I got ahold of the RETRO promo and started listening to the live tracks -- and Fine Time is funtastic !

Barney is whispering "eeeeecstasyyyyyy... ecstaaaasyyyyy...." at some point in the song, and then the high pitch robotic voices come in the middle of the song, and I'm ashamed to admit that it's the very first time I realize that this is what these robotic voices are actually saying: "ECSTASY" !!!!!

And by the way, a lot of the live tracks are sort of "mixed" altogether. Very nice.

ok, give us a run down of some of the other gems...sound quality, performance etc...NOW!

I'm sorry.. but Turn My Way is fantastic.. it's so stereo, you have Barney on right and Billy on left :D

Temptation is great.

I can say, only the older tracks have medium sound, but I guess it's because of the date they were recorded, not the sound recording.

I will post 30 seconds clips if I have the time tonight...

They are ok, trust me.. but of course it's not all a 2002 concert.. Ceremony, the music is louder than the vocals, it seems the recording source was with beside the guitar :)

The worst one is EGG... the sound is average.

Starting with Age of Consent, the sound quality is better, and it's good.. funny thing, World in 1993 has the most feedbacks ;)

I will review Retro (glad I have a 6 CD charger in my car) for you.. don't worry.

I must say so far I'm impressed with the quality of the recordings.. I didn't get International, but Temptation 12" for instance sounds really good, I'll have to compare with my CD version of the EP to be sure it's remastered..

And I like that Confusion mix ;)

Well, the most interesting tracks for me are:

  • Fine Time
  • Turn My Way (it's true that they did a good job mixing it)
  • Elegia (even though there's an irritating tape sound behind)
  • Crystal
  • World
  • Temptation

The Perfect Kiss, Regret and As It Is When It Was are all great and perfect sounding but they all come from shows several of us have been owning for years, so nothing new there.

But the great news is that there are no audience recordings. And if I may add, I think it is a total shame that the 1989 show from where Fine Time has been taken is not being released in its entirety. The sound is NEAR PERFECTION and the setlist is great. Look for yourselves:

1 Ceremony
2 Touched by the Hand of God
3 Dream Attack
4 True Faith
5 Mr Disco
6 Your Silent Face
7 1963
8 Vanishing Point
9 Round & Round
10 Temptation
11 The Perfect Kiss
12 Bizarre Love Triangle
13 Fine Time

You know, I'd love New Order to do a little bit like Pearl Jam and release several of the best shows they have recorded throughout their career, in limited editions -- 30,000 copies each? True gems for fans!

I couldn't agree more - on both of your points. Of all the tours, I would like to see the band release a full show from the Technique tour. The release of an entire tour's worth of Pearl Jam live shows a few years ago was a very unique approach - one that I've hoped NO would embrace ever since the PJ releases.

I'm glad to hear that World is a good recording - that show is the only time I've ever caught the Order live. Sad isn't it?

A funny recollection from that gig is Hooky having trouble getting his drum sticks out of the little bag hanging from his electronic drums during TPK. By the time he had the sticks in hand, he had all but missed his part and wound up tossing them into the crowd.

That was the point of doing those samples.. as you can see, it stops the moanings, and it will promote the box set, as it should...!
