This poll is driving at the question of riding on another's coat tails, or traveling down a paved road vs. paving one for others. Think of if NO and JD never existed. What band would it have hurted the most?

Kind of a strange poll here. I am thinking of it like what was the next musical thing that the sounds of NO (and JD) led to. It certainly wasn't grunge - that came from the 70's rock thing. I think people listening to NO, then growing it to the next level, came to the NIN sound as the next logical evolution of the NO sound. That's why I voted for NIN, I think NO paved the way for the electronic sound to get more aggressive. Still something to move to (not like Skinny Puppy per se), but adding the angst of early 70's punk with a 90's GenX mindset.

He's out the back giving Hooky a few more lessons on bass (Hooky's a slow learner). And they're both still trying to figure out how Steve Hanley does it so well. ;)

I'd say Orgy, even though I dispise them. They took one of New Order's most popular tracks, made it all angry sounding, and sold it off as one of their own to a bunch of teeny goths and metal heads. If you ask me, Orgy seems like the 90's answer to Duran Duran, only they are trying to appeal to the "rejected youth". Maybe if they spend less time sitting in front of a mirror putting on makeup and complaining about society, they wouldn't feel like such outcasts.

The Cure's got my vote...geez their biggest single of all time "just like heaven" (I think) was a complete ripoff of New Order from the base to the keyboards to the drums.

Or how 'bout the (hopefully I'm remembering this correctly) Lightning Seeds with the song "pure and simple"...the melody in the background is an actual ripoff of a New Order song

Or Frente, who wouldn't exist without the acoustic version of BLT

Also...maybe The Ocean Blue...

ok I'm done for now...

Also, give The Cure's "The Walk" a listen. Does "Blue Monday" ring a bell? Seeing how "BM" was released three months before it, all I can do is laugh at The Cure's attempt to make dance music. They should have stuck to recycling Joy Division tunes.

You're American, aren't you? Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys indeed. They might all go hand-in-hand Stateside, but they do not over here.

Has to be the Mondays. Without the Factory link and the New Order tour slots they'd never have amounted to anything. New Order basically gave 'em the breaks they needed...

My vote goes to "The circus Girls" come on now...

"PIZZA DELIVERY BOY, JUST A PIZZA DELIVERY BOY!!"

The first thing I thought on seeing the title of this thread was, "The Cure will win this by a country mile..." So where are they??!

ive often thought that the pet shop boys have mimicked the order though. ok so they were more chart orientated & more populist, but the basic sound was v reminiscent imo

stockholm monsters...another band who suported the order in 84 and 85...very good...but also very much trying to sound like them....the singer had the same haircut as barney and similar stage mannerisms

U2 BENEFITTED HUGELY FROM JOY DIVISION

Happy Mondays, even though they aren't listed. Made all their money on the back of Wilson's appalling risk management, and eventually killed off Factory.

i'm not gonna vote on this one cos i don't think NO directly influenced any non-rip-off band.

their influence was more in terms of a way of making music, the experimentation, the perfect mixture of electronic sounds with traditional instrumentation, etc. basically by breaking down the old "disco"/"non-disco" ghettos, they opened this door for everyone. ok, so a few others did similar before them, but not so well or (commercially) successfully. they basically demonstrated that it could be done.

another flawed poll. polls are good but not when the choices are ridiculous...not that these choices are ridiculous but there was a poll that had some really stupid choices...annoying as hell.

the Cure win with the Happy Mondays behind......can anyone sort me out with a copy of Squirrel Man and G-Spot? impossible to find here in Seattle.

I know they have them at Amazon for about 15.00. That's where I bought my copy.

I thought we were talking about bands that really got something from NO - Ocean Blue? I like them, but all they were was a 90's version of an 80's one hit wonder. If that's what they got from New Order, then I would return the present. Same with Lightning Seeds, I kind of liked them, but once again 90's version of an 80's one hit wonder.

This is not directed at everyone, just those whining about what this poll is not actually about.

I am not talking about bands who ripped off New Order, if you read my first post you would know that. I know it had some multisyllabic words in it, so ask your moms to help. We all know most NO fans still live at home. I specifically pointed to a musical genre that would not be what it is (or not exist completely) if NO and JD did not exist. The bands are bands, but also symbols of a sound. I didn't put the Cure in because I have always felt that their careers paralelled each other. If NO came out with a song, and then the Cure released a similar song 3 months later it is EXTREMELY unlikely that they could have heard it prior to them releasing their song. I think the bands were in a lot of the same places, experiencing the same things, and listening to same music. That is why they are similar. I don't care who disagrees, both NO and The Cure were very experimental and they both did things that other bands were not doing at the time. I am not talking about recent Cure here - I am referring to their first 6 albums (or so) - basically everything up to Disintegration. Which is also similar in NO's case - the beginning to about Brotherhood equalled new, innovative, and interesting... after that... well not much of what you would call ground breaking.

You need to be a bit more coherent then...

BTW Cabaret Voltaire said directly that the blending of "real" instruments with electronic music was New Order's hallmark and something that many bands have emulated...

Lets just take a look at your list...

  1. If you say PSB...their career also paralleled NO's for many years in the 80's!!!?? I hear absolutely no "real" bass or guitars in anything that they are doing. This band was created as a "formula" band by Tennant (at the time a music reviewer I believe) and he picked and chose from whomever was currently hot at the time. Electronic was far more influenced by the PSB's than the PSB's were influenced by NO.

  2. Moby. Technically Moby is not a "band" as you ask in your poll question...he has given so many nods to JD and NO that its obvious he has been influenced. I'll give you this one...

  3. Orgy. Oh come on!! These guys are not a band...they are pure corporate disco menace. You say..and I quote

"I am not talking about bands who ripped off New Order, if you read my first post you would know that. I know it had some multisyllabic words in it, so ask your moms to help."

Ummm I know that its cold in Michigan but has your brain gone numb. The only like that Orgy has to New Order is a RIP OFF COVER OF BLUE MONDAY.

Check your attitude and yourself before you cop an attitude...

Depeche Mode: This band was a Vince Clark creation and had nothing to do with New Order. Your comments about the Cure could easily apply here so this is also another hypocritical statement. Again no regular instruments...

Nine Inch Nails: This is the only truly legitimate one in the field. I guess if this was the only one on your poll we wouldn't have "misunderstood" the complexity of your question.

Oasis: Ummm. Nope. Maybe by a couple of degrees of separation. If you need to know what that means I can explain it to you Mr. Goof. The closest link here is that Brutal is a shameless ripoff of an Oasis sound right down to Barney trying to sing link Liam.

Make your questions better or your critiques....geeez

Hm, of the choices listed I'll go with the PSB.

I voted Nine Inch Nails as the blend of instruments with the electronic is clearly evident and a comparison can be drawn with New Order/Joy Division, plus Trent covered Dead Souls.

And catch a grip, Oasis and Orgy should never have been there!

OK, I will concede the fact that my best efforts to come up with a good selection of bands was not the best. But, I really wanted people to think of music formats that New Order helped to engineer, related by the bands that gained the most from that musical format coming about. I chose NIN myself because they (he) was the best example of what I was looking for. So, I am sorry for my attitude. Someone else, who has a better understanding of this issue, take this question and start a better poll with better choices and let this one die off. The only suggestion I have is to keep NIN in it. What I am trying to drive at it what music genres (sounds) did New Order bring about and therefore what band in that genre gained the most from it.

I think you are wrong here. PSP was not a paralell of New Order like the Cure was. PSP are pretty much straight (no pun intended) electronic dance. A format that New Order had a strong hand in creating. Therefore, PSP makes the list. They gained alot from the electronic dance sound. The Cure was doing what New Order was doing at the same time. I do not feel that NO caused something to happen that The Cure gained much from, which is why they were not on the list.

Concerned Depeche Mode, they could possibly be on the list, I might concede that one. But, PSP needs to be on the list, and The Cure should not. Maybe DM.

Concerning Moby, I would like to hear what other people think about whether he gained from NO or not.

Thank you. Though you forgot to mention that other Stateside obsession "Kon-Kan"..."Hey man, my best friends dad told me that was really New Order..." No man it really wasn't and another thing, just 'cos you "like" New Order doesn't mean you automatically have to "like" The Cure & The fucking Smiths...please. Develop some views of your own for once. The gulf between perceived & received information was never so wide.

Just out of some vague warped interest - what have the Cure ever done that could be called "original"? The have so very little in common with New Order that I had to read a couple of the posts here twice to make sure I hadn't misunderstood. All this concept crap and trilogy nonsense should have died with YES and ELP. Not to mention that whole pantomime whore vibe Smiths got going on - jesus christ on a fucking bike what age is he? Pathetic is far too generous a phrase for this appaling waste of time and space.

I'm not a Cure fan by the way on the off chance you hadn't guessed.
