Big ends, small dicks

Someone raised this question in the 'Twisted Tenderness best song' thread. Do not simply pick the song you prefer, but select the one which does the best job as an album ending.

Decades. Leaves you in no doubt what that bit of washing line is doing.

Seeing as my copy of PCL ends with "The Beach" instead of Leave Me Alone, I had to go with Face-up. I'm just a sucker for that song....

Well, yes, Face-up is very good, but how can you pass up the chance to vote for LMA in any category where it's eligible?

Decades. A fantastic finale to one of the greatest long players ever.

LMA should win this easily. The real best end song is the end of side A on Low Life. It technically does not count. But, when you have the tape and Sunrise finishes with the bell chime you realize that you have just witnessed perfection...

LMA itself ends beautifully, melodically; and I think that's what makes it a good album closer. Doesn't it make you think "I've just listened to a great album"? That last chord gives a warm glow every time. In today's terms a "chill-out" after a euphoric experience.

But it is a toss up between Dream Attack and Decades...definately!!!

LMA and Dream Attack would both go very close if it were just a New Order poll, but as JD have been included, it has to be Decades, as the ultimate closer.

Man, this was tough...but I went with Dream Attack. However, Face-up is a brilliant song, and Leave Me Alone (though not the last song on my version of PCL) is a great song, too.

The pitty with international releases is that they often include bonus tracks which do not really fit in the album. An album is not only the random juxtaposition of 8 or 10 songs. It has got a spirit of its own and, specially with New Order, it leaves a long lasting aftertaste which is completely spoiled by the extra tracks. I hate having SOTN on Brotherhood, and I would hate to have Blue Monday or The Beach on PCL, TPK full length at the end of Low-life, Don't Do It or Best & Marsh at the end of Technique...

True enough! Unfortunately, we don't get much choice as far as releases go in the US. :(

And still no one knows the record that was scratched at the end of 'every little counts' :\ohwell:

Good question...hard to say! I remember a snippet from "Pleasures & Wayward Distractions" about a comparison between ELC and Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side", though they never did mention where that scratched record was sampled from...

One of the US 87 gigs - Pittsburgh - they start playing "Walk on the Wild Side" in the middle of "Every Little Counts", with Barney actually knowing the lyrics !

Denial does the best job of wrapping up an LP for me. Opinion of whether or not one likes the song or the LP it closes does not matter here, it's the sheer agression in the song after what's just gone before in the previous 7 tracks that really clinches it.

I would have voted Decades but I always have viewed it as going hand in hand with The Eternal - the 2 songs are inseperable as far as I'm concerned.

My vote went to Dream Attack - as good as many of the alternatives are, this is one of my all time faves.

An honourable mention must go to Avalanche though. After the troubled birth of Republic & the post Reading split, to keep hearing them ending by singing 'Faith' always kinda gave me hope that all was not lost. Roll forward 5 years to Apollo98 & the faith was amply rewarded. :) :) :) :) :)

Myself, I'm a big fan of Denial, and think this is a very underrated song. But there's little that doesn't pale in comparison with Decades. Anywhere. From anyone.

Wow!!! I seriously thought that "decades" would run away with it. Decades is the one for sure. One of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever commited to vinyl. As the closing track to the album, it's stunning. Ian curtis sounds like a ghost.

We need more votes to decide between Throw Me A Bone ((c) Hunstman) and Dream Attack...

i adore every little counts. it's silly, but self-consciously so (as demonstrated by barney's laughing through half the song) and a great last song.

Decades. It's wonderful how you can just catch the full ending of the take in the fade out.

And I hate "Every Little Counts" (nothing personal). Sounds like mid-80s OMD to me.

I'm going with "Every Little Counts" although this was one difficult - lots of good choices there. I'd hate to do a run-off on this one! I like how comical this song is on an otherwise somewhat serious album, and the very, very end of the song (that sounds like someone changed the radio station) puts the exclamation mark on it! :D

I'd have to vote this for the same reasons as said poster

i have chosen "decades" because it is such a beautiful, sad song, it lingers in my heart since i first heard it 18 years ago.
