As long as they are working on a new album, it's up to them to release item we don't need if they want.
Still, I just don't get why they stopped promoting Get Ready so soon, why the US promotion stopped suddenly, maybe because New Order didn't want to come back to do concerts or something...! I still can't believe they didn't release Turn My Way in the US, this was a natural hit for that market...
Well, let's face it, they are making music to enjoy themselves, touring in known places they like, they don't care if it does well or not, they have their fans, and don't need to get new fans.. they don't bother with the promotional work, hence they don't even bother showing up in their own videos since the World video! (And it's almost like they didn't in this one!)
Since 1993, it's been recycling after another.. Best of, Rest of, True Faith 94, Nineteen 63, Blue Monday 95, Love Will Tear Us Apart 95, True Faith 2001, finally some new material, then it goes back into the vicious circle of trying to generate money without anything new...
Is there any other band who has more compilations & reissues than actual albums, that are still ACTIVE ?
well, any band that has more than three records under their belt, should have at least one best of in their career. for the casual fans who don't wanna shell out a whole lot on a band. box sets and rarities are for the fans. but anything beyond one of each (box set, rarities and best of) really waters down the quality of the over all catelogue of a band. an exception is if the band has an ultra long career (ie. 20+ years)...then that would be ok.
but come on! three or four best ofs and a substandard boxset for new order is really pushing it. what's probably missing is a REAL new order rarities cd...not just remixes and rehashes from out of print stuff, but real rarities. but maybe that doesn't exist since we always complain that they're such lazy bastards when it came to writing music. who knows.

I have a theory about the poor reception given to Crystal and, subsequently, Get Ready in the US. Although chillingly appropriate for it's time (circa September 11, 2001), the refrain "We're like crystal, we break easy" isn't something that most Americans wanted to sing along to. I recall at the time there were reports of radio playlists being altered to weed out songs that could be deemed insensitive.
It's unfortunate that this is probably what happened, but the US radio industry, although influential, has been shitty for years.

Not a bad theory, but I think there's more to it: Since New Order 'split' in 1993-94, the music scene has passed them by in some ways. It happens with all artists who take a long enough time off, I remember the hype surrounding Nine Inch Nails when they finally released their double album and then how poorly it did overall. Given that NO have rarely had a public profile, bar the exposure they got after True Faith, it would be considerably harder for them to come back and match or even surpass the "street cred" they might have had. I think their low profile during the latter half of the decade, when Kurt was repalced by Britney, has hurt their efforts since they reemerged, but I doubt they themselves are much concerned about it.
