Well, Buddy Holly did die right after he got started. If he and Richie Valens didn't die before their prime, they would have been HUGE - especially Holly.

Kilie higher than U2? Ultravox isn't even on the list. Do you know how many big hits Ultravox had during the eighties? Is this poll based on popularity is US, Europe, or world? If it is US, that would explain NO being way down at 98, but it wouldn't explain OMD being that much higher than them.

yeah but with the now annual greatest hits compilations London are spewing out, surely the Order will be rocketing up the list?

It's based on the total number of weeks spent on the UK singles chart - that's why bands with lots of no1's but no durability are absent and bands with few big hits but have been around a while are towards the top.

Thanks for that explanation.I can see how NO got in there now as I was surprised to see them in there at all! Having done the rounds of the family parties this xmas I am also surprised at how many of my nephews rate NO. One said that Substance was his most treasured possession.

This is the worst list of top bands I have ever seen. If Ultravox (who had lots of hits in the UK) - I think at one time they had 6 top tens in one year. Great band, great material, often missed... so sad.

Correct, but Ultravox only featured in the UK charts consistently between 1980 and 1984. UB40 had hits from 1980 well into the 90's - like I said it's not about a few big hitting songs, it's about having lots of them over time. New Order used to be just outside of this list, but because of HTS, that'll have run up a few more chart weeks, hence edged them on the list.

Even so, this list still has little bearing on actual musical merits, only on mainstream success

mr stevens was the most succesfull chart artist of some year or other in the 80's, ust as adam & the ants were the most succesful in '81

Sadly enough, they still get alot of airplay on pop stations here in the US. What bugs me the most is that their most popular singles were just covers of other songs.

At least The Cure's not on there, eh? :p
