As a follow-up to the actual retro, here's an idea I had that would never materialize but that everyone here would go crazy about I think:

New Order re-arranges and re-records, with today's technology and sound, three records made of:

DISC 1 - A selection of Joy Division tracks DISC 2 - A selection of New Order tracks DISC 3 - A selection of songs from the band's side projects

DISC 4 would be made from a selection of other live tracks from the band's career, but it would be THEIR selection of what they consider their best performances.

Could you imagine a fresh new recording of The Perfect Kiss or This Time of Night? Or Dreams Never End, Truth or Leave Me Alone?

And what about What Do You Want From Me? with a chorus sang by Barney?

Or Tighten Up, by Electronic, enhanced with a fantastic Hooky bass solo right in the middle of the song?

I'm sure that everybody but the band would love the idea of reworked JD stuff. They'd have to get off their ever-expanding arses and do something though ! Can you imagine the horror at hearing "come on" recorded at the end of every LWTUA chorus line ? :violent:

well, who needs any new recordings from "Technique"-stuff? i don't think that this album sounds dated. To me it still sounds fresh and up to date :moose:

Er, and how could this work? Royalties for Deborah Curtis for the JD stuff? And to Pottsy and whoever for Monaco? Johnny Marr for Electronic? And to the Revenge lads for any of their stuff?

It's a bit of a non-starter.

And, personally, I wouldn't want any of the side projects diluting the optimum product.

Jarvo's right, by the time its been cleared for copyright with the associate artists, advertised (no pun intended!) packaged, distributed, and all 6squillion collaborative artists have had their cut then the record company will end up making a loss on every one sold..

Interesting idea indeed, but we have to remember that the very fact that the band chose to leave the track-selection duties of the upcoming box set to four relativelly clueless people whose only credentials are a tenuous link with the band itself surely speaks volumes about the non-commital attitude the members of new Order have at present. That alone is a rather depressing thought.

With this in mind, expecting them to go back and re-record their earlier stuff is a bit of a stab in the dark. It would be nice, of course, but, taking into account all the controversy and disappointment generated by the latest lost opportunities, these suggestions will forever remain in the realms of fantasy... sad but true.

Yeah, I know -- and this is why I mentionned that something like that would never materialize.

But quite frankly, I think the copyright issue in this matter would be the smallest problem. There are dozens of unknown bands all over the world who make covers of Joy Division and New Order songs, so I don't think it would be so much of a problem for three of the original members of Joy Division to re-record their OWN songs.

As for the side projects, one short call to Pottsy and Johnny would be enough I guess, but then again, when it comes to cover versions, it's generally the record company who gives out the OK, so that means London would have to deal with Parlophone (Electronic) and Papillon Records (Monaco). The Other Two have recorded for London.

It's really the band's desire to come up with surprising things like this thay would be the major problem...

Also, whenever they remake stuff it always ends up worse than the original. A truly pointless activity.

Yeah, remember the Substance version of Temptation and think a little...

Having said that, I think they do the JD songs better than JD ever did. I'll probably be burned for heresy here, but LWTUA sounds a lot better with Barney singing...

Everyone is going on about retro when the real issue we should be discussing is when will "Pineapple Juice" the Revenge 16CD box set be released???
