I know bernard sumner and johnny marr are on 'this is your life'.

Engineer – Mike "Spike" Drake, Mike Dignam Featuring – Bernard Sumner, Johnny Marr Producer – Stephen Hague Written-By – C. Buckley*, R. Swallow*, S. Herbert*

however, does anyone know if they were just involved with production.

i can't hear him at all if he was doing backup vocals.

According to this link (https://www.discogs.com/release/140299-Banderas-Ripe), they contributed the following:

Backing Vocals, Guitar – Bernard Sumner Guitar – Johnny Marr

However, I've never been able to hear Bernard's voice on it. Must be deep in the mix.

Got the LP and the CD single somewhere around the house. Have to be honest, I was never that enamoured with the song. I think I only bought it due to the Sumner connection. It's fine, but a litlle dull, IMHO.

Can't say whether I've ever even listened to the LP. Think I picked it up cheap some years back.

Actually, you can hear Bernard, only just.

Listen to this around the 2:45-2:46 mark.

You can hear him say 'No' or similar.

There may be other examples. Didn't listen to it all the way through.

What I will say about the record, although I'm not a big fan, hearing it just now does 'take me back' to that era. Visits to Manchester and the Haç.

I seem to recall reading an interview with Barney about this song--I believe he said he was supposed to contribute vocals and guitar, but that he couldn't (or couldn't be bothered to) figure out the guitar bits so he asked Johnny Marr to step in

I can hear him when I play it really loud.

This reissue looks nice, they have other decent songs apart This Is Your Life, but I think I'll stick to my old CD single -- having a hard time realising it really is 30+ years old.
