well... how about remastered albums... with bonus tracks... 5 seperate sold CDs, Movement to Technique... there would be plenty of room on the discs for extras, 12" versions, B-sides...

well, i can daydream...

nah, i'm sick of recycled new order product. really. :nonono:

i wish that new order were as prolific in their output of music as sonic youth. common! sonic youth has been around as long as new order, and they've got over 15 records under their belt...new order with a measly 8.

re-mastered albums??? Let's do the math here: computer+ CDR + a little time on your hands x a pack of smokes = A Brand Spankin' Newly Remastered New Order CD!

Have a nice day. :nonono:

you can remaster the old CDs, and vinyl to .wav to CD-r, and make it sound better? i can't do that. anybody can burn their own CDr mix disc, i didn't think that was the issue. i thought remaster meant the digital transfer was cleaner and all that stuff.

might as well just burn 128 mp3s made on dodgy soundcards onto CD, who cares if it sounds shitty, its free! yippee! why even worry about a box set then!

geezus, no pleasing people. i thought people wanted better sounding stuff and rare stuff as a bonus. guess not.

and as for production... Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Movement, Power+ Lies, Low-life, Brotherhood, Technique, Republic, Get ready =9... plus if you figure the three Electronic albums, thats like 12 for Barney... plus also factor in that most music groups suck after 15 years, Get Ready is more like a bonus...

Exactly.....the only difference i can hear on remastered stuff is the VOLUME change.I know i can't hear aswell as i used to but i still think this is a joke.Got ELECTRONIC(RED COVER) the remastered BLACK cover. Apart from the extra track on the BRITISH BLACK one it sounds almost the same.Cheers FINGERS i thought i was going MAD!:D

The best remastered cds (Pet Sounds in mono and stereo, The Who's entire back catalog, etc) always have something extra to offer. I seriously wonder if there's some unheard gem that hasn't circulated before which could pop up on a NO remastered cd. I would like a redone Substance with the original Temptation and Confusion in place of the ones on there, but I don't see that happening

Recently got THE WHO LIVE at LEEDS and WHOS NEXT together with PET SOUNDS.Better than the original LPs i have but despite the booklet and added tracks on WHOS NEXT the difference between that and one on original CD alone would probably not be much different. The difference between the LPs though and the remastered is VAST especially if STELLA is spilt onto both formats.:D

Was the WHO'S NEXT from '96? I have that one (I think the added 6 songs to the original 8 for 14 total), it's pretty good. I never got the original album on CD, so I dunno if I missed anything.

I think the Who's rereleases have set a high-water mark for me, in terms of the fact that the booklets are informative, the added songs usually contribute to the original LP rather than distract (such is the case with THE WHO SELL OUT, quite possibly my favorite of the rereleases). If New Order were to follow suit and issue redone LPs with bonus tracks that add to the LP, I would buy 'em. I just have to wonder if there are such songs out there previously missing which would add to the existing LPs

Okay, I admit I was being sarcastic and some remasters do improve other aspects of previous CD releases other than the volume. However, some record companies have treated the advent of the CD and the ability to remaster old albums as an opportunity to get fans to buy the same product again and again and again.

I may be wrong but I suspect the recent remastered "The Very Best Of The Eagles" CD in a green cover had the same tracks as the earlier album of the same name with a brown cover that sold by the lorry load but so many people bought the new one that the album got into the Top Ten album chart. I didn't bother buying either of the new Beach Boys compilations because I've already got an earlier compilation. Remastered versions of The Rolling Stones' early albums in special sleeves have been released this month but remastered versions were released in special sleeves some time in the 1990's. Roughly two decades into the CD era most of the material that needed to be remastered has been remastered but record companies want to maintain their level of income so in the last few years they have taken to releasing "new" compilations that are very similar to previous compilations in a desperate attempt to maintain sales or putting out box sets of previously unreleased versions of familiar tracks.

There's a difference between ensuring that musical works are available in a form as close as possible to the original and trying to milk loyal fans and there's a difference between making previously unreleased or hard-to-find material widely available and trying to milk loyal fans. On previous form which do you expect New Order's record company to do? Remastered versions of the band's albums with extra tracks which have either never been released on CD or are no longer available would be tempting but a decent rarities box set would be better.

You got a point. The minute I saw ads for the Rolling Stones' "Forty Licks", I said to myself "At last! A compilation for all those fans who don't have Hot Rocks, More Hot Rocks, The London Years, Best of volume 1, best of Volume 2.........."

I know the years on just about every Who album released, as with a lot of other artists I follow. I'm anal about it, I guess.

Have you picked up the remastered "My Generation" set yet, Mick? Highly recommend it, though My Generation, Kids Are Alright, and A Legal Matter sound different mono (Entwistle's bass in emphasized at the cost of everything else). Good set, and funny that it took this long to get their first LP in remastered condition. Finally, Shel Talmy did the right thing...

It's mostly older recordings that benefit a lot from remastering, New Order records are already pretty good sounding as it is by today's standards, the only possible candidate for remastering to me is Movement. I think they could make that one sound considerably better without compromising the music, if they did it right.

I think you're right. Most music recorded in the 1990's doesn't need remastering because it was recorded using high quality equipment and the original CD release was of high quality. The only major 1990's albums that needed remastering that I can think of are De La Soul's "3 Feet High And Rising" (which was remastered and re-released earlier this year) and Manic Street Preachers' "Generation Terrorists" (which I suspect will be remastered at some point but maybe not until the band split or leave Sony). There are more 1980's albums that needed remastering but I suspect most of the ones that fans would buy have been remastered by now. New Order are probably one of the biggest bands whose back catalogue record companies would like to remaster and re-release but don't think the fans would buy if they did (the others that spring to mind being The Smiths and The Cure).

And let us not forget - they did the very same just a few weeks ago with MARC BOLAN as well - The Very Best Of Marc Bolan was first issued in 1999 / 2000 (?). Originally with a gold sleeve/booklet, it was reissued to coincide with the 25th anniversary of his death in a SILVER bookleted sleeve and slightly different portrait cover - but with virtually the same track listing bar one track (albeit in a different running order). Now is this new version the remastered edition of the previous "remastered" edition??

This kind of thing happens all the time. We shouldn't be too surprised...

On the same subject there WAS however, an excellent - and far more comprehensive - 4-CD retrospective of Marc Bolan's output - titled "the best of the 20th century warrior" (or something) which was issued around the same time - retailing for around £36 in HMV - nice hardback extended CD casing (like "Heart & Soul").

In recent years the British music industry has released so many compilations the primary purpose of which is to squeeze as much money out of loyal fans as possible we could fill a thread with them. I'm looking at a list of forthcoming albums which is only a week out of date and on it there are "new" best of/greatest hits albums by Everything But The Girl, Madness (their third), Blondie (I've lost count of how many they've released), The Who, Stevie Wonder (at least his third and his second since he last released any new material that was any good), David Bowie (is it his fifth?) and Kylie Minogue plus the various Rolling Stones compilations in the latest series of remastered releases (and I nearly forgot about New Order's "International" or whatever it's called now). Add on the compilations by acts who haven't been around for long, the remastered versions of old albums and the repackaged versions of albums released a few months ago with new remixes or CD-ROM videos and you've got walls of record shops half full of "new" albums that many people don't want because they've got a very similar album already.

I don't spend as long as I used to in record shops because over the years I've bought most of what I want and now I'm only looking for a few things I haven't been able to find or new music. If the record companies want more of my money they need to either release the old music that I haven't been able to find in a form that I think is good value for money (such as a New Order box set that doesn't contain lots of tracks I've already got on CD) or release more new music that will appeal to me. They're not going to get much money out of me by trying to sell me something I've already got.

Perhaps a remastered Brotherhood might help the dismal sound.

Hang on....

All their albums have been remastered by Centredate onto CD have they not..?

I wouldn't even call them "remasters" cos when you look at the case of "Movement", there is a couple of seconds chopped off at the very start of "Senses" which the re-issued Centredate CD version still didn't manage to correct.

So no. They weren't. In the slightest.

Nah....none of the albums issued by Centredate has been remastered.... I will definitely pay to get my hands on remastered stuff...The sound is always improved in terms of clarity...stereo separation, etc.... I'm really hanging out for New Order to remaster their stuff, especially Brotherhood...also, waiting for The Smiths to do the same.... I'm a real sucker for remastered stuffs...recently bought all the PSB 2-discs ones ( excellent idea ), Nick Drake, Talk Talk and Cold Chisel ( top Aussie band!! )
