In A Lonely Place 7" version

Now that we've discussed the various versions of Temptation & Ceremony, can someone tell me if the IALP version on the 7" is just a different mix from the 12" or a completely different recording ? It's certainly not just a fade out as the 'thunderclaps' appear in different places from the 12". I actually prefer the 7" version.

To me the 7" version sounds like a remixed edit of the long take (the biggest difference - apart from the thunderclaps, obviously - is in the way the bass is mixed).

And frankly, I prefer the short version, too.

there are 2 different 7" versions of IALP, right ? (E.A.R.S. NJ trio recording, then the re recorded green/copper sleeve version with Gillian) Do they both differ from the respective 12" versions ? The only 7" version I have is the copper one, but I must say, that is a truly fantastic sounding piece of vinyl. Those early singles really sound great on vinyl at 45 rpm, I think that would make a good a/b test to show the unbelievers the total superiority of vinyl over digital. IALP in particular has a great sounding low end, I'd wager they had that record cut multiple times before they were satisfied (it's hard to get low end like that without the needle jumping the groove unless you go to the wider spaced grooves of a 12").

That's the question, was IALP recorded twice ? My own hunch is that it wasn't and therefore there is no recording of it with Gillian playing. I think the differences between the 7" and 12" versions are remixes of the same recording.

I think bill poster is right. I used to have every version of the single and the only thing that's different are the 'effects', I believe. Unlike Ceremony, I don't think it was re-recorded.

Right. Mr Discography again. There are three versions of 'In A Lonely Place'. 'Ceremony' originally came out on seven and twelve inch, with the full length 'In A Lonely Place' (6:14) and the faded-out version on the seven inch (4:39).

When 'Ceremony' was re-recorded and re-released, 'In A Lonely Place' was said to be slightly remastered (which would explain why someone mentions the bass sounding different on the first version). This is the 6:12 version that appears on 'Substance' and 'Retro'.

It is in fact a different version, as although the music and vocals are the same, there are a few additional sound effects on there (perhaps played by newly recruited Gillian). This would also explain why someone thinks the thunderclaps fall in a different place on the seven inch (if they'd only previously heard the 'Substance' 12" version, and not the original 12"). If you still doubt it, get both twelve inch versions, and play the last 20-30 seconds: the second version ends with a loud sound effect (thunderclap?) over the top, the original doesn't.

There was only ever one seven inch version (a fade of the original 'In A Lonely Place'), as the re-recorded 'Ceremony' was only ever released on 12", unlike the original.

What I'd like to know, mind you, is what happened to Peter hook's bass playing on thelive version on disc four of 'Retro'? You don't hear him play a single note! Was he doing some synthesizer stuff on that Glastonbury version?

He was definitely trying to play the Shergold Marathon 6-string bass !

So does that mean that the original IALP 12" has never made it onto CD ? Another one for the list then !

As regards the Glastonbury versions, if I remember correctly, the bass amp was playing up and the bass kept disappearing from the sound throughout the gig.

I have the seven inch version of 'In A Lonely Place' on a 12" record, with the original pre-Gillian 'Ceremony' on the top side. It comes in a gold sleeve à la the original 7", but with the Veritas logo imposed on it.

Even more confused now ! So the 7" IALP is on the 12" ? Does there exist then, a full length version of 7" fade out track i.e. with the loud thunderclap just as the bass comes in ? That's what annoys me about the Substance version, I always expect this huge noise as the bass starts but it turns out be a bit wimpy.

I have the gold Italian pressing as well. On the back of the sleeve it says "Made in Italy by BASE RECORD Bologna"

Yes, that's on the first official 12" recording of 'Ceremony' Fac 33. Like I say, there are three versions.

Bang! If you right click and 'save as' the links below, you can hear the original twelve inch, and the seven inch versions of 'In A Lonely Place' - both unavailable on CD, even after 'Retro'. As Bill noticed (I never had), these have different "thunderclap" timings to the re-recorded version, which appeared on the second 'Ceremony' twelve inch, and is widely available on CD on 'Substance' or 'Retro'.

I know of no re-recorded seven inch version, so let these mp3 files, and the 'Retro' version be proof that there are, in fact, three different versions of this song, and not the two as is widely considered. The main points to listen for are at about 3:15, when Hooky's bass comes in (old version: re-triggered thunderclap noise - newer version: no sound FX), and about 20 seconds from the end when the drums and music fall out the mix (old version: no sound FX - newer version: extra thunderclaps).

So, definitely three versions! Mr Discography saves the day once again, due to his vast record collection!
