Best Joy Division Album

you really should not have to choose, but...

Despite the fact, that i adore JD for all of their songs, i choose "Closer". The production is incredible!

i don't own unknown pleasures...so how can i choose fairly?

well, get Heart and Soul Box Set... can't go wrong

i agree, Closer is a landmark masterpiece, Steve, Hooky, Bernard, Ian, and Martin Hannett were experienced and hitting on all cylinders together.

Closer's been my fave album of all-time for over 20 years now; can't imagine anything coming near it in the foreseeable future.

Closer, because its dark, serious and mature.

i'd have to go with unknown pleasures. it has the hat trick of new dawn fades, she's lost control and shadowplay on it, which clinches it for me.

Closer. Dare I say one of the greatest albums ever to be recorded.

Unknown Pleasures really made my day when i first got it. I had had Closer for a few months previously, so when I got UP I found the band sounding more energized on this album. It's less mournful, but with its own degree of sadness. I love Closer to death, but you can't beat Disorder for an opener

well, the critcs always seem to go for UP, because when that came out it must have been such a revoloution, noboddy had ever really sounded like that before. But i would have to go for closer, its so haunting...it just gives you an insight into ians 'heart and soul' and tells you everything that was going through his mind, plus hookys bass is just divine, along with the drumming.

I like both Unknown Pleasures and Closer so much that I couldn't decide between them, so i just chose "They both suck" instead. Irony, eh?

this is such a hard question. i choose "closer" but i love "unknown pleasures". the first album sounds like it was recorded in a cell, the second sounds like it was recorded in a open field, so beautiful and so sad.

To hard to choose with so many great songs involved.

A real close call, but the frenzy of Interzone, Disorder plus my favourite JD song Shadowplay just about edges Unknown Pleasures ahead by a very, very small nose

I love both but my favourities songs are on U-P.

definitely Closer. it's a hard choice, but there's something about it that makes it even more special than Unknown Pleasures.

(and the second side of Closer is absolutely unparalleled and likely never will be.)

My Heart (& Soul) goes to the Fact25 Closer. Because of Isolation, H&S, 24 Hours, and...The Eternal: Beautiful ! I love these songs with this kind of atmosphere like The Eternal, Decades or I Remember Nothing on Unknown Pleasures...so sad

'Closer' influenced me in so many respects... lifestyle, taste in music, art, emotional. I played that album over and over again for years. For me, there never was (nor, I think, will be) a record that heartbreaking, with such emotional force and eternal production. It felt like it was not of this world, and still does... Majestic, one of the very best albums ever.

That said, 'Unknown pleasures' is a classic too!

CLOSER takes the cake. Not to say Unknown Pleasures isn't good, because of course both albums are absolutely great. I might even venture to say they're better than any New Order album. Yeah, that's right. Barney just can't top Ian in my book. but that's just my opinion.

Closer's side 2 is a really intense experience, but as a whole Unknown Pleasures hangs together the best. Also, at the time of Closer, I have the impression that Curtis had already detached himself from this life (witness the resignation of Passover and the retrospection of Decades), whereas Unknown Pleasures is the statement of a band that still has the drive and the spirit of a living, hard rocking band: Really Exciting Music that defiantly spits in the face of the hardship expressed in the lyrics.

Unknown Pleasures--fresh and vibrant. It also happens to contain She's Lost Control...

I go with Unknown Pleasures myself. However, it's almost impossible to choose between the best of two albums. If only they would have lasted for a couple more it would be a bit easier.
