Watched Candyman (2021) recently. Scene where a girl randomly says Joy Division song titles , She's Lost Control, Atrocity Exhibition, LWTUA ... until finally her boyfriend angrily snaps back " ok , you like Joy Division, i get it!".
Saw 28 Years Later at cinema yesterday. Kind of NO related that in one scene Wagner's Rheingold:Vorspiel plays. Turns out it's actually a cover by Young Fathers, they did the music for the film. I'm not sure it really fitted the scene ( infected guy chasing people) though.
Pitchfork's social media decided to throw The 200 Best Albums of the 1980s at me today, altbough I've just realised the article is originally from 2018. NO and JD make appearances. As you might expect from a US "alternative" publication, artists like Husker Du, Pixies, Talking Heads and Sonic Youth all pop up - which is fine by me, after all my forum name is a Pixies song title. It also has artists like Salt n' Pepa, Ice T, Run DMC and Eric B & Rakim. But who decided to put Madonna's debut LP at No 16? It's not even Madonna's best album, never mind something worthy of an "all time" top 20 list. Janet Jackson's Control at No 8 is also a surprise. I guess they allowed commercial success to influence their rankings.

Did she snap back "I refuse to come back as a bug or a rabbit"? I watched the original Candyman back in the early '90s. Do I need to watch another one, or can I stick to the original, like with Blue Monday?

Do not waste your time watching the 2021 remake of Candyman. It's rubbish. The original is still way the best.
I too watched 28 Days Later back in 2002. Great film. I did really like its 2007 sequel too. Really rate that one. This new one though is, well it's not a bad film but it just didn't have me on the edge of my seat at any time like the first 2 did. A bit dull. And some directorial choices were odd and didn't work. And there's even some bad editing. Ok, maybe it is a bad film actually. So i'd reccomend watching the 2007 sequel but don't waste your time with the latest one.

Each episode has a different guest vinyl digger, rummaging their way through John Peel's mammoth record collection. Damon from Blur, Nish Kumar, actor Johny Flynn and Fatboy Slim are just some of the guests. Fatboy is great and reminds us that he did a couple of Peel Sessions when he was in the Housemartins. He was clearly a big Peel fan and digs out a cartridge tape from under the foorboards with Peel's opening theme music on it!
Anyway German electronic DJ & producer Helena Hauff did one in September here. At 42:11 she finds a stack of JD Flexi-discs which she calls floppy discs. "It looks like 20 of them". From the description and the blurb that they read out, it's clearly Komakino (+ Incubation & As You Said). At first, they think it may be very rare. Looking at the Discogs listing, the reviews/comments underneath are quite fun. Here's one: "I was told that Factory used to post these out stapled to letterheads. Right through the grooves, just for giggles."
Crazy to think they gave these away for free just because the tracks didn't make it on to Closer. Of course if you want one now, they're not free on Discogs!
At 53:38 Hauff and Ravenscroft come back to the JD Flexi. Ravenscroft says : "you can only play these a few times, then the sound disappears". Is that true? I guess the grooves and material are pretty flimsy. Anyone know how many plays you can get from a Flexi? Anyway, they eventually play Komakino on 54 mins, and I reckon it sounds alright!. They then realise: 75,000 copies were pressed, so it wasn't as rare as they first thought.
If you liked John Peel, then these shows are worth a listen.
Re: the above. In some of the Peel Acres visit shows, Tom Ravenscroft said he wasn't quite sure what they were going to do with all those records at Peel Acres. John Peel's death was unexpected and he hadn't made any plans. Looks like Omega Auctions (previously used by Hooky) are involved with a John Peel Collection auction now.
There are 429 lots spread over 9 web pages. Surely only a fraction of the tens of thousands (or hundreds of thousands?) of items in Peel's collection. If we jump to page 9 HERE lots 399 to lot 402 are potentially interesting handbills/posters. Lot 403 is JOY DIVISION - JOHN'S COPY OF THE 'IDEAL FOR LIVING' 12" WITH LETTER FROM ROB GRETTON (I've copy/pasted, hence the CAPITALS). And Lot 404 is some WIM T-shirts.
Jumping back to Page 6, we have Lot 247: JOY DIVISION - ATMOSPHERE 7" (FAC213/7 - WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING) .
And jumping to Page 2 we have Lot 74: NEW ORDER - THE GATEFOLD SUBSTANCE LP (LIMITED EDITION W/ PRESS RELEASE - FACT 200). Although I did buy Substance on vinyl back in '87, I'm not sure how many of the 1000 gatefold copies made it to Ireland, where I bought mine. So I was in fact, today years old when I realised that the gatefold image = the True Faith remix 12" image. Or maybe I knew and I forgot...
EDIT: See also Lot 17 on page 1: JOY DIVISION - 7" PACK (INC RARITIES). A quality pack of 6 7" singles by Manchester post-punk legends Joy Division. Titles include Love Will Tear Us Apart (S-590, Polish pressing), Komakino/ Incubation (FAC 28/ Reject, 7" flexi discs), Love Will Tear Us Apart (FAC 23, promo with press release), Atmosphere (FAC 213, white label test pressing with press release) and Transmission (Fac 13).
Anyway, if you have more money than sense, have fun bidding on these. I'm guessing there may be more to come at some point.
BBC 6 Music's Chris Hawkins does a half hour show called The Remix which gets broadcast at 5am (or 5.30?) on a Friday morning, but it's also available to stream/download on the BBC Sounds app & website. Last Friday's episode was a "Manchester Special" featuring remixes of Ian Brown, 808 State, The Smiths (not really a remix), New Order and JD. CLICK. The NO and JD remixes are both unofficial and I imagine the JD remix in particular will annoy JD purists. The NO remix is perhaps more of a re-edit and re-eq, but that's ok because it means it isn't ruined. Bit short though. That's probably the best 'treatment' of Blue Monday I've heard for many a year. (With a due nod to Orkestra Obsolete.)
I'm not annoyed, nor a purist but I'm not sure why anyone should *want* to mess with LWTUA - it's just completely perfect. I think Hanky Park did it justice with their pretty faithful cover but other than that, I'll always pass.

Following on from the above, more BM remix/re-edit spotting.
From CamelPhat's DJ set at this year's Glastonbury. They've made it sound quite 'big' I think, although also a little murky/filtered - like if Phil Spector were doing remixes in 2025 (!).
Probably not as good as the Louis La Roche thing, but worth one listen anyway. Jump to 1hr51 here. Oh and it's not actually BM'88 despite what the tracklist says.

Bizarre Love Triangle ( Brotherhood album version) very early on in 1st episode of MixTape on BBC2 and iplayer last week. Also at the end of i think episode 3 is Frente's cover of the song.
4 episode tv series version of apparently the book of same name i haven't read.
I kinda liked the series as long as i could get past the rather odd thing of someone in their 50s and long married still in a mardy about a girl who deserted him 30-40 years ago. But it is quite heartbreaking and nostalgic , yes. The girl who plays the younger, 1989 Alison Connor was fantastic. I'd have certainly fallen in love with her in 1989.Some Candy Talking by Jesus & Mary Chain was rather lovely at the end of episode 1, too."MixTape" , though? Pretty sure we never called them that back in the 80s. We just used to say " I'll do a tape for yer"
In Adam Curtis' latest series Shifty on BBC iPlayer, brief clip in episode 3 of Temptation live on Riverside tv show in 1982. Shifty is Curtis' disection of how Britain changed in late 20th Century, how politics, economics, financial systems and society changed, a lot of because of the decisions of Margaret Thatcher. A lot of it was a bit too intellectual for me but i find interesting all the old footage from 1980s that Adam Curtis uses. Interesting how he finds and uses old footage from the era to build something, a story. Have watched all of his previous series.Also, in episode 1, brief use of She's Lost Control from Something Else.
