Well, I resisted it this far...

But, as a fellow Belgian mentioned my past in the "Get Ready - Top Half and Bottom Half" topic...

Well, I've been a music and cinema journalist.

And I've met Hooky, promoting Monaco, and Barney (with J. Marr) for "Twisted Tenderness"...

3 very nice guys, in fact...

... come on Geoff, expand the details.

I actually kicked Hooky once! I was sitting on the floor at the T&C, Hooky was stood before me and I couldn't believe it was him cos he looked so short. So I kicked him in the back of the leg to make him turn round, just to check. It was him. He's tiny.

Have met both Hooky and Barney on more than one occasion since - both lovely blokes, Barney a touch more reserved.

Well, for Monaco, Pottsy was there too. It was on a very sunny day in Brussels. Having a drink on a terrace, Hooky doing the interviews "topless" and his hair dyed blond...

A very good interview...

The real shock was with Barney, though. I arrived at the Brussels hotel where the interviews were taking place. He was doing another interview in the bar. And he was so much looking like I though ghe would.

That may sound stupid but, most of the times, when you meet famous people, they don't look much like the photographs and videos...

I sent the interviews to Seb and Nic but they are in French...

Jarvo is Hooky like really small? - in the same way that Kylie Minogue is about the size of a wasp? - I always got the impression he was a great man with hefty legs? - what a shitter.

Geoff how long did you spend with the boys?

Hooky is short but not that short.

I mean, it's surprising because you would think he's huge.

45 minutes with the Hooky, 25 minutes with Bernard and Johnny...

Did you ask Jonny if he was ever in touch with Morrissey?

Did Peter Hook ever admit that New Order WAS his life, and without it he was like a foot without a shoe.

Johnny didn't really talked about Morrissey, if I remember well.

The interview with Pete was incredibly moving. He was very sad he couldn't play neither NO songs, nor JD songs. He thought it was sucha waste.

He said it was like a family. Someday, you come home, a little apprehensive, and then you realize it wasn't that difficult.

Quite historical, those words, since that's what happened.

I recall seeing Hooky at Reading river-mead centre the night before the NO concert.I think Dave Clarke was on the decks at the time,I was like Natalie Imbruglia(torn)between not wanting to invade his privacy, not wanting to say something gushing and not having the bottle to say anything. Solution if it happens again I'll remember the customary greeting is to kick him.

He's not KylieMinogue short, but he's still dead short. I'd reckon about 5'6/5'7 for both Hooky and Barney? My Mrs is 5'7 and she Towered over Barney when we met him in America in the summer. Think she had heels on but that doesn't put her any more than 5'10. Steve's about 5'10, mind, and Gillian's about 5'3. Phil C's another short-arse too.

Once told Hooky I had a New Order tattoo when I ran into him in the SW1 club in about 91. A lie, but I didn't know what else to say. Couldn't shake him off after that. He was well E'd off hit nuts. Er, as was I, I think?

So Gillian is tiny? - was Hooky receptive to having a bit of banter? - did he appear genuinely interested in you knowing you were a 'proper' fan? - didn't you think to yourself, here is my opportunity, how can I convey 20 years of Order to the man himself?

Come on, more, more, more.

Buster are you saying that you have your interview with the lads on video?

Nope, it's on a silly little tape from a dictaphone...

Last time I approached Hooky was in the departure lounge of San Francisco on the way to the Vancouver gig. Presented him a set-list nabbed from the stage, asking him to sign it, he called me a 'Cheeky Bastard!' then proceeded to write 'Peter Hook says Fuck Off' across it. Apparently he was still feeling ill after their Japanese trip. However, he'd lightened up considerably by the time we ran into him again in LA on the way home. Nice bloke. Short, but nice. You should see his minder, Sarge. Looks like Hooky's 'harder' brother. Similar looking but broader and with more tattoos. Wears those silly Plus-Four jeans too. Can't see the attraction in those. Although they do help show off Hooky's/Sarge's leg tattoos.

I spoke to Roy Keane once on the phone. He was a really nice bloke suprisingly. And thats as good as it gets for me I'm afraid

You have to admit, doing interviews shirtless is very in character for our Hooky...

I bumped into Terry Jones (he of Monty Python fame) quite literally going into a toilet in London. He was coming out pulling his flies up, as he didn't look up when he was coming out of the bog he bumped into me. I thought, fucking hell, its Terry Jones - and he's just hit me because he was putting his cock in his pants. I looked at him, which wasn't hard to do as his face was on the end of my nose, and he could tell straight away that I was going to say some stupid Monty Python reference or saying. I was caught by surprise otherwise I would have said are you one of the kni-g-uts that say 'Ni'... needless to say he ran off before I could.

Other than that I went to see Married With Children being filmed in Hollywood, and me and my mates continually shouted out 'Nice One' as loud as we could so that when we saw it on tele we would know it was us. Never saw the episode though, perhaps they phased us out.

Buster, do you think Hooky would entertain removing his shirt for any interviews nowadays after his recent weight gain? On a similar note our Barney isn't quite the slip-of-a-lad he once was in the eighties.

That's a good question, Hunsty. But at the time of the interview, he had already gained a little weight. Not much though.

Talking about Barney, looking back at 85's videos like PFD, it's true he was really really really slim...

Probably had something to do with all those appetite suppressants he used to take ;)

I confess I've only met one of the band members. Having made a two way conversation with Peter Hook in the evening, 26 oct, 91 after a Revenge gig.

And now have I doubts yet again :-) What do we choose: A good performance or a good conversation? (For me N.O. 82, Revenge 91 + a conversation afterwards.)

When i was at school we were asked to do a study on pop music, which i did on JD / NO, ny english teacher was well into them as well so we tried to get an interview with them or with Tony Wilson, as you can imagine it didnt happen but someone at Factory told me to send some questions in and they would pass em on. I think i'd already finished the study, but i got a reply from Hooky saying sorry for the delay and he answered the questions (which if i read now are fucking embarrasing - but i was only 15 at the time), complete with coffee stained paper. Didnt even get a free poster - tight bastards.

i met morrissey once. i was sort of being a dick and asked him a bunch of goofy true and false questions like is it true that you hate bernard sumner? is it true that you hate new order? questions like that. he was a sport and knew that i was a goof ball and answered all my questions. i even had him talk to a friend on the phone for a few minutes answering smiths questions. even if you don't like his solo stuff, he's a good guy.

The P.H. meeting:

It was a very very short one: The conversation went on right after the concert at 23.45 that evening of 26 oct.91. There was a lot contact during the set, though, as he noticed a sweaty bastard who were dancing his mind off. - same wavelength there, I laughed of exhaustion and he smiled back, good feelings that only music can create. Anyway, after 45 minutes at the end of the show, I stood by the stage, P.H. had gone backstage, so I shouted at one of the band members if I could talk to Peter Hook, and a later he showed up. The conversation went on like this:

  • Could hardly breathe, but somehow the words came out: I stuttered - "Do you know where I can order your latest single? P.H "- Do you have a pen and paper?" "No!" So, he went to collect a paper and pen and there he stood by the stage writing down the address to Factory records in Didsbury Rd. We shook hands and I thanked him for a fantastic concert His last word were: Delighted! while he stood by the entrance door showing a v-sign.

In some ways, this was a better consert for me than the one N.O. had in Norway, cos back then everyone took everything so seriously. - O.k. the music was better, but no-one even dared to clap their hands back then in 82, we, 90 % students were gasping of awe.

Apologize if my English has been incorrectly written and a bit childisly, but sometimes music often arouse a bit of entusiasm.

O.K. - I admit that the last paragraph is not true. New Order 25th of May 82 is still the best concert I've been to. The last paragraph was nothing other than trying to write in a way so that it should be acceptable for the majority of the viewers. To avoid that someone should feel or take it as an insult. Thanks.! and maybe I should promise I'll never try to take after or ape the idle chit-chatters to be accepted. The last I did so, I understood it was pretty insulting, back in the spring of 01. And pretty pointless it was to. To argue so much about one little mistake. :-(

I had brief words with Shaun and some of the other Mondays once after a gig they did in Nottingham in about 1988. They asked us where we'd come from, which was only about 50 miles away, and then proceded to tell us they wouldn't drive all that way to see a pile of shit! It was a nice gig though...
