The best "best of album"

The best of are good and International to...but Substance is Substance

Haven't we already had this poll before?......oh well, guess I'll vote anyways

i haven't got it yet, but i voted for "Retro"...even if "Love Vigilantes" is missing.

Why try 'Retro' when there's 'Substance', not only the best 'Best of'-album, but the very best and most essential New Order album, period. To put things even more succinctly, it would rank to the upper tops of an overall 'Best of'-albums poll!

SUBSTANCE...lots of em and taken with a lot of beer!

Substance is the absolute best-of album for so many reasons. Almost every song on there is spectacular (yes, even on the b-disc). Probably my favorite New Order album, although Low-Life and Movement come close.

I went for the 1994 (best of), but only because I've played that more often that Substance. I think the pop format of the (best of) works better than Substance, which gets a bit weighed down in parts IMHO. But then again I've only been a fan of the band from 2001 onwards so it wasn't like I was "into" Substance when it was era-specific.

Substance 1987 for me too, a nice big double LP full of 'Order classics. It's pretty much an album in it's own right.

The U.S. version of (?) isn't bad either.

Substance is good but features NOTHING from their last 3 albums so its not that good!!

No "Best Of" can honestly compete with Retro for completeness as it spans their career more completely than anything else commercially available on the market. (although 20years is a nice slimmed down version!)

Best of 94 got my vote cos its the album that got me into NO

I have always loved Substance but now that I've heard Retro it's a close call. Some of the mixes I had never heard before (unlike some of you that seem to have 6 versions of every track ?!) and I have to say I actually like Regret Sabres Slow 'N'Low mix whereas I never really liked the original. Also I was surprised when I heard Let's go on the Fan disc 'cos I've got a copy of the demo (courtesy of Rocket Mick) which is completely different to the official version. I prefer the demo I must say. As for various mixes, I've got five different versions of Here to Stay (only because I bought an australian cd to get Player in the League, 6 tracks 5 of which are Here to Stay): radio edit original edit felix da housecat - three extended glitz mix the scumfrog dub mix extended instrumental mix Wonder if there are any more versions out there ?!?

No need to explain : the substance is the soul of all their work.

I choose substance, but i have some problems with it:

1. They use the first version of "Ceremony" without Gillian Gilbert on synth.
2. The re-recorded versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion" are not as good as the originals.
3. "Cries And Whispers" is listed as "Mesh". Actually my favorite "Best Of" is the "Factus 8" E.P.

Substance is obviously the best piece of work but yer really streching it a bit to call it a "best of".

My vote would have to go for the American version of "best of '94". Remember being v. excited when I stumbled accross it in HMV in NYC mainly due to the fact that I wasn't even aware that this version existed. Nearly fucked up by leaving it on the plane during a stop-over in Iceland on the way home.

Astoundingly when I realised I'd left it and my CD player I was waved back onto the plane by a very helpful Icelandic cleaner who left me to my own devices while I waltzed about the empty aircraft. This was pre 9/11 I might add.

1.There´s no synth in Ceremony.And it´s the 12" version on Substance not the 7". 2.I agree with you.The original versions are much better. 3.You are right again.
