I'm knocking up a compilation tape of song live debuts (that will be available once completed to anyone who wants a copy). Obviously the early songs will be more difficult to do, as there are fewer of the early recordings available, but I should think half of Movement, all of PCL (bar the obvious Ecstacy), and the Low-Life, Brotherhood etc stuff can be included. Any thoughts ?

either Water Rat or the Gigography has a pretty complete list of live debut's...i would check those sites....

We have the same just here.

Check the page I put the link the last time, it will give you the first time a song was played..

Except.. there might be errors, but our list was built out of 3 sources.. so we hope it's good ;)

What was it again?

Cheers - I already have the debut details (and not all of the Water-Rat ones etc are correct - I have sent him an amendment but he hasn't changed it yet). Would people be interested in this compilation though ? Most of the songs changed rather a lot from the original live performance, particularly the PCL and Low Life stuff.....

Sounds like an excellent idea.

When, by the way, was Temptation's debut? I really like the Taras Shevchenko version..

We don't have a copy of Temptation's debut, which was actually in Finland in early Sept 81 (the Helsinki 6 Sept 81 gig listed here was actually the second performance, but the first live tape).

Excellent idea this as i am just listening to your TATTON COMMUNITY CENTRE CHORLEY one and what it lacks in SOUND quality is more than made up by the EARLY actually playing with all their flaws.I have not heard most of the EARLY stuff.Sounds a WINNER to me.And once again thanks for this and let me repay you by sending a ROCKET MICK REMIX or CD-R that i have done for other NOOL'S.If you send me your addy i PROMISE not to come round! :D:D:D:D Rocket Mick

If you see errors in ours, email me! nleblanc@neworderonline.com to mail me directly.

Water Rat is technically no longer updating his site, though he added the Summer Tour I think..

Looking through the list of songs Nicos, I'm sure I've read in "An Ideal For Living" that Something Must Break HAS been played:nod: I'll check it out later:thumb:

Leave Me Alone debut - Bristol 26/2/82 - a bit more drawn out with a long intro, refreshingly different and with different lyrics. It will be included on the tape.

Something Must Break was played at one gig in late 78 - not available on tape though sadly.

The best thing about this debuts tape will be the number of tracks that changed drastically from first live outing to recorded version, particularly the PCL and some of Low Life songs.

I have to disagree here. According to Stephen Morris in Mark Johnson's book, the only time time they played "Something Must Break" was at The Odeon in Canterbury, 16 June 1979. Interestingly enough, Joy Division played support for The Cure.

You're right about the recording, no tape is available, unless maybe you're Peter Hook.

I've read that as well - put it down to another Johnson cock-up (of which there are literally hundreds in that book !). That gig was late 78 not June 79.

I'm not questioning your authority, but how can you be so sure about the date when there's no tape of the gig in circulation?

It's hardly a conclusive argument, but the June '79 date makes sense in that they may have been practising the song in preparation for the studio sessions booked for July (the only time the track was put down on tape - as far as we know).

Mark Johnson's book actually says (on page 32) The Odeon, Canterbury (1979?) According to Steve Morris, this concert supporting The Cure featured Joy Division's only public performance of "Something Must Break".

No date is given. The only known Canterbury date was 14/11/78 supporting The Rezillos. Incidentally, The Cure played Canterbury University (NOT The Odeon) in October 78 and twice in 79 (17 March and 16 June).

We'll probably never know ;)
