i love "turn the heater on" i think it is the weirdest, beautiful, most heartfelt cover they have ever done.

I absolutely hate Vietnam. Not necessarily the song itself, despite the pedestrian and predictable lyrics, but the performance. I played it twice; the second time with my hands bound so I couldn't grab a rusty sewing needle and plunge it into my eardrums to end the horror. The pristinely played and utterly devoid-of-life faux reggae was bad enough, but when Barney and Generic Backup Diva No. 544 couldn't even settle on how to pronounce "Vietnam" -- that's when I knocked over a candle and let the hot wax pour into my ear canal for relief.

I immediately put on "Les Baines Douches" as an antidote, thank God. And there in my headphones was not a clique of bored by-the-hour session players but an actual goddamned BAND, wailing away like they actually gave a flaming fuck, like it mattered...like life itself depended on getting the music out to the audience.

Hold that thought...microwave burrito's ready.

I will maybe reply to this again later but one thought immediatly springs to mind... from what you say you seem to insinuate that the band has actually got worse 24 years on and thousands of performances later. bains douches was 1979 and Vietnam was recorded in 2003 To say that the band sounded better 24 years ago than they do now is somewhat dismissing all there achievements and hard work that they have put in over nearly quarter of a century is it not??

Im sure the band would agree that you improve with practice... it seems you dont seem to think so!! ;)

oh and that 'generic backing singer' is DAWN ZEE im sure a few people may have heard of her..... ;)

Quite the contrary. Despite how many people slag "Rock the Shack," I love it, because it showed that these guys can still tear it up in the studio together...if they want to. Same goes for recent live versions of Joy Division tracks.

My vote goes to the Sparks cover because it shows a band that takes chances. God, to try to integrate sequenced synths into a live band at that time took guts...not to mention muscle. Those things weighed a ton. And this wasn't an audience that came to hear "the hits," nor one that was used to even hearing synthesizers...at all...and yet NO hit them with this challenging stuff. No wonder Bernard looked so scared in all those old concert videos.

It's like Blue Monday...drum machines have since been used on 175,000 tracks, but that one track still stands out as one of a kind.

It's all a matter of expectations. I suppose "Vietnam" is a perfectly competent coast, but I hope it's not indicitive of the band's "new direction."

She's got a nice voice, but I'm glad the band hasn't rushed to overdub new backing vocals on "Paradise" or "Procession."

Once in a while background singers emerge as stars, but then you end up with Sheryl Crow and Paula Cole. You're welcome to both.

In retrospect, I may have slightly overstated my dislike of "Vietnam."
