release it (such as Alan McGee's Poptones for starters).

Has anyone heard anything more definite or are all these stories part of the Morrissey myth?

'English Blood, Irish Heart' is already recorded (so I've heard from my coz) but he's had trouble getting a record deal, thus no release. I haven't been tempted yet to indulge in Mozza's solo work just yet, I want to complete my Smiths collection first.

As for reunion, well, as long as they don't embarass themselves by releasing yet another "best of". You'd think Mike Joyce would be happy living on the dole, but NNNNOOOOO!

Thanks for the info on the new album, Taboo. However, if Morrissey has recorded a new album it wouldn't cost record companies that much to press it up and distribute it and given that he has a long track record of success and a fanatical following it shouldn't need that much promotion. That makes me think that there are three possible reasons why no record company has signed him:

1. His new album isn't good enough.
2. No record company believes that his fanbase is big enough to make releasing the album worthwhile to them.
3. Morrissey is asking record companies for too much money to make releasing the album worthwhile to them.

I paid a quick visit to the Morrissey solo website mentioned earlier and given that the reactions of posters there to the new songs were mixed I suspect that the reason why no record company has signed him is because his new album isn't good enough. Unless a record company signs him or he releases the album himself Morrissey's comeback isn't inevitable.

By the way, the last Smiths compilation ("The Very Best Of The Smiths" for those who've lost track) was criticised by Johnny Marr (who said he had nothing to do with the release and told fans not to buy it) and Morrissey (who said it was a shoddy product). I doubt WEA will release another compilation (even if no one at the company has listened to "Paint A Vulgar Picture") bceause the last one flopped. However, if they do release another one it will probably be called "The Smiths' Greatest Hits", it will feature a remix of "Panic" by someone called Morris C and the front cover will feature a still from the scene in "Carry On Camping" where Barbara Windsor's bra flies off.

i think the album cover would have to be done in andy warhol 'marilyn' colours. first marilyn, then babs windsor. it's a natural progression....

It would be in colour but it would be a close-up of Barbara Windsor so only those Smiths fans who have done sufficient research on the subject of British films and TV programmes of the 1950's and 1960's would know what film the still was taken from and therefore feel superior to non-Smiths fans and those Smiths fans who are not truly devoted and therefore do not spend their spare time seeking out the inspiration for Morrissey's lyrics, clothing and artwork.

Those devoted and knowledgeable Smiths fans would buy the album the day it came out even though they already had all the tracks on it. If anyone asked them why they would say they bought it because they are a Smiths completist but the truth would be that they bought it so they could have a wank over the picture of Barbara Windsor (whilst of course leaving the album out of the firing line because getting spunk on it would be an insult to Morrissey). Once they had had a wank over it they would feel guilty, wonder whether they were still celibate or whether wanking didn't count as sex and then debate the issue on a Morrissey discussion forum on the Internet.

Morrissey would buy it in import a few weeks later, fax Q magazine to criticise the artwork and then have a wank over it.
