Revisiting the vinyl

I'd just like to say that after I bought myself a Technics 1210 and a decent pre-amp in the summer, what a pleasure it is to go back to my (almost) complete collection of New Order twevle inch and seven inch singles.

No worries there about having things remastered - just a slab of black plastic to drop a stylus on. Very satisfying. I miss the days of recognizing a New Order twevle inch in the record shop on the day of release due to it not having any words on the cover. You got such a nicer smell from the cardboard and the print on the sleeve than you do with CDs.

I'm no vinyl junkie - on the contrary, I hardly ever buy anything but CDs these days, mainly due to lack of space and having a CD walkman - but I love my old 12 inch collection.

Who needs digitally enhanced compilations on CD when half the pleasure with these old tracks is taking them out of the sleeve and cueing them up!

That's what I reckon, anyway.

The smell of the COVER.God and i thought i had problems!:D

Get a Bush MTT1, its only £50, but sounds like decks costing 3 times as much. Its an absolute steal. Or a Project Debut II if you have a bit more cash. (£110)

i have lots of great stuff on vinyl (no new order, though) and nothing to play it on. the last record player i had was, erm, BRIGHT PINK! (from my pre-teen years, ok!)

Vinyl rules. To those looking for a TT, if you're going to be playing your singles, make sure it has a speed switch. Some of the newer belt drive models don't have a switch, you have to lift the platter and move the belt from one gear on the spindle to another, which is a bit of a pain in the ass (er, arse), especially if you are frequently switching speeds to listen to 4 minute songs.

Agreed. I've been threatening to get one for ages - I've got a bundle of Factory vinyl in me living room that I've not played in 10+ years. Itching to get back into it after all this time..

And I bet the first thing you reach for is the Hac flexi....

Few things beat a bit of vinyl!

Dig out your vinyl copy of Low-Life and remember the first time you held that tracing paper cover...almost as impressive as the music it contained. They don't make 'em like that any more.

Are you seriously telling me there are any genuine music fans out there who don't purchase a CD without first smelling the booklet, or even better sniffing the inside of the sleeve to a 12" piece of vinyl? It has to be the best smell in the world! Or am I mad?

The 1210 rocks. Been using them for years in an understated way on Hospital Radio, and the direct magnetic drive makes the speed ROCK solid, rather than those pissy belt drive things which stretch and affect the speed of what you're playing.

Hello folks...on this subject all I can say is NEVER...NEVER settle for second best. If you're gonna get a turntable don't fuck up your tunez, especially NO/JD by getting some second rate 50 pound jobbie!!! That is sacreligious!!!!!! I own the 1210 MkII with a grrrrreat amp and let me say, it is worth it. You'll really notice the difference when you get tired of some cheezy-ripped mp3 version of some old tune downloaded from the net and you decide to burn yourself...that good old "Analog" thump will forever change your life my friends!!!

On another note, picked up international here in Japan about three weeks ago and the Jap version comes with some NO stickers inside...is this the case elsewhere out of curiosity??

Yeah, sorry I went AWOL. :) I've been on the frontlines for the internet radio fight and been working almost fulltime on my webcast. The Retro released inspired me to get back in the loop on things. When I came back to the site, I couldn't find my previous profile.
