It's Be A Rebel, and now you can hear a little bit. That sounds like an old school NO synth line to me.

Sounds Electronic-ish to me

I agree that the lyrics of MC were excellent except for this one dodger of a line. I mean come on, Barney could you not think of ANYTHING less clunky? I wish Steve and Gillian would have put their foot down on that one. I don’t let it ruin the song for me but man alive this is the single worst line I’ve ever heard Mr. Sumner utter in a song.

Academic you say? [:p]

OMG!!!!

There are people replying to the sound clip post on NO's facebook page saying, "probably a Blue Monday re-release". The only reason I havent commented with "Are you thick??" Is because BM actually is getting re-released this year [uhoh] .

I still reckon this is gonna be a Rebel and an Ally Pally DVD/album announcement. Synergistic promotion or something.

Oh and for anyone allergic to Facebook, let's embed a Twitter. Especially as there's a bird connection.

I seriously doubt this announcement has anything to do with that. While it's great that Substance is back online, there'll likely be a box set down the road.

Remember, NO have two record labels now: Rhino (Warners), handling their back catalog up to Music Complete, and Mute, handling everything going forward. With all the promotion around the PC&L box (Rhino), it works in Mute's favor to release something new. Tandem publicity.

That's very true. I get that. Let's see what tomorrow brings...

Who really need Substance on streaming? it's just shit.

Saturday morning I spotted Substance back on various digital stores and bought a single track (Confusion) in the hope it had been remastered like all of the other Factory albums.

Turns out it hasn't been (identical to my Facd200 rip) so that is a little disappointing. Joy Division's Substance got its own sound upgrade 5 years ago so why the "gateway" album for so many NO fans is exempted is a bit of a mystery.

Was there a reason why it was removed from streaming for over 5 years? The other Factory albums have been freely available for of all that time.

Assuming licensing or politics.

I always assumed it was deemed 'low priority' by Rhino etc.

In the case of most bands, 'compilation' LPs might be considered 'gravy' in comparison to the 'meat and potatoes' of studio LPs. Obviously, this isn't the case with New Order, with 'Substance' being a vital LP, containing 17 unique songs not appearing on a studio LP. But Rhino might not have paid too much attention to this and treated it like any other 'best of'.

But this is very much speculation on my part.

If it was the Rhino of 10 years ago I would have shared your opinion but to give Warners their dues they have considerably upped their game beginning with "Total". Those in charge of the recent reissues seem to know the value of what they're dealing with, something which was utterly absent for the shit-show that was the Collector's Editions 12 years ago. Anyway, a better sounding Substance would be welcome and I'm sure I can't be the only fan thinking that. The original Factory CDs - and subsequent represses based off of them - are bit quiet and a bass-light.

We know Substance is principally made up of tracks from the 12" singles between 1981 and 1987. We also know Warners are gradually reissuing the 12" singles per album era which could explain why they've not done anything with Substance yet. Why release all the good stuff in one go? That is my thinking.

As of right now we're on album 2 of 4 (excluding Technique as it's post-Substance) so I guess we're looking at 2022-3 for a potential Substance reissue if the pace of the box-set releases speed up. It's been 18 months between the Movement and PC&L boxes, arguably with a well publicised delay into the mix. Hopefully the Low-life/Brotherhood ones will be more like 6 months apart.

But like you perspexorange, all very much speculation on my part.

Cheers Linus, great news just what I (we) needed a brand new New Order song. Sounds good on the snippet. Hopefully 12” release and not just digital

Although I really like this version of Sub-Culture, I'm not keen on the fast edits of the video.

I'm hoping that the rest of the video isn't quite as choppy.

For those that haven't actually gone into YouTube to watch this, it says:

"New Order perform 'Sub-Culture' live from Alexandra Palace in 2018. The full concert will be released on multiple formats in April 2021."

Multiple formats, eh? Hmm. DVD, BD, digital. Possibly a special edition with the 'Decades' documentary. Also, as hinted at previously, maybe a CD+BD / CD+DVD combo.

Day One purchase for me, anyway. Obvs.

Available in multiple formats including 2CDs, vinyl, BD and with T-Shirts, badges and art prints.

There's also a super-deluxe box for £120, including a 48 page book. You can also 'super-size it' with the apparel if you want to part with £170.

I think the 2CD/BD combo will do for me, but I might be tempted with a T-Shirt.

Well I haven’t got, and never got round to buying, a Blu-ray player.Could use it as an excuse to finally get one I suppose. We’ll see.

I can see why there's no DVD release. To be fair, it's a pretty old format nowadays.

It kind of makes sense having DVDs in the 'Definitive Editions' of the studio LPs, as the archive footage contained within isn't going to be in pristine HD quality.

But a modern concert film like this; I think it's best to show it in all it's glory. You have to draw the line somewhere.

I wouldn't've thought that BD players are very expensive these days.

They should have done something for the Miami Beach residency. All those updated deep cuts - aside from the MiF ones - deserved to be heard, now we're getting the same live version of Temptation, True Faith, TPK, Blue Monday, etc for the 5th time in the past 10 years.

Also, I hope the production is on par with the MiF live album. The O2 Academy live album sounds weak in my opinion.

But hey, I'm just glad one of my favorite bands is still active so I shouldn't complain.

^ Yes I accept DVDs are becoming a bit of an outdated format these days.Like I said I could use it as an excuse to get a Blu-ray player and that’s probably actually what I will do.Think you can get a pretty decent Panasonic one for around £60- £70 these days.
