'Retro' HMV good news

After seeing 'Retro' available for pre-order from Opal Music for "only" £28, I submitted the following query to HMV about the £16.99 pre-order I made last month:

As you will see from the order details forwarded below, I have pre-ordered the forthcoming New Order 'Retro' boxed set online from HMV last month at the price of £16.99. I have since visited the site and found that the price has been increased to a higher price of £35.99. I am writing to enquire as to whether I will still be sold and sipped this boxed set at the price I was quoted back when I ordered on October the 19th.I have found the boxed set at other online stores available for pre-order at a much cheaper price that HMV's £35.99, and am keen to order from another site if the price will be upped to £35.99 even for pre-orders made at the quoted price of £16.99 last month. I would be grateful if you could clarify the price I will be charged on release of this product.

The reply I got sounds very promising indeed (especially as I'm only buying the set for that live disc, and not the other boring re-hashes)...

why did you draw their attention!? if you check your online orders, you would see that the Retro box set is STILL pre-ordered at 16.99. hopefully they wont notice how many (if even at least 10 people have this pre-ordered at half price, somebody is gonna get their ass chewed off, or whatever stupid cliche is appropiate), or they will have to find an excuse to not sell it to the preorder-ers.

one thing for sure, HMV is not a discount store.

Relax. It's not drawing their attention to it, it's consumer rights. I ordered it at £16.99, it's now £35.99.

They can't up the price if the invoice I have in my inbox doesn't say it was a deposit or part payment. I was just clarifying it, in case there is some sort of get-out clause for HMV - as many people on this forum were worried about. If there had been, I'd have cancelled my order and got it for £28 from pre-ordering at Opal. If I'd done that they'd have lost my custom entirely - and I'm sure they didn't put the £16.99 pre-order price on HMV without working out their costs and ensuring they'd make a profit even at that price.

I'm sure there's no "master plan" to rip us all off, they just quoted a lower price initially on the website before the 'official' cost was worked out!

Still, what if this was a direct email to you, and only you. Does this mean that everyone who preordered it will have to email them and complain? Something tells me that they have a few tricks up their sleeves. Oh well, I better email them as well... Better yet, we should write out an email and have everyone on this site that preordered the box set sign it.

I wasn't complaining to them, I was enquiring. If you ordered it when the price was £16.99, you should get it for £16.99. It's called the Trades Description Act. Anything else is a case for Nicky Campbell on Watchdog.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. they'd have to let you know well in advance of shipping if the price was going to go up, in which case you can cancel and order cheaper elsewhere - it's their loss.

It's funny how people don't believe the price, and just assume someone's out to rip them off (other than London Records/New Order with the actual track-list in the first place, that is)!

Didn't mean to say you were complaining, sorry about that. But, seeing how the prices for the box set are starting to pop up on other sites, I'm just getting curious. Clearly £16.99 must have been a mistake, as that's not even a suggested retail price for a box set. I wouldn't feel as if they are ripping us off if they didn't pull through with the original price because in the end we are the one's who tried to take advantage of their mistake. No guilt in that though, I just want to save some cash. Heck, odds are I'll end up buying "International" for my collection with the money saved. Keep in mind that I live in the US, and when the "Heart and Soul" box set finally arrived here it was thrown on shelves with a $60.00 to $80.00 dollar price tag, and I'm guessing "Retro" will be the same. I'm not willing to pay that for a box set with 75% of tracks I already own. If I was a new fan, yeah, I'd get it for that price. But I've been a fan for a couple of years now, so the cheaper the better.

i'm not saying that it is some sort of scam, i don't think they would charge the higher price without notification.

but i would think that somebody (employee, or middle management) would get in big trouble if they end up losing 200 or 300 pounds cause of a listing mistake like this, and then try to cover up and claim that the item number, that was sold for the 16.99 preorder offer, never came into existence. somebody might try to cover their arse and try to save their job.
