I heard some of Depeche Mode the other day and I must say some of the music I heard from them is pretty darned good.

Does anyone here like DM, and if so which albums of theirs are best?

Also how do they compare with NO in terms of overall quality of music etc...

I'm a fan of DM, although I haven't listened to any of their albums in about three years now. I'm not sure which of their albums I'd recommend, since there's like a certain period where they had a certain style.

The first period was from 1981 to 1984, the pop sounding stuff:

  1. Speak and Spell
  2. A Broken Frame
  3. Construction Time Again
  4. Some Great Reward My favorite albums from here are the 2nd and 4th

Then they went kind of gloomy, but still had a pop edge to them, 1986-1990: 5. Black Celebration 6. Music for the Masses 7. Violator I'd say the 6th and 7th are the best from this batch, but the 5th is really a fan favorite.

And last they dove out of synth pop and went with a mixture of rock and electronic, and had more of an adult sound, 1993-2001 8. Songs of Faith and Devotion 9. Ultra 10. Excitor The 8th has a really weird rock sound to it, kind of something U2 would do, and the last two are very relaxing and mellow. I'd say dive into their earlier stuff before you get into these.

Try listening to The Singles 86>98 album, you'll get a good idea what DM are all about. Ultra is also a great album. The early stuff is a bit too pop orientated for my liking but their style changed in the mid 80's.

DM is my favourite band, I recommend you "Black Celebration", I think it's their better album. I like every album except the first (Speak & Spell), it's composed almost completely by D. Clarke, who then left (thanks God). If you want to start to know them, get "The singles 86-98", but I recommend you every disc except the first and the last, "Exciter" (it's very good, but not as good as the others). Listen also to "Recoil" - it's the solo project of A. Wilder.

I have the three Recoil albums, but I found them rather difficult to get into. It's kind of hard to recommend it to new DM fans because it sounds nothing like DM. However, the Martin Gore solo album is worth hunting down, it sounds alot like the mid to late 80's DM.

yes , you're right... But I had to recommend it...

My favourite single of Dep Mode is Enjoy the Silence, I havent heard all there albums so I cant pass judgement. The first time I saw Dep Mode live was in 1981 at the Lyceum in London, Vince Clarke was still in the band.

I think DM peaked with Violator in 1990. Black Celebration is my second fave, and Music for the Masses is very good too. Songs of Faith and Devotion, Violator's follower, is very good too, but the next two are rather boring imho.

Nikos, as other posters have explained Depeche Mode have changed quite markedly during their career so I suggest that you start by getting the two singles albums "81-85" and "86-98". "81-85" is a single CD but be careful because there are two versions: the original version which has a picture of the band on the front and a remastered version with two extra tracks which has a picture of an empty cinema on the front - I recommend the latter. "86-98" is a double CD but there is also a DVD of their videos for that period which you many want to get instead as some of their videos are excellent. "86-98" is the better of the two but there are enough great tracks on "81-85" to make it worth buying but depending on where you are or where you shop you may be able to get a double pack containing both singles albums which could work out cheaper than buying them separately. Their double live album "101" (which is basically a greatest hits album from the late 1980's but recorded live) is excellent.

Once you've listened to the singles albums you can then work out which eras of DM you do and don't like before deciding whether or not to buy any of their studio albums, a few of which are great but some of which are forgettable (DM have made some undoubtedly excellent singles but have never quite made an undoubtedly excellent album). Of the studio albums my favourites are "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" (DM at their loudest and most epic, especially on "Walking In My Shoes" and "Condemnation" - there was also a live version of the album but I don't know if it's still available) and "Violator" (DM's first attempt at adding guitars to their usual synths and it works well but the follow-up "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" is bigger and better). I've got the rest but I found most of them disappointing: "Black Celebration", "Music For The Masses" and "Exciter" are the best of the rest.

Depeche Mode are/were a great band but I don't know whether to refer to them in the present or past tense. The members of DM seem to get on with each other like the members of NO have got on with each other (and especially when it comes to touring and after show parties) and DM may now be in the same situation as NO were after Republic (Dave Gahan is currently working on his first solo album). However, whether or not Depeche Mode are still together they are not as good as New Order (and neither are The Cure).

DM are my favourite band too, (closely followed by the Order, though), and my personal fav. album in 1986's "Black Celebration". I strongly recommend 1990's "Violator" and 1993's "Songs of Faith and Devotion" if you want to try and get more into them.

i got into DM back in primary school, before my NO days. as for my favourite albums: black celebration, violator and some great reward. any of their compilations are good, as well (especially 101).

another DM related story: it was when i saw them at red rocks on the violator tour, right before the opening act nitzer ebb came on, that i first heard happy mondays' hallelujah (club mix), a song that changed my life. :D

When are the NOOL Old Guard going to turn up and start expressing outrage at the very thought of DM being mentioned in conjunction with NO?

I've always quite liked DM, though for me they've always remained the lightweight teeny pop outfit they were when they appeared on TOTP doing New Life. Not really in the same league as NO. Top quality pop though. I'd also rate Ultra as by far and away their best album. Guess no one else here agrees.

agreed that NO are much more sophisticated. but there is a certain amount of fan crossover, particularly amongst the 20-30 age group (here in the states when i was a kid there was a lot of crossover. i think it's the pigeonholing of anything with an electronic element.)

Ultra is indeed a class album, but lacks...something. Home, Insight, The Bottom Line are three brilliant tracks but then again the album is hampered by the whole publicity that preceeded it in 1997.

Yes, Dave is working on solo stuff, as is Martin, but Martin has said that he had a very-severe case of writer's block during the Exciter sessions and now, he claims, thanks to this cover album, he indeed has ideas to write about and wants to get back into the studio.

Wouldn't suprise me to see them back in the studio by the end of 2003.

Which are the best Depeche Mode songs for those who enjoy them?

My PERSONAL favourite is "Sun and the Rainfall" from 1982's A Broken Frame, but it's not a song that grabs your attention and makes you go OMG DEPECHE FUCKING MODE!!! It's more of a song that us elitist-DM fans worship.

Take your pick - "Enjoy the Silence", "Personal Jesus", "Walking In My Shoes".

OK, this has gone on long enough - I am undeniably into NewOrder, but let the record show that I don't like DM at all. Not even slightly. The one song of theirs I regarded as passable is a NO ripoff anyways, namely Enjoy the Silence, which even has synthetic Hooky-like sounds on it.

I incurred the wrath of many NOOLers quite a while ago with my comments about DM sounding like 'hairdresser music' to me, so maybe I'll leave it there. :ignore: Only an opinion, as always. CTB :bear:

MODE! love them, not in the same way as the order though. Personal DM faves are gonna be Black celebration, masses, and 101. The new one ( Exciter)is quite good. saw the exciter tour when it happened into Boston, Massachussetts. I must say, they sounded great. Favorite songs, Black celebration, fly on the windscreen, in your room and behind the wheel. Take a chance on them. good stuff.

Violater's a top-notch album (and the only proper studio LP of theirs in my collection), but, as I've stated before, apart from NO there's just not much electronic acts that I like. I keep meaning to get one or two more DM albums, but I just never get around to it. The Singles 81-85 is pretty decent, I pulled it out for a listen a few days back. Other than that, nought.

i'm a big dm fan. i think violator is the best studio album to start with and of course the 2 best of cds for a wider range to sample from.

pretty happy to see Dave cleaned up and looking almost like he did when dm first started. can't say i'm a fan of the recent albums though (although i love It'S No Good).

i just picked up the 86-98+ double dvd pack. fun stuff to watch though i'm pretty sure its missing a couple of videos and it doesnt have anything from Exciter :|

I am also a big DM fan (mainly 86-present). Although I do enjoy some of their earlier work (some singles and Some great reward). I have had the pleasure to see them for the first and only time during the Exciter tour when they played Toronto. They put on a very good live show. Dave Gahan knows how to get the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand.

Their two best albums have to Music For The Masses and Violator. Also "101" is a pretty good representation of how good this band was live.

i always thought Depeche Mode was kinda a joke that you shouldn't take seriously... pretentious cliches that gave electronic music a bad name, very superficial, and an insult to compare them to Joy Division and New Order.

i always associate Depeche Mode with the posers, people not really all that much into music... saying that they liked Depeche Mode was just sort of like a fashion accessory for the club crowd before the rave and house scene really kicked in... at least in the USA. i always associate DM with the so-called "fag hag" crowd, the homely girls who hung out and went out with the more extreme gay guys, and always were so proud to tell everybody how cool and edgy and arty they were cause they liked Depeche Mode. you go girl!

yeah... i'm harsh... honestly...i really don't feel much nostalgia at all for much of their stuff... i dunno... Never Let Me Down was kinda good i guess... Strangelove had a nice remix even if it was stupid song... Black Celebration was the only record that came close to sounding like a band album to me... Enjoy the Silence... bleh... my own personal jesus was nicely produced i guess...i'd just as soon hear the Safety dance and You Spin me around like a record baby again thou...

Well put!

I'd just like to add that I read somewhere that Anton Corbijn's pictures of Depeche Mode contributed much to transforming their image from pop liteweights to something "serious", about the time when thier music became "serious".

Funny, I also liked "Never let me down", it's about the only one I like, it's great!

Have to disagree with you there, Ben - DM draw this criticism because of their pretentious, Bono-like posturing live and in videos, something that NO are the antithesis of. Barn and co. don't whip crowds into a frenzy with showmanship and cliche-riddled 'lead singer' performances - they play their music and fall over occasionally. If DM were as music-focussed as NO, then the comparison would carry weight, but as it stands it's an utterly ridiculous comparison. These people you speak of saying this "throwaway 80s pop" comment about NO (not ever heard that comment myself) would do well to remove their heads from their arses. Better still, give them all 'Substance' or 'International' for Christmas. CTB :bear:

Honestly, I was about 14 when I got into DM. At the time, it was the mid 90's and everyone I knew was into Green Day or anyother wannabe punk band out there. I was barely getting into the electronic pop type music, and I saw a video on VH1 for "Personal Jesus" and thought it was great. I know that the whole "retro" 80's pop thing is beginning trendy now, in fact, take a look at all the goth and emo kids that act like they are rock snobs that adore Joy Division... but it wasn't that way in the mid 90's. Everything had to be punk, metal, or rap to be "cool". If liking pop music makes me a "poser", whatever. I was never trying to be cool back then. I just wanted to find music that I enjoyed.

Nope, Depeche Mode are shite, pure and simple. The only New Order fans I've ever encountered who rate DM are all North Americans.

It's a totally different mindset over here. The type of fans the Order attract in the UK just aint into that pretentious bollocks. I'm still totally baffled as to why our friends accross the Atlantic seem to lump them together (sometimes along with Erasure and the Pet Shop Boys which is even more fucking worrrying!!!)

I've asked why this is the case on these very pages a few months ago. Still didn't get a satisfactory answer....

yeah, if said you like New Order in the USA early-mid90s it would be assumed by many that you must LOVE Depeche Mode.

about 1983-86, if you said that you liked New Order, people assumed that you loved suicide music, maybe even were "goth". (well, maybe Gillian's makeup was)

in the USA about 1990 New Order was lumped together (and often considered an inferior imitation) with Depeche Mode, Erasure, and the Pet Shop boys by lot of people who didn't really know much about New Order except a few dancefloor singles or anything about Joy Division. and then Electronic came out and the first single and album was marketed as a Marr/Tennant collab. with also one of the guys from the english synth-pop band New Order filling out the line-up... so a lot of people thought of New Order as a second rate Pet Shop boys then. by the mid 90s New Order's indie/alternative creds were pretty low in the USA, often just dismissed as that pre-house rave jungle stuff, lumped in with Depeche Mode, as a "follower" (ugh). you can tell that the US record companies have not exactly been excited about releasing New Order related stuff since the mid90s.

Odd, I've never thought of DM in that way at all. I find it almost impossible to concieve of anyone saying they like DM in order to appear 'cool and edgy'. People wanting to appear cool and edgy generally name-drop totally obscure acts ('you won't have heard of them'), not the kind likely to appear on next week's Top of the Pops.

Its pop music for Crissakes, you know, for kids. Good pop music, IMO, but neither 'cool' nor claiming to be so. 'Pretentious' isn't a word I would have associated with them. 'Lightweight' and 'sugary' maybe, but not pretentious.

well, i didn't say they were smart, i said that they were posers... that is the absurdity of it... they had no idea what 98% of the stuff played in clubs was, they just had mostly heard of Depeche Mode.

I think DM are perceived very differently in different parts of the world. In the UK they are a synth pop band who have tried to live down their embarrassing past and are now largely irrelevant. In mainland Europe they are a very cool band who have a very loyal and fanatical following who take what the band do very seriously. In the US they are a stadium band who write and perform rock songs most of which happened to be played on synths. However, what Depeche Mode really ought to be remembered for is Martin Gore's excellent song-writing: his best songs (such as "Walking In My Shoes", "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy The Silence", "Master And Servant" and "People Are People") are on a par with those written by much more famous songwriters.

Very good points there fingers, I enjoy DM just as a singles band (don't own any of their albums). It still is kind of mind boggling that they actually had a concert in the freakin'Rose Bowl, a testament to how popular they were back then in the 80s.

People are People is one of Martin's best songs? It's a lyrical nightmare, musically, meh, it's alright, but the lyrics are horrible.

DM's best lyrics are probably on SOFAD and Ultra.

Well... I do like DM (it's my former fave band :D), NO is my fave band, but they're completely different in my opinion. Never would I compare them: not the same kind of music, not the same attitude. But I think they're both very good in their own styles.

Well, I think it's one of his best songs, primarily for its music but also for its lyrics which not only fit in with the feel of the music extremely well but express a complex idea in simple language that most people will understand. That song probably achieved more than most articles written in broadsheet newspapers, speeches given by politicians or debate programmes on TV and radio.

I like them. I'm not going to list reasons/albums/songs here because this is not a Depeche Mode forum.

I disagree with those that lump them in with New Order here in the US (a product of Warner Bros. marketing them to the same audience) but I also disagree with those that dismiss them for not being comparable to New Order.

I happen to like many bands (too numerous to mention here) that sound nothing like New Order.

In terms of good "typical" songs by DM on their early (US) releases:

  1. Speak & Spell (remastered version) New Life, I Sometime Wish I Was Dead, Just Can't Get Enough, Dreaming of Me, Shout

  2. Broken Frame Leave in Silence, See You

  3. Construction Time Again Everything Counts, Told You So

  4. Some Great Reward People are People, Master and Servant, Blasphemous Rumours

Note that some singles like "Get the Balance Right" were never released on albums (not even on the US version).

I have read that DM in general had a small fan following up until "Music For the Masses" when their sound began to draw a mainstream appeal. We are well to consider that their existence to US audiences was not heralded until "People are People" hit the radio in 1984 (1983?). This might account for some differences in perception across the atlantic.

As far as my personal tastes, I never warmed to their mid-later stuff; for every good track on Violator, Black Celebration, and MFTM, there was at least 1.5 bad. As a previous poster noted, they have never produced a consistently solid album. I personally prefer the overall feel of the earlier stuff - perhaps because it is more "techno-pop" oriented. In many ways they were the most successful European group to advance the Kraftwerk sound (after Gary Numan opened it all up). In Asia, the Yellow Magic Orchestra's contribution (and parallel invention) of techno-pop can not be underestimated. Their music bridged Kraftwerk and managed to invent 80's J-POP (all in 6 years time)! DM should be envious of both their commercial success, and their (consistent) quality catalogue.

No, if it was up there with Culture Club's "The War Song" it would have been called "The Racist Song" and have included lines like "Key there kids, racism's wrong/That's what we're telling you in this song".

Depeche Mode have always divided opinion havent they? I have two of their albums - Violator, and Songs of Faith and Devotion. Having only familiarised myself with these two, I can't think of two more different sounding records by the band! One is electronic and very minimal (and I think it's pretty good), whilst the other is their take on stadium rock - with all the trimmings if you like.

I remember this was the time when the band - especially singer Dave - started going mad with their drug phase - and I recall him being annoyed when Kurt Cobain killed himself (didn't he say something like: "I was really pissed off - cos I really wanted to be the guy who did that" - tragic figure of fun or what?...)

Haven't bothered with their albums after that, but like I said, the two I did get hold of I think are pretty good. Never seen them live though.

Violator. Music for the Masses is also tops.

i like themm a lot, but less so then in the past...New Dress is one of their best songs, Violator an excellent album

I used to like DM...but violator disappointed me...and as such, I haven't purchased anything from the band since...

as for recoil...I picked up the first disc...it was, what, interesting...sounded pretty good blaring from a car stereo...especially that one song, faith healer...

so I guess what I'm trying to say is that I no longer much care for these kids..

Originally posted by Alberto Timmy DM is my favourite band, I recommend you "Black Celebration", I think it's their better album. Wilder.

It's not D. Clarke but V. Clarke (Vince). But the singer is D. Gahan (Dave).

Al & Don, I think Sebsy said once that "Digital Republic" was not only for all things New Order but for "serious musical discussion".

So you are right, talking about DM is completely off topic, innit ;)

At best, this should be on the other forum - sorry to say that this sums up my belief that many of (not all!) the US fans have completely missed the point where the Order are concerned. The common denominator these bands have is the decade they were most prolific. Nothing more.

Watch out or I'll start a 'does anyone here like David Hasselhoff?' thread.

Vince Clark rules.
I haven't listened to any DM past the '85 years, so as far as I know, anything done with Vince Clark in the band is superior (although I really like Leave in Silence), and everything following was probably just based on the work he did, and eventually turned into what it is today.

I can taste more than feel This burning inside is so real I can almost lay my hands upon The warm glow that lingers on

Moved, lifted higher Moved, my soul's on fire Moved, by a higher love

I surrender all control To the desire that consumes me whole

Leads me by the hand to infinity Lies in wait at the heart of me

Moved, lifted higher Moved, my soul's on fire Moved, by a higher love

Heaven bound on the wings of love There's so much that you can rise above

Moved, lifted higher Moved, moved, by a higher love By a higher love

I surrender heart and soul Sacrificed to a higher goal

Moved, moved by a higher love By a higher love

New Order can only DREAM writing such magnificant lyrics!

They were definitely a huge impact on what I've loved and still love musically. The thing I can't take are the ballads, though. They always made me cringe, and still do. However they have made some of the best music I have heard over the course of the years.

I like DM! I think I've seen more DM shows than NO, but it doesn't mean I like DM more or less than NO. I wasn't able to go to concerts until 1993! :( Also, there weren't any NO/JD fans I knew at the time. I've definitely listened to NO much longer than I have to DM. To me, bands like NO and DM were instrumental in introducing synthesizers to popular---and not-so-popular---music.

Though Depeche have produced some passable pop songs over the years - Enjoy The Silence - I Feel You - Never Let Me Down Again - the suggestion that their lyrics are superior to any bands let alone New Orders is a joke...very bad rhymes and far too much sex & religion...usually in the same sentence. GIve them their due though - Lysette Anthony was RIDE OF THE FUCKING CENTURY in that video! see; http://users.stargate.net/~bambam/la-ify03.jpg

TOTALLY gratuitous! Who cares for that colombian bimbo?

Now, J-LO, that's hot!

Jennifer Lopez is hot, but she's just so overrated in the States now (I really abhor the fact that she would rather be called "J-Lo". Especially since she has written maybe 1% of the music/material that she has released as an artist!).

Benny! Thanks for those Lysette photos, mate! :)

You guys who slag off DM remind me of NME journalists who seem to believe everyone has to have this indie-cred thing going otherwise your uncool and obviously have no talent.

Anyway as you can see from my pic(Alan Wilder, the man)

I mean heaven forbid anyone to have any ambition to do large shows and worry about image.

New Order are great at what they do, it happens to be very different to how Depeche Mode go about doing things. Both are great, both are 2 of my fave groups. And this doesn't mean I don't 'get it' or whatever the hell that means. New Order are a band in the traditional sense, whereas Depeche Mode are more methodical in their approach. End of the day both work in vastly different ways.

Try going to the Depeche Mode forum, where you will see silly ignorant views of New Order(ie. barney cant sing, not polished enough). See its cos they are very different that fans of both bands dont get the other.

cheers ALEX

Wow, I never thought that DM fans and NO fans were butting heads per se. I guess it's possible. If you look at those bands from a musical standpoint, however, you can see how equally important they are/were to British music. What I find even more interesting is that you don't find very many American bands that come close to the caliber and success of both NO and DM. Frankly, there aren't a lot of American bands out there lately that have inspired me with their music the same way that Depeche Mode or New Order have.

Everyone's got their own sense of taste, so I say let bygones be bygones...You say tomaTOE, I say tomaTO - it's still the same focking vegetable. :p

But DM have never been as successful over here as they are in other countries - they sold their soul to Uncle Sam at a very early age, and while they may be treated as deities by certain people away from Britain, they are no more than just another band in the UK.

Hmmm...well again, as I don't live in the UK, I'm not seeing the same stuff as you...but I would believe it. :)

And their fanbase is pretty big in the States...and now Dave Gahan and Martin Gore live in the US as well...

Their music is still considered pretty original in comparison to other electronic bands...and I hate to say it, they've probably had more airplay on the radiowaves than our beloved New Order... :(

Sure, in the US they're bound to have more airplay. They very successfully conquered the US market, and fair play to them, they're good at what they do. You'll go a month without hearing any of their stuff in the UK though.
