why not take the bull by the horns and simply put together our own compilation of rare tracks? it has been done countless times to smashing success on mailing lists and various webboards (swervedriver, boo radleys, etc etc) i think its a good idea...anyone else with me?
instead of all the complaining...

Who ever said Retro was supposed to be a 'compilation of rare tracks'?
Which I presume is the point of your post??
Is the key hidden in Pingu's first post? ... most (all?) of 'us' have already created rare compilations over the years, presumably. The real 'rare' material is yet to surface, which is seemingly the hub of all current 'Retro' complaints.
Al, you are quite correct, no press release ever stated 'this box set will be full of quality rare material nobody has ever heard', it was just what many had hoped for, including me. After, now, so many NO 'best of's' this box set falls a little short on its promise. Who can deny a box set coming after so many 'best of's' shouldn't herald a wealth of as yet unheard recordings coupled with sporadic yet quality general releases.
Al, you seem to defend 'Retro', are you not disappointed a little? ... perhaps because it should have been entitled 'Re-hash'.

just because its my first post doesnt mean i am new to no by any stretch, just new to here. the idea was born to make this thread after seeing a few people mention it in various posts, and this was meant to be a centralized effort. sure,we have all done our own comps, but it certainly couldnt hurt to do another, if you aren't interested surely no one would twist any arms :)
Pingu, you mistake my message. In short, most people who appear on this website already have 99% of all NO material, so a collaboration to forge 1 is not entirely worthwhile, as you will only receive what you already have. Just my view.
However, through your post you have highlighted that the proper 'rare' stuff is not in existence because NO haven't released it.
They must be deducted 3 points for this move.

I think a Barnyism is quite appropriate here...
SO WHATS THE USE IN COMPLAINING, WHEN YOU GOT EVERYTHING YOU NEED, ANYONE WOULD THINK YOU WERE HARD DONE TOO....
;)
Not necessarily defending Retro/IV/whatever, but I fail to understand what people actually expected from this? And why so much hot air and white noize has been bandied around this newgroup this past week.
I understand that we each have different tastes, and whilst me may all support the Order, we all take something unique from the group. What 'Face Up' means to me, may well be encaptured by 'Shellcock' in someone else.
Do people really think that there's unreleased material out there that we've never heard, or that the band would be prepared to release demo versions of tracks?
As for the live stuff - would you really release 'Love Juice' if you were trying to promote a product? Would you f---.
And I doubt they've any rights whatsoever over the Lamacq and Peel stuff, so I'm not sure why people keep hankering on about them. They'll doubtless appear on a BBC release some time in the distal future.
I could go Round & Round on this all day. It's another New Order product, it's another slice of promotion pie for the boys and whether it sells, or doesn't, or whether my nearest or dearest love it, or loathe it, it won't sway my opinion of the article one iota. Which is, simply, that it's okay. I can't think of a single track I don't own in some shape or form so what on earth was this boxset supposed to offer me - and 99% of people here - in the first instance anyways?
I don't know what it is, but I just can't get excited about this box set... maybe its my instincts telling me its just another rip off...
I'm still in shock that they're actually releasing a box set! I expected what's currently being listed in the tin, so I'm not surprised, thus I haven't mentioned too much about it - there is no comment. My personal disappointment is with the outtakes, which, as you say Al, is only a variation of taste. You probably would like more live stuff (just an example) ... I'm more interested in studio work. Agreed. I do, however, think they 'must' have plenty of decent material they could tweak and include on a 'rare' disc but again am not surprised by the non-inclusion. (too much hard graft).
Another release with their more commercial and accepted best hits, not my choice, but not surprising if they want to sell to people other than us.
Same songs, different day.

Huntsy, I never thought that one day i'd agree with you on something, and guess what? This is THAT day!
