For JD fans......I have JD's Substance and like it a lot. I want more JD stuff but im not sure whether I should get Unknown Pleasures and Closer or just get the Heart and Soul boxset? I know some of Substance overlaps on these albums--but which combo of CD's is worth getting--without wasting cash?

Any help would be great...thanks.

The heart and soul box set has the complete studio back catalogue plus some unreleased live material, demo's and sesions. A nice way to start your collection. ;)

Heart and Soul.

I just got it last week and it is incredible. I listened to it again today and it is simply dazzling.

Heart and Soul basically has everything that Unknown Pleasures+Closer have PLUS live material and other stuff right?

Try Closer. That's my fave album from JD. After that, go for Unknown Pleasures, then the boxset (most expensive). That way you'll be ready for the full JD experience!

Well If I were to get Closer and Unknown Pleasures--would their be any point in getting Heart and Soul afterwards?

I am running a little short on cash--and if the extra NON Closer, Unknown Pleasures songs on the Heart and Soul Box set aren't that GREAT and worth spending an extra $25 on at the moment--then I will get Closer and Unknown Pleasures.

But Im not sure how much the extra JD stuff is worth or how good it is cause I never heard the Peel sessions etc...

Heart and Soul definitely! But i'd also recommend the brilliant live-document "Les Bains Douches, Live 1979". :hooky:

Unknown Pleasures and Closer are both included in full on the H&S box. So, enjoy (...division)!

So its worth paying $55 for the entire boxset--rather than paying $25 for just Unknown Pleasures and Closer?

Is the live stuff real good and the entire package just worth the extra $30?

Well, if you buy Heart and Soul, you'll be getting every track from Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Substance, and about half the tracks from Still.

The songs from Still that didn't make it to the box set are the last 11 live tracks, and the post produced version of the song Walked in Line. Heart and Soul only gives you a demo of that song. So you'll have to buy Still eventually if you're a completist freak like the rest of us.

But... Heart and Soul gives you disc full of demos, and a disc of live material. Now, I was already obsessed with the band when I bought the box set, so this was a big plus for me. A buddy of mine wanted to get into them as well, so I bought him the box set for his birthday. I guess four cds of Joy Division were a bit overwhelming for him as a starting fan, and he won't even bother listening to the demo and live discs. He says they are crap...

So, it all depends on how much you're into the band. The quality of the demo and live cds are very, very below average, so being a new fan, you may not like them at all.

So you have two choices here, flip a coin. Heads - Get both albums plus Still = $45 Tails - Get the box set with pretty much everything above, plus stuff you may not like = $60

Then you have the two Fractured live albums, Permenant for the Pennine version of LWTUA, the BBC sessions, the Warsaw bootleg... Nevermind, I shouldn't have mentioned this. Just flip the coin...

I'd say if you're into the sound you find on "Substance" you'd do well getting Unknown Pleasures on CDNOW for 11 bucks. Then if you like that, try Closer. If you like that then i'd say buy the box set. (Closer is a very... trippy album, and if you don't like that then there's no sense in buying all that box set material)

Trippy ? WTF ?

heart&soul. buy it now that you have the opportunity. think about it. then you wouldn´t need to buy anything else because EVERYTHING´s in there  if you buy only the albums then something will always be missing. believe me, you´ll end up buying the box set anyway. NO/JD are a one way fast highway. once you started you can´t stop. :rolling:

Buy Heart and Soul. The only reason I've never bought it is because I had all the records, sessions and live tapes already !

It's got to be the HEART & SOUL BOXSET!! This was the first ever Joy Division Item I ever purchased & I've never regretted it. It contains more or less everything that Joy Division have ever done, apart from Their very early Warsaw recordings & certain live recordings, but for those you can get 'LE BAINS DOUCHES' or 'WAREHOUSE, PRESTON' from most music stores (HMV)

SPREAD THE WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
