Having watched a bit of the New Order Finsbury Park concert I could not help laughing at the antics of Barney and Hooky - Barney for his dancing and whistling (what's that all about? Did he see his dog in the audience or something like that?) and Hooky for being generally totally mad (the bit where he feels Phil Cunningham in the bollocks before True Faith had me in stitches). As good as this footage is, it still doesn't beat there 1989 performance on Channel 4's Big World Cafe where they performed Vanishing Point, Round and Round and Run. Has anyone else seen video footage that they consider to be high class?

Belive me mate that is only 'The tip of the Iceberg' they have toned their set and their behavoir down, things could get pretty hairy sometimes. As for the best footage, personally i'd go for 'The Whistle Test' (1985) at The Hac' and the versions of 'AIWWIW' & 'Sunrise' fuckin awesome.

Agreed, Whistle Test - quality. What a gig should look like.

My absolute fave has to be Brixton 87 though - not too many shots of the audience at this one, but it was pure bedlam from start to finish (no slow songs - knackering!!). And, boy, what a set-list!

i was at both the hacienda gigs...yes they were awesome...

never made the brixton gig...but yes it looked and sounded good....it cant have been more tiring than t&cc can it jarvo ????

I really enjoyed the live performance in 1984 on BBC2's Rock Around The Clock which was simultaneously broadcast on Radio 1. Songs performed - Sooner Than You Think, Age Of Consent, Blue Monday, In A Lonely Place & Temptation. Lot's of tension in the air, Barney snapping at Steve on IALP, having a go at the sound crew & throwing his headphones to the ground during Temptation. Hooky's amps were infamously daubed with the slogan "gay sperm". The songs weren't bad either.

BTW Henry NO also played Dream Attack on Big World Cafe which was broadcast the following midweek.

Did they play Dream Academy in the repeat???! I thought that was an exact repeat of the Sunday show! What a bummer! I taped them from the Sunday show and to me it is New Order at their peak - they had just recorded their best ever set of songs in Technique and basically they had the world as their oyster. Inspirational

The Brixton gig ie 'Acadamy' is OK, but to me it lacks the edge and suspense that only a 'Real Time Live Broadcast' show can give.

Rock Around the Clock is also quite memorable, I think it is the earliest I have heard the 'fuck' word mentioned on terrestrial TV as Barney used it in Blue Monday - somethings never change!

I don't think I've seen the Hac shows - God knows how I missed them.

I have vague memories of the Big World Cafe show. Really wish I'd taped it, but I wasn't quite as big a fan yet at that time. My favourite would probably be 'Fine Time' on Top of the Pops - Barney's trance dance and gurning, Hooky stood stock still and expressionless at the beginning, Steve bashing away on his drumpads and Gillian concentrating hard on playing about three notes.

I also liked Blue Monday on TOTP, when Barney is trying to supress a smirk at the cheesy disco Syndrum sounds they end the song with.

Ten times worse than T&C. Was the T&C really that bad? Confess, I don't remember it like that. Just remember Ceremony being a bit of a stormer, then it went down hill a bit with BLT and SS. Sunrise kicked it off again, but it went a bit limp after that, didn't it? My best memory of the T&C was some lad in glasses wandering up to the speaker to Gillian's right as the gig ended and asking everyone if we'd seen any records he'd left there. He then started to lose the plot and offer out half the T&C. Funny as fcuk. Mug. One strong gust of wind and you could've knocked him over. Actually, come to think of it, do remember a lot of peroxide birds with Barney razorcuts trying to throw their weight around too screaming for an encore. Halcyon days! (er, daze?)
