I don't know how Bernard is in private, or how he works, or whether he has a 'diva' attitude or not...in fact I don't care. But at least he has the courtesy to generally watch what he says to the press.

Bottom line is probably that Barney and Hooky just rubbed each other up the wrong way (not the fault of either party, it's just one of those things in life). Stephen (and Gillian) needed a good think about which way they were gonna side, and decided to go with Barney as that seemed the more obvious choice what with him being the lead singer. Anyway, on to another point, why is everyone here so suddenly concerned with Barney's happiness? It amazes me, how many times this has come up, people posting gig reports basically saying, "Well, at least the band look happy now." I don't really give a shit if Barney's happy or not. What's it got to do with me? Or indeed, anyone else? If I'd seen New Order as a youngster and Barney was some happy-clappy dick, and there was no edge to the music whatsoever, no air of indifference, or indeed menace, then I doubt I'd have become such a fan. It was the group's dynamic (good or bad) which got me onboard in the first instance.
Take a look at Bernard & Hooky's collaborations away from New Order to see who's easy to work with and who's a mare. Not difficult to work out when you think about it.Yeah I bet that Johnny Marr's a right door mat. And therefore not difficult to understand why Steve & Gillian made the decision they made, unless you're seeing something in the Gillian-Hooky axis I'm missing.
We can long for them to have the same demeanour as in the 80s but not sure it's realistic. Them enjoying what they're doing means its more likely they're going to carry on. Compare that with the open war fare we witnessed in 2006 and it's a good position they're in now.

To be honest, I don't think it's that simple.
From previous interviews and sound bites, it seems evident that Gillian and Hooky don't get on particularly well. Hooky's recent interview quotes about her being a "poor musician" and "not really contributing that much" are all over the web. There's also that infamous "sexist pig" remark from a good few years back. Can't think why she wouldn't want to side with him?
So on the surface (and I'm not making any judgements, each to their own etc.) Hooky doesn't seem get on with either Bernard or Gillian = half the band.
I agree with you regarding Bernard's "happiness" though, sometimes musicians make their best work when they're pissed off. Alternatively though, lack of happiness can sometimes push them into not making any music for a long time.
But Bernard and Hooky not getting on is old hat isn't? I thought I saw that by 1987 they had separate dressing areas because they were grating on each other's nerves. Regardless, I think Hooky dug a ditch with his remarks about Gillian. I have always felt she added a necessary balance to the sound mix on the 80s albums (sans Movement). her work with Steve at the Other Two reveals true muscianship unless you are going to try and tell me Steve did everything...which I would not necessary doubt, but she understands music pretty good.
As a side note, I love the return of live keys to the live show -- especially on Regret which sounds so majestic with her keys in the middle. Same goes for the entire set, but when I heard the Troxy show - I picked that out in about 5 seconds as a "Wow this sounds so much better than 05."
Hooky speaks out in rare interview shock. I like Hooky. I like The Light. I also like showers with Melanie C while Cameron Diaz poohs on my face. But I think his comments here and elsewhere undermining The Other Two's contributions to the New Order cannon are more a reflection of his own shit-stirring tactics than the reality. For a start, pinpointing exactly how much an individual gives to a song is harder than my vicar's tackle during Grange Hill, which is why most artists don't bother - the classic example is Lennon-McCartney which was used as a kind of fits-all moniker, though it's obvious that (for example) Yesterday is a Paul track, Give Peace a Chance a John track. Plus I've read Procession was mainly Steve's... World in Motion was mainly Gillian's on the basis of her and Steve's Reportage theme (Bernard, 'This may be the way of the future')... Avalanche is The Other Two, surely... And on all releases from 87 to 97 (I'm including the Rest Of and Video 586 'cause I'm a silly little arse) Hooky is the least present, but this is probably more to do with poptastic limpwristed producers than his initial contribution. (The obvious case is Hague on Republic... In '92 Hook said the new album would be rockier anbd in 93 he told a guitar mag he liked to feed a bassline into the equipment then play over it, but Hague hadn't used his overtracking on songs like World.) Anyway I've heard that many people use the Internet and there isn't much on it. So if Melanie C is reading this, please PM me for further information. This also applies to Cameron Diaz.
