Should I buy NO Albums prior to Substance if I have Substance?

I already have only two NO cd's "Substance" and "Technique".

Now due to the fact that I have Substance and it is a singles compilation of NO before 1987--is there any point in getting all the previous NO albums since many versions will be shorter anyway?

Are the package of songs on the albums before substance measurable to the longer Substance versions?

What do you all think?

You must have PCL and Low Life. Many essential songs were never singles and as a result do not appear on Substance.

just get them all!! don't be silly. lots o' great stuff before '87...on albums and such.

you definitely need low life & brotherhood. & pcl actually.

depends how much you like them re movement, for some its a favourite, for others its rarely listened to.

a lot of singles were non album tracks do not forget so you would not be repeating that many.

depends what your favourite tracks are to the order you get them in mind.

buy the damn albums and be happy!

ps. you may want to buy the CD's then find the Factory Originals on vinyl to hold while you listen to the CD. The larger picture and care that went into the Fact. releases are worth the trouble and money...

Of course U must. You have only 3 songs which are in previous albums. Also, the album version of Bizarre Love Triangle is much much better; and Subculture is a fantastic song in Low Life, while in Substance really SUCKS.

Definitely....the album version of BLT is far superior, though the 12" version of TPK is better than the album version. There are many gems on the early albums. Get everything and follow the way the group developed. Movement is an aquired taste, PCL is patchy, but Low-Life and Brotherhood are both pretty consistent.

Well, I agree PCL is patchy, but it does contain their best song, after all!

power, corruption, and lies low-life brotherhood

all classics, all with great, unique songs

and get Technique too!

While Substance is a compilation album, it's really a compilation of non-album singles. The 4 albums preceding Substance only contributed a total of 3 songs to Substance and those 3 are substantially different on Substance than their album versions.

Movement - None Power, Corruption, & Lies - None Lowlife - The Perfect Kiss (edited) & Subculture (much different version) Brotherhood - Bizarre Love Triangle (original)

While I consider Substance to be my favorite album of all time, the other pre-Substance New Order CDs are a little rough in spots, with the possible exception of Lowlife. But you really should get these CDs because a) their's some stellar material in there, such as Dreams Never End, Age of Consent, Your Silent Face, Leave Me Alone, and All Day Long, and b) each album has a distinctive sound, and c) it's New Order so it should sound unlike anything else you own.

Is that enough good reasons to check out the earlier albums? And I haven't even touched on the reasons to check out Tecnique yet!

You don't have to I already have Technique:D

You have to check out the newOrder back catalogue and then the Joy Division back catalogue to see where they came from, it will blow your mind.

Congratulations on having the courage to admit your mistake!

if you don't buy these you will be missing out on 30 new order songs from the formative years when they were still developing their style and therefore more open to experimentation.
