"Rock the Shack": Like it? Don't like it?

i like it, has some kinda live-feeling on the recording and it works live really well. the are much worse tracks on new order records.

i don't hate it, i just don't like it. i think they could do much better. especially on a strong album like get ready.

Rock the Shack is a complete load or wank. Why in the hell is this on the album when Player in the League and Sabotage are better songs? Oh, that's right. Get Ready is the album riddled with meaningless guest appearances. If I play on your record, don't bother paying me, just play on my record....we can drink tons of red wine and snort a few thousand dollars worth of cocaine while we write idiotic music together...

The Lamaq session is better than the album version but both are on a tangent from what I want from neworder. I understand what I want the band to sound like and what they want are different so fair game to them. However, like Slow Jam, when this song comes on and other people are in the room, i get really embarrased that i have a disc with such awful music playing. Really boring rock n roll. Another example of Barney's inability to write a decent lyric.

i think it is a great song, why do so many people hate it? ahh who cares everybody hates we all stand too and i love that one as well

My mate SHACK has a RADIO STATION called the Radio ShacK.He owns aprox 5000 CDs.This is a tribute to him and i love this song. ROCKET THE SHACK :D

yeah, i like it too. it's new order having fun, trying to act half their age and falling flat on their faces looking like twits, but not caring anyway. which was one of the whole points of the band in the first place, eh?

I disagree with your last statement. Falling on their faces, looking like twits and not caring was definitely NOT in the plans from the beginning. Look at the serious tone of most of their output up to 1987 and it's obvious that when they transitioned from Joy Division they were still very much into making "serious" music. I beleive the idea that they don't care/falling on faces/acting like twits/ came after they began ruining their live sets by getting too fucked up to play. Listening to the old boots from 81-85 shows a band focused (usually) on creating a mood and playing some quality toons. Rock the Shack falls into a seperate catagory altogether. Even Every Little Counts is respectable AND funny. I don't think New Order recorded RTS with tongue in cheek...i think they have just lost the plot. I'll restate my theory for New Order's redemption: 6 vocal tracks and 4 instrumentals per album until Bernard can prove he can write lyrics to 10 songs in one year.

I do agree with the acting half their age part....

Who gives a shite if the lyrics suck...it's them having a good time which I think they are allowed to do... ...besides, YOU didn't write the song, so why be embarrassed? No point in that.

I don't love it but can appreciate that they want to do something a little more off the cuff occasionally.

I would like it much more if it didn't have the awful "guest star" backing vocals.

my initial impression was that New Order was trying to write a Stooges song... and it is well known that Iggy Pop and the Stooges were a large influence on them back when they were starting Joy Division... not terrible to start, but the song overall seems sort of half-assed, the lyrics seem like a joke without a punchline... if it is tongue in cheek, that tongue is hidden pretty deep in there.

sort of like... "LOOK mates, we made a fooking Stooges rock song, just like we are 19 again..., yeah, right... ... "rock the shack", indeed! (using Dr. Smith from Lost in Space voice)... it is pretty lame in some ways

i've always wondered if some people disliked "Rock the shack" just because it has lots of guitar, that reason is just stupid. they outta buy the Iggy Pop mix of Raw Power and play it loud.

Well, it takes all kinds of fans! I dunno...I spent more than 10 years studying vocal technique, and granted...I'M not signed to a major label or doing a world tour, but Bobby Gillespie's Bob-Dylan-esque vocals irritate me. Same reason I can't get into Bob Dylan. Just my own opinion...and remember, I never heard either the Lamac (sp?) version or the remix that everyone is raving about...
