Since noboby enjoys the tracklisting of "Retro", and probably the name too, if you would have been chosen to be one of the selectors, what would have been YOUR pick...

Remember you have 4 damned CDs to create, 2 with tracks, one with remixes and one live disc..

Note that some things on this list are crap, I am aware of this, but those are the things I don't have on CD either.. I must have forgotten a lot of rare stuff, I made my list considering my bootleg "The Rarest of New Order", which was a audio & mp3 compilation done in 1998.

Not a lot wrong with this selection. I'd like to hear the Low-Life demo versions of Let's Go and Skullcrusher, as well as other out-takes from studio sessions.

While I understand that people are fascinated by the live anomalies, they are a bit of an embarassing product to release (though When I'm With You would hold up with the best) - it's very difficult to please anyone with a live disc. Do you just release one gig or make a compilation ? Barney was very concerned that the quality of peformance was right on the live tracks chosen - he apparently wanted a single gig, but I guess there were none that were not riddled with errors !

My biggest regret with the final decision they made is that it is such a wasted opportunity. It's almost as though they couldn't really be bothered to do it anymore, and have just tossed off a whole load of studio selections that we already have, passing the buck by getting other people to choose. Did Knobby Gillespie have access to a vast selection of live recordings, or did he only have a few bootlegs to choose from ? Seeing as they record every show and have mixer recordings, I'm surprised they asked leading bootleggers if they had good copies. There simply has to be better choices of live cut than the ones they have chosen - in fact, I shall now log off and make my own compilation of live tracks, using the exact same song listing but with mixer/soundboard/excellent audience recordings, and not once will I have to use any of the gigs they chose.

well, they could go three routes

collect a definitive solid "career best of" /nice packaged product for the more casual fans, future generations, collectors
concentrating on rare/unreleased stuff for the more harcore fans/historians
collected all the 7"/12" stuff on CD remastered, definitive collection of singles

well, they choose to do none of the three, in my opinion, which is what i find so odd.

i think it would be cool to get a "Best Of LIVE" - release. A recording of the best songs performed live on the "Get Ready" tour. A possible Tracklisting could be:

I would wager that any selection of tracks chosen by any selection of "famous fans" would have brought the same reaction from most members of this web-site. In fact, any box-set chosen by any of us would have brought similar lamentations and complaints. Perhaps the best way of all would have been for each of the band members to have nominated their favourites onto a disc each - but I guess we still would not have been happy....

Can't agree with that Phil - we're all a bit more in touch with what we wanted to hear than they are !

i agree with benny about bobby gillespie choosing the live tracks. i mean: :scratch: ? at least if the band couldn't choose them, someone like arthur baker could have.

other than that, nic's list sounds pretty good to me. although i'd also like to see a disc (or part of one) with studio sessions and commentary blended together: kind of a walk-through. i have a blur CD like this, and it actually gives you quite a decent idea about what the band's mindset is when they're in the studio.

How about tracking down some important figures from New Order's past and getting them to contribute selections for a box set?

you could have: Tony Wilson Peter Saville Rebecca Boulton Arthur Baker Alan Erasmus

etc.

P.s. if the celebs for the Retro Box set should have been: Bono Neil Tennant Billy Corgan etc.

I am not sold on the necessity of a remix disc, honestly. I would think a box set featuring choice tracks off their LPs (not the entire album, however)as well as singles, b-sides, and rare stuff would be plenty to fill three discs, with one left over for the obligatory live disc. I tell you what, I will try and compile a list of what I would have expected to be on the box (my live disc will be a bit dodgy, but otherwise..) by Tuesday at least, after my Bio test monday (more free time to do this then).

the point is that if we cant agree on what tracks should go on this boxset, nor even agree on who it is being aimed at, then the record company have a catch 22 situation. I take the point that some people feel that the band are out of touch with some of us and what we want to hear (although I don't agree - or else we wouldn't be particularly interested in any new material)but surely the final say has to come from some-one as the collective disagreements would go on forever

Yeah - quite right - stuff the rubbish pointless remixes (well - the majority of them since 1993 onwards, cos that's where they started to go seriously downhill).

There's enough obscure/unreleased stuff there to fill those first 3 CDs.

Er, I believe Alex and John helped decide which bootlegs should be used.. .

Why would a band ever want to release 'demos'? You work hard to produce an end product, then someone says, "Nope, can we have the version you'd come up with after working on this thing for an hour only, please?" I think not.

As for the BBC stuff - do New Order actually have the rights to release this? Surely it's just a matter of time before the Beeb themselves release said versions?

first of all. can´t stand remixes on a box set simply because they´re not new order tracks "per se", so this is pointless. we could like or not remixes, that´s not the point. we should focus on what´s a band´s box set all about.

I agreed with the live album but I must say that someone could have pick up other tracks than the same ones on discs 1 and 2. I think repeating songs, even if they´re different versions, is stupid. 3 versions of regret and crystal? what for? there´re "non-hits" songs that sound very well live like sunrise or paradise or vanishing point (where is it?)... you can put whatever you want but don´t repeat a song that you´ve already chose.

I think disc 1 is not bad, you have to put those tracks except slow jam, everyone everywhere and brutal. and instead of PKiss´ album version I´d put 12" but the concept of choosing hits I think it´s all right. it´s understandable.

I think disc 2 should bring all the fans were waiting for. cries&whispers and elegia (we wanted the 20 min version) are the only ones that fit into that need. you could put brutal in here. all b-sides would have been an alternative. definetely rare tracks.

the third would be the live disc.

and the fourth could include demo versions or rare versions of all the tracks that couldn´t fit in disc 1. could be subculture, vanishing point, state of the nation or whatever you like. but not made by another person as a remix. another version FROM new order.

if you do all this you could forget about international because you´d have all the hits in there. then you could get to ocasional new order fans like someone said (I don´t think ocasional fans buy box sets). and all "extreem fans" would be happy as well. everybody happy!
