Think that is the long version of 'Touched By The Hand Of Dub' that was on the 'Salvation!' Soundtrack CD.

i've only found it on this japanese cd of 'salvation':

http://www.discogs.com/Various-Salvation-Original-Soundtrack/release/886400

there are 3 sellers from japan that have it.

Thanks everybody ! Apparently it's also featured on the German CD Version, too ! Never seen it though, I only had the vinyl... Nice longer alternative to the common 12" Mix anyway, funny I didn't know of it's existence for solid 28 years ;)

Question not just for neagtive one but for any one (see what I did there?).

I have a radio rip of the Lee Combs remix of Crystal. It's not the standard (CD single) Coombs remix and it's not quite the BOC mix either. It's also not Coombs' dub mix; it has Dawn Zee's "Keep it coming" vocals (higher in the mix than BOC I reckon) in addition to Bernard's lead vocal. Like the BOC mix it doesn't have the piano break in the middle/second half, though it does tease a smidgen of that piano early in the track. It's part of a DJ mix. I reckon if you knock off the mixing-in and -out at both ends it's roughly 7.30 in length.

Did this have a different mix name? Did it ever appear anywhere other than Coombs DJ mix?

Regards

Wannabe-Nerdy-Debaser.

*EDIT* according to this BBC page it was called Crystal (Lee's New mix) and was apparently played on 10th January 2003. It's too long after the original release to have been officially released. I guess it's just a case of whether it leaked anywhere.

regret (sabres fast 'n' throb) 12:11 v, cd

Looks like there is a longer version of 'sabres fast n throb': https://www.discogs.com/NewOrder-Regret/release/175455

from comments:

I thought I'd mention that this double pack is worth getting because the Fast 'N' Throb version included on this promo is actually longer than on the commercial releases. Here on Discogs the mix is listed as being 12 minutes and 11 seconds, but it's actually 13 minutes and 40 seconds on this double pack promo

i had this promo, but never checked it.

so that would add another version: regret (sabres fast 'n' throb full) 13:40 v

I have the 2x12" that contains this. I had a note that this was extended but, as I no longer have a turntable, I have no method of listening to it to determine what bit is extended.

Talking of the 2x12", I actually won a copy of this with the NME (think it was them, rather than Melody Maker). One of the only times I've ever won anything and it happened to be New Order-related. Kind of cool. It just turned up in the post, months after I entered the competition; no explanation or previous notification that I had won. Alongside it, I also won a sampler CD (NOSAMP2), with flames on the cover, which had 3 tracks from 'Republic' plus 1 track from each of their first 4 albums (not sure why 'Technique' didn't get any love) https://www.discogs.com/NewOrder-A-NewOrder-Sampler/release/796620

the comment on discogs went on to say this:

At the end of the mix on the commercial release, you can hear the Regret melody come in as the remix begins to fade if you listen carefully. Unfortunately, the songs cuts out before the melody is given any room to breathe. On this promo, the melody carries out an additional 80 seconds or so, giving the end of the remix a much more colorful and satisfying conclusion.

-------------------thieves like us (instrumental 12") 6:57 v, cd, cs -------------------

well, the 'thieves likes us (instrumental 86 remix)' from the shellshock 12 inch is different mix from the murder b-side.

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Shellshock/release/76200

thieves like us (instrumental 86 remix) 6:39 v, cd

so that's added, here:

it differs after the 2m:30sec mark.

you can get the longer original version on the faulty deluxe editions, the 'fixed' editions have the shorter 86 mix.

thanks to the guys on steve hoffman forums for pointing this out.

This was not unknown. When we did Recycle in 2009, both the full-length and 7" edits of the '86 remix (the version used in the film Pretty In Pink) were included with Shellshock. There are 5 variants of Thieves:

Original (12" single A-side) 6:38 7" Promo Edit 3:57 Instrumental (Murder single B-side) 6:58 Instrumental '86 (Shellshock 12" B-side) 6:38 Instrumental '86 7" Edit (Shellshock 7" B-side) 4:25

Well well well, i'll be damned.I grabbed your fantastic Recycle project back then but i never noticed that this 12" version of the 1986 instrumental of Thieves Like Us was on there! Somehow i only ever saw the 1986 TLU instrumental 7" version in the folder. That is really strange. How did i go all those years without noticing/knowing about it? Maybe because i was never a big fan of Shellshock and so never looked that closely at the files in that particular folder.I probably glimpsed that the 7" TLU inst. 86 version is there and somehow missed that there is a longer version in there too. But on looking it up it is indeed in that Shellshock folder.

Had a listen just now and think i noticed some differences to the version on the b side of Murder but couldn't be sure as i haven't listened to the Murder b side version for years either. Will have to give it some closer listening. Many thanks!

Instrumental '86 7" Edit (Shellshock 7" B-side) 4:25

thanks, i'm looking back at your blog pages, and yes, i didn't record the times when you posted it.

that last edit is your version right, and from the notes, all the vinyl versions clock in at 3:58:

"Tracklisting:

  1. Shellshock
  2. Shellcock
  3. Thieves Like Us Instrumental '86
  4. Shellshock (7" Edit)
  5. Thieves Like Us Instrumental '86 (7" Edit)

1 and 2 sourced from Factory UK 45RPM 12" single FAC 143 3 sourced from A&M Canada 45RPM 12" single SP-12174 4 sourced from Factory UK 45RPM 7" single FAC 143 5 edited from 3

Notes from the restorer: I initially created the full-length Shellshock by taking the Substance edit and putting back the edited-out portions from vinyl, carefully EQing it to match. While most people couldn't hear where the edits were, one person claimed to, so for this version, it's all from vinyl. I was hesitant do to this, for there is a very faint bit of pre-echo audible at the intro... but oh well.

Annoyingly, the 7" version cannot be created from editing the other versions down. I say annoyingly because I spent a couple of hours working on it and was almost done, only to discover that there's a brief snippet at around the three-minute mark which isn't anywhere in the 12" or dub versions."

There's also an alternate version of the 12" mix. Have a listen to the "And it cuts your life like a broken knife" line at 5:29 on 'Substance' and the original 12", then compare it to the 'The Best Of' and 'Power, Corruption & Lies (Collector's Edition)' versions - there's an echo/repeat of "knife". Guess this was an alternate mixdown made at the time the original 12" was made, which accidentally got remastered erroneously for these release. nevertheless, it adds an additional version of the track to the list.

This rings a bell.At some point i've heard Thieves and the "broken knife (knife)" has registered as oh i never noticed the "knife" echo/repeat before but i had just put it down to my ears and mind hearing the "knife" twice, like i imagined it or something.

That's a bad vocal drop in rather than a completely different take. Rest of and the Collector's Edition used a source taken from the studio master rather than the fixed production master.

Your timings and formats are out for these mixes.

I assume the versions you refer to as "mix2" are the second attempt Barney had at his Renegade Mixes - identifiable by the "Hooky" bass riff about halfway through both versions (vocal and instrumental)? These versions appear on the digital and CD single releases and your timings are correct.

The original Renegade Mixes (without "Hooky") however, only appeared on the 12", and are both a little longer - each with slightly longer intros just before the first verse:

Renegade Mix: 6:33 Renegade Instrumental: 6:32

Timings are from my digitised vinyl grabs made with a Technics 1210 into my laptop.

Hope that's helpful.

thanks andy for clearing that up, i made a note of it when the differences were first noted, but haven't gone back to check it.

also, i left out the 2 ivan ivan edits of the perfect kiss:

missed the kiss of death edit at : 3:01 also.

7": UK 1985 (Factory FAC 123) 3:51 The Perfect Kiss (edit) 3:01 Kiss of Death (edit)

originally on the niagara.edu site those times were blank, so i always assumed they were the same as the other edits.

come to think of it, i don't know if i've ever transferred them over from vinyl.
