it's not that Face Up is a bad song, it's just the one i tend to skip. Recently been playing it a little more but still not as good as the others...live versions sound very good though.
This album has held up very well over time. "Sunrise" is the only track I would even consider skipping over, so it gets my vote.

But....ah, forget it. Sunrise RULES MR. Illinois...put it on again when something pisses you off.
one way conversations do not work some how....
I can't find a song to vote for...
where is the None of the above button???
I'm so indecisive..![]()
this is a terrible decision to make. i chose "sub-culture" only because of those terrible 12" mixes.... eeesh!

But.. they are not on the album!!
P/S: Who voted for TPK ? ![]()
Now, I'm sure everyone will bash on me because of this... but I choose "The Perfect Kiss". Now, I love the song to death, but the reason I voted against it is because it's edited. Not only does it cut out the kick-ass beginning bass line, but it's also missing a whole verse, the "when you are alone at night..." part.
It is one of my favorite tracks, so it was hard for me to choose againts it. But, I usally skip this track because I'd rather hear the 12" version from "Substance".
Subculture, In an almost flawless album it is the song I sometimes skip (if only to get earlier to the gorgeous Face-up)

my thoughts exactly.....just when im gettin into it, it fades out. the first version i ever heard of TPK was from the video, and nothing compares..... I just got this record a few months ago and I love it!! Dont really think theres a worst song, maybe most out of place, that would be Face Up..

nope...not going to bash you...hell, I'm going to agree with you...this song isn't very good without the "missing" parts!!!
The hardest poll I've ever seen!! All tracks are excellent!!
My vote is for "Sunrise", the weakest one. Remember their performance on "Pumped Full of Drugs" when Barney screams like a chicken 'cause Stephen is kicking the drums too hard? Pathetic. Ian Curtis would be ashamed...
Actually, this "worst song" exercise is having me thinking how immensely good they are. How difficult to find a really bad song (apart from RTS)is.

grrrrrrrr...RTS is a GREAT FOOKING SONG...would you cats all please lay off of it???
Let me get this straight. I love The Perfect Kiss, but the Low-Life edit does no credit to the song. Give me the 8 mins + seriously orgasmic version any day.
I can't recall the last time I didn't skip Elegia. In fact, I may never have actually listened to it.
There is no bad song on this album, but I chose The Kiss that Would Have Been Perfect if Four Other Minutes Had Been Given to Me.

Am I the only one who would gladly trade in the "missing parts" in favor of the last minute or so of the Low Life edit? I just think that the 12" version is too synthy towards the end and drowns out the greatness of the Hooky solo about 4:00 into the edit. It might just be me tho. I also think that the intro on Low Life is fantastic. Its rather abrupt but the cheezy stereo effect at the get go grabs me every time ;)
I vote Perfect Kiss. See the comments by Low-Life, Benny and that General Muffy or whatever dude.

Well, the intro on the Low-Life version wasn't even original. They just took the beginning of The Kiss of Death and swapped them.... No Hooky bassline = caca.
This is the hardest poll ever. Struggle to vote for anything but at a push would go for Face Up. Can't believe anyone could vote for Sunrise, this track does it for me. As previously posted - just put it on when you are pissed off and turn it up VERY LOUD!!!!

I completely agree...I discovered this album when I was (still am) going through a weird phase with my on again/off again long distance girlfriend....this song especially speaks to me ![]()
Ok, WHO VOTED FOR "THIS TIME OF NIGHT"!!??
![]()
sooner I actually like that song but there´re no bad songs on low life. nevertheless I think no LL song will be chose as the worst ever.
I can't believe you guys, you will force me to include TPK in the list of worst New Order songs?
It's in the top 5 poll!!! ![]()
Yes, it's an edit, but it's not the worst song on the album :) It won best song for the same album !!!
how can you people vote for sooner than you think?![]()
for shame.![]()
oh well, that did it. elegia got my vote, gotta break that tie some how.:D

Just goes to show......we like the real version, not the edit ! There are no bad songs on Low Life, each of them would stand up easily today if played.
I thought it was only me but now I realised is a quite widespread opinion. Let's face it: THERE ARE NO WORST SONGS IN LOW LIFE. Period. This poll should be put to rest together with all the angst and depression caused by it. Spotnick, let it go, man, just let it go.

Listened to the whole of Low Life for the first time in ages for this poll (voted Subculture by the way). Does anyone else think the production badly dates the album now ? I think it sounds very '80's pop'.
It definately sounds like 1985, but on the other hand, the production on most of Brotherhood....![]()

i'll give you that...still love how it sounds though...brings me back to a simpler time in my life.
Feel compelled to defend Sunrise & Face Up. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to those who've voted for either that they have never witnessed them being played live. Both cracking choons.
The band playing Sunrise on Whistle Test from the Hacienda in '85 is one of my fave NO on TV moments. Barney's fractured guitar sound, his concentration, Hooky's classic bass stance, moody synths & furious drumming. Perfick New Order.
As for, TTON....one of the blandest things they've done IMHO. Just can't get passionate about it. I know some folks love it e.g. Nick, but just don't geddit meself.
Each to their own.
Brian, is it you holding up the 'Face Up' placard at Gorge??
not me but i did take the picture...i wish i knew who that was though. for those who haven't seen it...check Tours and Concerts - Get Ready - Gorge and scroll down...also a good pic of JGiles and AJarvis etc. holding up a Union Jack with Ceremony scralled through the center...it worked! (eventually) What will you guys "request" next? Sunrise would be awesome and I completely agree that live versions of FaceUp are ACE!
I voted for Face Up, a little cheesy, but I still really like the song, but the rest is just so damn good.
Perfect Kiss I can understand people voting for, but the edit is still great, but I am a fan of the 12" version.
Cheers ALEX
Hmmm...had to go for Sooner than you think just over Elegia. I love the version of Subculture on here, its a thousand times better than that hideous Substance remix.

Too right about that remix. One of their low points without a doubt. Don't think I've played it since '85.

I agree. By the way, does anyone know where can I download any DECENT Subculture remix?

sunrise used to be my favorite but now it's this time of night. when lowlife's in the car changer i could listen to track number three over and over for an hour long car ride.

If theres one thing i hate, it's wailing backing singers and Subculture's Substance mix has tonnes of this. Low Life is a great album and i couldn't vote for TPK, but i do skip it as it cannot compare to the splendour of the full length version.
What is all this 'Negetive worst of shit..? Threre are no worst or shit songs on 'LOW-lIFE' and for those who voted 'Sunrise, Elegia...get real.....you obviously havent heard em play them live!! Enough said.
I had a hard time choosing between "Sunrise" and "Sooner Than You Think".... I find the latter unmemorable but "Sunrise" is the one I always skip. I think it sounds more out of place on a mainly synth driven album more so than "Face Up", which I think is a great album closer.
Crap, I just realized that this was a vote for the worst song on Low Life, not the best. I voted for Sunrise, which is easily the best.
Originally posted by Dufford Charleywood Threre are no worst or shit songs on 'LOW-lIFE' and for those who voted 'Sunrise, Elegia...get real.....you obviously havent heard em play them live!!
Too true, though I've gotta admit that I did vote for Elegia cause I have pulled the needle off the record a couple of times. :o:o:o
I love the whole album so picking was very difficult.
:D:D:D:D:D anita, shocked that people voted for Perfect Kiss :O
There are no bad songs on Low Life...this is an undisputable fact.
I even like the edit of TPK as its a nice little taster before the gargantuan 12" version.
Face Up and Sunrise used to get a great response from the more lively members of the audience - it would be nice to see these re-introduced to the set from time to time.
I voted for Elegia, but i'm not proud of it...Low-Life is one of my favourite albums of all time. And i like Elegia, of course...
Incredibly tough decision. Not really a weak song amongst them. Voted for STYT at a push. All in all a superb album.
I can't vote either. It's a lot easier to say what's the BEST about this album
Sunrise Elegia The part in "Face Up" where the guitars kick in after he says "Guess what I'm gonna do to you!"
Went with STYT, but really the Perfect Kiss on this one just ain't THE Perfect Kiss, now is it?! Should've gone with that one, but it's big brother's a classic so it's hard to vote it out. The edit is one of their worst though, imo. A late album filler, and nothing more.

Exactly why i voted for THE PERFECT EDIT!:D
i feel dirty picking one; the whole album is so incredible. it's NO's best, i'd say.
it's also hard trying to pick out a favorite. probably This Time of Night.
i love Face Up! i think it's loaded with amazing hooks and i think it's a fantastic song. i don't know if it should have been the album closer (i think This Time of Night would have been better), but i love the song.
Just noticed I mixed STYT and Sunrise in my vote ;) Woups.
Seriously, there is no winner in this poll!
my vote goes to Sooner Than You Think. the synth work on it is excellent and has an almost campy feel to it, but the song is the album's weakest, in my opinion.
Face Up gets my vote just ahead of Perfect Kiss (album edit). They are both good songs but the others are better.
Originally posted by Dufford Charleywood What is all this 'Negetive worst of shit..?Threre are no worst or shit songs on 'LOW-lIFE' and for those who voted 'Sunrise, Elegia...get real.....you obviously havent heard em play them live!!Enough said.
You shouldn't have to hear 'em live to know that this album is great from beginning to end. People voting for Sunrise are CRAZY, deaf, comatose, or all of the above - this album is one of the few perfect NO albums (like Technique). This poll BLOWS!
This was a toss-up between STYT and Face-up for me. My final tally goes to Face-up, though I feel it is a better song than STYT. Why did I vote for it then? False advertising is why! Everytime I here the opening to Face-up, it get emotionally ready for an awesome electronic tour-de-force, NO style. Then, just as it should get going, BAM!, power-pop, NO style. Pisses me off every time. By the time it gets to the end, I realize, hey this isn't such a bad song, but by them the damage is done.
What a crap poll!! two of my favourite songs are at the top
Subculture should be streets ahead on this one...
And after all the fuss you made about Elegia on the bonus disc.. tsssssssk
What is the point of making everyone think which song the like the least ? They're all great, TPK isn't as good as the full version but it's still great, the thing they did with ih on The Best of is much worse, just cutting out the best bit. I didn' vote for any of the songs.
The fact that there is practically a four-way tie confirms what everyone knows: every track is excellent.
I voted for FACE-UP,should have gone for THE PERFECT KISS,love the song but hate the edit. Its that reason LOW-LIFE is number 2.
Originally posted by anita I love the whole album so picking was very difficult.:D:D:D:D:Danita, shocked that people voted for Perfect Kiss :O

JUST THE EDIT
WOW, actually i refused to vote in this poll! ;) it feels like an internal struggle just to pick a song that gets the title "worst song on album," none of it deserves that. the album's that good! just like PC&L, there's not one bad song on it.
if my life depended on it... mmmaybe "The Perfect Kiss" because of the edit? Or "Elegia" because its an instrumental? Or maybe "Subculture" because i like the track, but not as much as the others? see? even when my life depends on it, I still can't make a decision! ![]()
but i could NEVER EVER vote for "Sunrise" or "This Time of Night."
Originally posted by Marco Pleil "Sunrise"! i'd rather listen to The Cure's "A Forest"
haha!
don't those opening synth lines sound awfully similar? also, ever notice "All The Way" nicks the bassline from "Just Like Heaven?" and "Crystal" has a bassline that's awfully similar to, again "A Forest?" :D
Interesting to see how heavily the disinterest is in the second half of the album. For me, the lowlight was Perfect Kiss, I like the song in its entirety, not scalpled in half. Other than that, every song is terrific. Sooner than you think, a song I originally wasn't interested in I now love, whereas the original version of Sub Culture which got me to by the album, no longer garners nearly as much interest on my side. Still, i dislike the version of Perfect Kiss the most.
Ive always love Sooner Than You Think, I think its the line which is forever relevant 'theres right and theres wrong theres good and theres bad theres an answer to this I wish I had'. Struck a chord when I first heard it and it still does now.
Cheers ALEX
I really love the finale to the song after Barney finishes singing the last lyric. It's complex, beautiful, interesting and unusual, doesn't really sound like anything I've ever heard. I have an old bootleg on record of them doing what I think was an early version of this in late '83 called, "Aleph." Very interesting.
I love the whole album and to pick the worst is very hard to do. But the edit of PK would get my vote
I was faced with the bizarre concept of voting my favourite New Order song in as the worst of the tracks on Low Life -I am of course another who votes for The Imperfect Edit as a miss. Quite why the full version never appeared is beyond me, even nearly 18 years after hearing the 4 minute version for the first time and feeling a little deflated : the whole album is only 35 minutes long or so (remember, this was in the days when "the law" said albums had to be around 40-45 minutes so you could fit them into one side of a C90 cassette....ahhh, them's was the days).
Originally posted by bong801 but i could NEVER EVER vote for "Sunrise" or "This Time of Night."
Well, I just did, cause I think those 2 songs are the worst of an album which tends to get too overrated. But hey, that's not to say I don't like the record! ;)
I vote for Sub-Culture, Barney's vocals suck, it's the worst newOrder song ever! If you don't believe me why did Peter Saville refuse to design a cover for it?
Originally posted by Martin Davies I vote for Sub-Culture, Barney's vocals suck, it's the worst newOrder song ever! If you don't believe me why did Peter Saville refuse to design a cover for it?
Did he refuse to sign a cover for it? If he did it would've been for that 12" debacle then, and not the original Low-Life version, which personally I still think is a classic.

Sub-culture is a New Order pearl for me.
