For the sake of this thread and for my love of their music, I will say yes...they were one of the first bands to really grab my attention. How can you not like New Order?!?!?

But that does not totally answer the question. Is New Order the greatest band? That is something completely different

The only answer is that there is no such thing as the bestest ever band in the world etc.

All we can do is express our personal favourites, be they NO or otherwise. It's all subjective, which is what makes it such good fun ;)

My answer is no.. they might be MY favorite band, but they are not the best of all time.

But I must say that I think that if Ian was still around, Joy Division might have that title... because you add another creator in all the material that New Order did, and it might have turned quite more amazing.

It's pure speculations and we'll never know of course, but sometimes I think it could have turned differently.

Of course, the "indie" didn't turn them into a commercial success, and the punk attitude says that they don't care about commercial success anyways, so it's probably the best way to be creative.

I'm quite sure the lyrics would have been better with Ian though ;)

Hmmmmmm...they may just be. But for some weird reason (I think it's my medication...:P ) I am leaning towards Alvin & The Chipmunks at the moment...

It never ceases to amaze me just how LITERALLY people can take a simple question!

Is New Order the Best Band ever?

Well, yes ... in MY opinion (and surely this poll was garnering personal opinions, no?)

But I'm sure if I did a straw poll of my office between New Order and, say, ABBA, then the latter would walk it, hands down. So, presumably, I should've voted NO, by imagining what my office would've thought. Or the general public?

Heaven's above!

Well said that man.

Now, it would be churlish of me to draw attention to any geographical trends here, wouldn't it? ;)

Yeah, ok, I got your point

But even if it's one of my favorite bands, I don't it's the best band in the world.. so my vote won't change ;)

But it's the kind of poll everybody would vote yes of course..

A great band would play more songs live and deliver more albums to us :D They are close, but not in that matter hehe.

Alright, I would have to agree with you on that, Spotnick...but I still leave my answer to the question as "yes". :)

Hmm, so it appears New Order have been scientifically determined to be the best band ever. I think we have a representative, randomly selected sample here, no?

Never been better said. NO is a great band, a favorite. But, they are not the greatest band ever. I do agree that JD could have become the greatest band ever had Ian stayed with us. But (there are always buts) I suspect the band would not have continued with him because of his epilepsy. He was a great force behind JD, but severely limited by his sickness, which was intensified by band demands. Now, if Ian did not have epilepsy, and he didn't die... JD would have been the most powerful force from the 70's to reckon with, hands down. People love to talk about how JD would have proceeded if Ian did not die. Reality tells me, he would have either left or asked to leave the band because he really could not play live in a reliable manor. Sad, but probably true.

You shouldn't ask this question. It's the same as asking you're mate if he is your best friend. After the answer things will never be the same. NO is a great friend, a true friend, unfortunately not my best, so I have to go with 'no'......
