I thought of my own box set taking into consideration that retro has about 15 songs per CD.

CD1 (rares)Cries & WhispersThe Happy OneLet´s Go first version Elegia 17minutes version BrutalSkullcrusherSalvationSputnikDNeverEnd (peel sessions1) Turn the heater on (peel sessions2) 586 (peel sessions2) Too late (peel sessions2) We all stand (peel sessions2) and I´d add 2 songs from the peel sessions 98.

CD 2 (live)Age of ConsentSunriseParadiseIn a Lonely PlaceYour Silent FaceProcessionEGGreenClose RangeSubCultureShellshockMurderLove VigilantesHomageSolitudeWeirdoCD 3 (hits) all full versions Blue MondayTemptation82BLTRegretRound&RoundPKissTFaithWIMotionCrystalFine TimeTBTHOGodWorldCeremony without Gillian TLUsConfusion 7 min. version

CD 4 (b sides)Don´t Do It1963Behind Close DoorsPlayer in the LeagueSabotageMTOMeshHurtLonesome TonightBest&MarshSuch A Good Thing plus a couple of demos or unedited versions of Subculture or Vanishing Point or whatever and then I´d put two new songs (Here To Stay and another one)

as you see there´s no need to repeat songs. and despite we could disagree with a couple of them I put 60 new order songs so I think anyone could be interested in this box set. what do you think?

It's already closer to what I would call the ideal box set, yet some rare tracks are still missing (Haystack, Ode to Joy, Rocking Carol, video586, just to mention a few).

Much better selection than all their mates chose, with one slight logistical problem. They've never played Murder live.

rocking carol and ode to joy are not NO songs and their musical quality is poor, that´s why I didn´t include them. video 586 could fit only if we take out 586 of the peel session (no repetitions, remember?). and I missed Haystack because didn´t know it : ) Like I said before, there might be discussions about a couple of songs. But you´d buy it happly, wouldn´t you?

I like the what's on the play list! Where can we get it?

I love their first album the best! I love the way Barney tried to sound like Ian. :D

I wouldn't call 586 and Video 586 repeats, but anyway, I very much like your track listing. If only...

I have a track listing worked up for what I would've liked, but of course I left it at home! Nonetheless, I will try and post it in a few days. Good selection, though! :thumb:

Ode to Joy and Rocking Carol? Give me a break. I have the tracks, and they are interesting, but they sound like crap and are so annoying that no one would actually listen to them more than once... and probably fast forwarding the first time. I would NEVER want tracks like that put on a box set ever! Maybe if there was a 5th disk called "wierd stuff that sounds like crap and is basically boring, annoying, or lame" then maybe.

Do we REALLY need Video 586?

anyone actually listened to the WHOLE thing?

Haytack, Theme and Homage are songs I forgot on my own tracklist.

I was going to go off on him about including video586 too, but I was so opposed to RC and O2J that I had to focus on those two first. I totally agree though - NO VIDEO586. Homage would be good, also Theme would be good. WHat about the instrumental tracks from the Palatine CD?

everything extra you´d want to put it´s alright. you could change songs for others you like more. but, defenitely any tracklisting would be better thatn the real retro box set. that´s what I wanted to prove. with a little more effort you could do so much better than what it´s been done. if only someone listen to the fans once in a while everyone would be happier... it would be a better business for them too, don´t you think? because more people would buy the box set. and selling 10000 less box sets is equal to lose sales by 40000 CDs. mind!

Vicious Circle? What is that a b-side to? I have the mp3, but didn't think it was actually New Order...

Vicious Circle B-side to "Ruined in a Day"

sounds like some vague playing around, some of it actually sounds sort of Monaco-ish in retrospect, that never really turned into songs on Republic, prolly when Barney was AWOL pumped full of drugs, like "Best & Marsh" from the Round & Round single from technique sessions. neither is terribly essential. but hey, why not.

Fair play to Alejo for taking the time and effort:nod:

It's not bad mate.....if I could be bothered I'd do a box set wish list as well....but I'm a wee bit lazy;) I'd definitely have Lamacq sessions on there though.....and definitely not the number 1 hit they had over here:D

I actually have ALL these tracks from the NON-LIVE stuff in original format perhaps for one or two.As for the LIVE stuff i am sure i have them but NOT MURDER.A decent little set list and if there is any of these i could LOAN(sic)you, owning the original, thus NOT breaking ANY copyright ,then feel free to contact me at PLANET ROCKET and it will make a nice XMAS gift for you.Could do one for your AUNTIE aswell.:D (only joking as this would be 2 copies!)
400 plus ORIGINALS and PROMOS and counting...bet SHUGZV,HANK and HOOKY'S WALLET have stole some recently.

So, bar the live stuff, we've nothing there that wasn't previously commercially available?

Oh, bar the 'Demos' of course - Let's Go and the Happy One were never completed to a standard the band were happy with (if they refused to release them in 85 and 89 - why would they release them now?) and Elegia was a piece of self-congratulating w*nk so they soon cut it down to the user-friendly version we all know and love today.

As Hacienda said, the 'real' box set will be put out once the band have finally called it a day and have absolutely no rights over what is released and the record company are scraping around for out-takes of Barney burping and Hooky farting, out-takes of absolutely anything they can get hold of that the general public have never heard before.

'Homage' has been mentioned but what about the rest of the Western Works Demos - Different singers on familiar tracks, surely of some historical interest (and my only copy on tape is well worn out by now!). What about the other Kevin Hewick track that was supposed to have been (partly?) recorded at the Haystack session. My own take on the box set is a that it's a huge wasted opportunity, Miranda Sawyer is no big New Order fan as anyone who read her Japanese tour article in the Observer will testify - riddled with errors (but I Would.... if you know what I mean!).

As a longtime fan, I think the ideal box set would have only non-album tracks. Substance made perfect sense at the time of it's release due to it containing songs (or versions of songs) that were unavailable on the regular album releases. It also made sense from a commercial standpoint because it didn't lessen the value of the original albums but complimented them.

A casual fan will buy International, not Retro, so why have a disc in the box dedicated to "hits"? I will gladly pay the $ for discs 3 & 4 of Retro but it seems like this is huge opportunity missed.

I agree with you on that one. I don´t think a casual fan is buying retro. what for? they got international already. but it seems quite a lot of fans here thought about putting a hits CD on retro in order to get all those casual fans, so that´s why I put it. but I don´t agree with this. maybe we could put rare versions of those hits and everybody happy. :thumb:
