Good New Order anecdotes

Ok, so even though I've been regularly visiting this site and reading the thoughts of New Order fans (freaks, according to my sis) for about 2 years, I've just registered as a member. Glad to make my first post.

Thought I'd start a thread...sort of a good New order story thread. Here's mine....

I was in the one Tower Records in Chicago with my brother and I was purchasing the 12" of World. Had to be around 92 - 93 right? Anwyay, we're standing in line and of course, I've made a convert of this brother, so he knows to talk about how good the album cover is. This is the 12" of World with the cityscape. My brother asks me what city it is. Off the top of my head, I start lying, and I say it's Chicago.

My brother, knowing me, is like, "Bullshit..you're lying." So I start to try and convince him and I start pointing at buildings on the cover, fully intent on making up anything I can to convinve him that it's Chicago.

About 5 seconds later, my mouth drops open as I realize IT IS CHICAGO. In that cover, you're looking west from lower downtown...it;s probably the Sears Tower. The freeway loops are where the Kennedy and I-290-westbound meet. The campus of University of Illinois at Chicago is in the lower left foreground (the real tall building there is University Hall). What was even freakier for me and my borther was that my apartment building on Halsted was right there in the pic.

So as we drove south down Halsted from the Tower Records in Lincoln Park, my brother was staring at the 12" cover like it was a map,checking real locations against the images on the cover, and completely flabbergasted that, as I had always maintained, the music had a special connection to me....

I know that most of you probably feel the same about the band or about the music, so maybe this thread will start the anecdotes flowing. If not, hope you enjoyed the tale, and I hope I didn't bore anyone with too much specificity about Chitown. We love our city to death so we can't help it.

I too am checking on the possibility of getting the Retro limited edition...I have 4 buyers working on it in LA so maybe I'll have some good news for Americans when my contacts get back to me.

Glad to finally have bit the bullet and joined the forum. Great site Mr. LeBlanc, and to the rest of you, I've enjoyed your posts for a long time.

i slept in a car park next to some drug dealers on my 18th birthday at reading 98... does that count as a anecdote?

And as another native Chicagoan who's head you can see bopping up and down in the "alternative" World video (the one on NOStory), you'd think by this stage of the game I'd have recognized the World cover shot as my fair city. Nice one! I'll have to check when I get home to see if the old Chicago Stadium is visible on there - if so there's a fair shot my old apartment building, about 6 blocks north, would be in the photo as well...

I do believe this is my first post, even though I as well have been a long-time lurker. Keeping my fingers crossed for an opportunity to get the Retro plus bonus disc here!

BTW Virgin Megastore on Michigan Ave has loads of Internationals. As senseless as the tracklisting is, I picked it up 2 weeks ago there and I do believe they had it only 2 or so days after its initial release in Australia. So take that, Brits!

hehe, true enough. Was just a wry comment about how, for once, Americans were able to obtain a New Order release (albeit a crappy one) before their Brit cousins across the pond were able to.

the night before the first time i saw new order--summer 1989; red rocks amphitheatre; denver, colorado; with PIL and the sugarcubes--i decided that i was going to 'cleanse' myself of any crap music i used to listen to (i was 13). anyhoo, my friend and i ripped apart my 'tiffany' cassette and i ceremoniously flung the tape into the oscillating fan in my room. my father spent the next few days trying to extricate the tape from the fan...i can't remember if he ever got that poor fan to work again. he was not pleased.

Good story Agent Wood. The only artist that survived for me from those pre-New Order radio days was Prince. Sure, a touch of classic Madonna and Michael Jackson is ok now and then, and a buying a Men at Work compilation for nostalgia's sake is all right, but with Tiffany...I think you did what needed to be done, and did it with appropriate flair.

Too bad the fan had to suffer.

I was going clubbing in Chicago one night, parked my car in Wrigleville near the Wrigled Field (that's the Cubs stadium for you people who don't know Chicago).

So I had this awesome Joy Division T-shirt in the car...low-quality black shirt with a red and a blue lighning bolt, one each coming down from the pecs to meet together mid-abdomen. Simple white print Joy Division below. Great shirt.

SO...I left my wallet with credit cards, driver's license, etc. in the car underneath the seat. Was underage so no need to take ID. Took my cash and went clubbing.

Came back a few hours later and the car was unlocked...the door had been opened somehow. My wallet was still in the car. They'd left everything but one of my credit cards. Nothing was else was missing, nothing was damaged, so I counted myself lucky.

The next day--yep, you guessed it--I realized the thief had stolen my Joy Division shirt. Robbed by a JD-loving thief. Robbed by a thief with taste.

I loved that shirt and have never been able to find it again.

Good anecdotes them BRANT!.But there are NO freaks here apart from GRIGORI...JOHNNY GILES...BENNY...MAJOR T ..SHUGZV...BUDVAR 1 and 2...HUNTSMAN...PATRICK...BLT..SUNRISE...AGENTWOOD...MICKEY WAY aka MR DISCO....and on and on. Of course I meant Wrigley Field and I also meant Wrigleyville. And in my very first post I meant convince when I said "convinve" and brother when I said "borther."

C'mon man, instead of checking my spelling, add an anecdote. Maybe I should have been more careful, but on a site like this and in a medium like a BB, I worry very little about perfect spelling.

I've been signed up for about a year and a half now, but I didn't start posting 'till about a month ago. Hell, I didn't even bother to look at the message boards 'till recentely. I've always used this site to check up on the news and stuff.
