Does anyone know what was behind some of N.O.'s stranger titles? Such as ICB or Everythings Gone Green ?
One not-that-interesting fact... Years ago my cousin wrote to N.O in the days when they used to answer their own fan letters. She actually got a reply from Hooky. One question he answered was the origin of "5-8-6"...he said it was the bar structure of "Ecstacy".
I seem to remember my "An Ideal For Living" book from 1984 stating that EGG was named that way because they had been recording the track all night and emerged from the studio in the early morning to find the sun rising. The early morning light over the city on that particular day gave everything a green appearance and one of the band said "Everything's Gone Green!". Hence the title for the song.
I always thought ICB stood for Intercontinental Ballistic -as in the missile - but don't know. I don' think they named it after Ian Curtis Burried.
Your Silent Face had a working title of KW-1 after Kraftwerk one. That is, New Order thought the song sounded like a Kraftwerk song. Many of the set lists where Your Silent Face is played lists the songs as KW1.
I can't remember where I heard/read it from, but Barney used to say that they would take the titles off of old German films as the titles for their tracks. I can't remember if this was something they answered during their interview before Area One or if it was in an article...

Yeah, I remember this interview. It's an article from Pulse! Magazine and Barney said that they nicked a poster from a cinema in Berlin and some song titles were just picked from the poster. Like "The Eternal" that came from a film called "The Eternal Flame".

ICB stands for Icy Cold Butt - the story goes that the band was in the studio all night after starting around noon on a nice hot day (the only one in England that year), and upon emerging at 8am the following morning Peter was like "Damn, I sure do have one icy cold butt" and since everyone knew exactly what he was feeling, they thought ICB would be a great name for the song since it was kind of electronically cold.
Cries And Whispers is an Ingmar Bergman film, though I expect it should really should have been called Mesh.

Sorry to throw a dampener on your theory, but people in England don't call generally it a "butt", and certainly didn't 20 years ago. The Welsh, however.......
Your Silent Face was written when Gillian was first brought into the band, but didn't know how to play her keyboard yet. She used to try to help in song writing, but every one just kept telling her to shut her bloody hole. They wrote YSF as a memorial to Gillian's silent monkey girl years, when she didn't add value to the band other than doing what she was told.

Funny you should ask those people in the background of the perfect kiss video were the winners of new order's "what does I.C.B. stand for" Contest i think the correct answer was icy cold butt!

You're right, if you look closely, you can see Wolfy in the picture because I had the answer first! I was the one giving high fives to Stephen (who shares my name as well as the knowledge needed to answer the age old I.C.B. question).
i think the title to the new order song "The Him" on movement, comes from the book Ian Curtis was reading "The Atrocity Exhibition" by J.G Ballard, ive glanced through it, and its structured with seperate paragraphs; which have their own titles, one of them being "The Him". or it could just be a coincidence.

oh, Ian was a fan of William Burroughs..hence "interzone", the place where "Naked Lunch" was set, proabably Burroughs' most famous book.
