Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers

I never went to the Peter Saville Exhibition. Something I have always regretted, although I imagine I was (or am now) already familiar with most of the stuff on display. Well here's another chance to see (something by) Saville at the same exhibition space.

The Design Museum is set to host a new electronic music exhibition called Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers

"Travel to dance floors from Detroit to Chicago, Paris, Berlin and the UK’s thriving scene; featuring over 400 objects and the likes of Detroit techno legend Jeff Mills, Haçienda designer Ben Kelly and the extreme visual world created by Weirdcore for Aphex Twin’s ‘Collapse’. Discover early pioneers like Daphne Oram and the seminal BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Indulge your senses with large scale images of rave culture by Andreas Gursky, iconic DJ masks and fashion, a genre-spanning soundtrack by French DJ and producer Laurent Garnier, graphics from Peter Saville CBE and history-making labels and club nights.

However, I suspect it might actually be the immersive 3D stuff from Kraftwerk and The Chems that's the most interesting:

"Celebrate 50 years of legendary group Kraftwerk with a half-hour long 3D show. Step into the visual world of The Chemical Brothers for one of their legendary live shows, as visuals and lights interact to create a new three-dimensional experience by Smith & Lyall – featuring Grammy Award-winning track 'Got to Keep On'."

I did go to the Peter Saville Exhibition at The Design Museum waaaay back in summer 2003.God it seems a lifetime ago now.I think at the time it felt like the first time there'd been a Saville or Factory or New Order exhibition and so made the effort to go.Nowadays it seems there's a new one every month.Can't remember much about it really except for Soundtrack on repeat as i walked round looking at the Saville sleeves inside glass boxes.It was lovely to experience though and a great day out down to London on a summer's day.Vaguely recall there was a miniature model of the picture on the Thieves Like Us sleeve.Or did i dream that? I'd always thought the Thieves sleeve was a painting by Saville but i'm sure there was a model of what is pictured on the sleeve.Like a model was made and then photographed and later tweaked to make it look like a painting. Maybe.

OK thought there was an entire exhibition on Electronic the band. A bit embarrassed now.

Unlikely, given that they've made a grand total of three albums in 30 years and one was shit.

I'm visiting this exhibition tomorrow (Monday 5th Oct) Looking forward to it.

The later on am going to the National Gallery.A rare day out and experiencing a bit of culture.

Yep, i just discovered last night that it moved in 2016.Used to be near London City Hall by the Thames but is now near Kensington Gardens. Nearest tube stations are Kensington High Street or Earls Court.

A pretty good day out but we felt like we'd only skimmed the exhibition.They encourage you to get through it all in 1 and 1/2 hours but there's no way you can absorb it all in that time.You need at least a whole afternoon to take all the stuff in.

Afterwards in the shop, i could have broke the bank and bought countless books, vinyl and god know what else but in the end i just spent £8 on a turntable mat.

Caught this video at the exhibition and liked it.Quotes on screen from old ex ravers, reminiscing .Kind of a paradise lost vibe.Recognised the track as something i've heard and liked this year and apparently it's Glue by BICEP.

There's a twitter account called "UK Rave YouTube Comments" which tweets out genuine comments found under old Rave videos on YT. Like this:

I've noticed that lots of DJs and electronic musicians such as Hot Chip and... Bicep follow the account!

Ha! Brilliant.

We never went to any raves in fields or warehouses . Really can’t remember or understand why. Odd. Went to the Hacienda a couple of times in 1990 and loads of times to Coventry Eclipse as it’s not far from here (12 miles) . Or it was, it’s now a car park. The old building was knocked down years ago. So now the Hacienda is apartments and the Eclipse is a car park.

No, i didn't spot it at the National Gallery.Was rushing round a bit in the end as it was nearing closing and the countless rooms were becoming disorientating. I'd seen it at that JD/NO exhibition in Manchester in 2017 anyway.

National Gallery was great but my back was beginning to ache from hours walking round all afternoon.My brother had a better idea than going to the National Gallery and he went to a pub instead.Before the gallery closed i decided to just sit and chill and look at the Hay Wain.Beautiful
